אכן משנים את פורמט הבחינה של toefl
מחודש ספטמבר 2005
בפורמט החדש לא יהיה חלק הדקדוק ויהו חלקים של הבנת הנקרא,הבנת הנשמע,הבעה בע"פ וחיבורים בצורה משולבת (לא כל חלק בנפרד אלא בצורה משולבת)
למשל תהיה הרצאה קולית במחשב ויהיה גם טקסט נוסף באותו נושא שהנבחן יצטרך לענות על שאלות בע"פ ובכתב.
אני מציעה למי שיכול להיבחן בפורמט הישן בגלל שאין עדיין שום חומר תרגול לפורמט החדש
חשוב לציין כי בקורסי הGMAT שלנו אנחנו מקיפים גם את כל נושאי הTOEFL וגם נותנים למי שצריך את חומרי התרגול של הTOEFL
מומלץ למי שלקח את קורס הGMAT להיבחן קודם כל בGMAT ורק אחר-כך בTOEFL

שלום,
השבוע הלכתי לבדוק את כוחי ב-GMAT ע"י בחינה לדוגמה בחברת Princeton Review. בסיום הבחינה יצאתי עם רגשות מעורבים:
קיבלתי 50 בכמותי ו-28 במילולי מה שמסתכם בציון זעום של 630.
עיקר הבעיות שלי באנגלית היו בחלק של השלמת משפטים ובעובדה שנגמר לי הזמן לפני שסיימתי לקרוא את כל השאלות בחלק של הבנת הנקרא.
הייתי שמח לדעת מה הדרך היעילה לעבוד על הבעיות שלי במבחן המילולי עוד בטרם הקורס (אני מתכנן להבחן עד ינואר-פברואר 2006), האם קריאת ספרים באנגלית במשך חצי שנה תוכל להביא לשינוי משמעותי?

הציון 28 בחלק המילולי זה ציון בכלל לא רע כדי להתחיל לעבוד על שיפורו.
כדי להשתפר בSentence Correcteion אין מה לעשות חוץ מללמוד מאות חוקים וטכניקות. החדשות הטובות הן שקיימים חוקים כאלה ושליטה בהם משפרת את הציון באופן משמעותי.
לאחרונה יצא לאור הספר שלי GMAT Sentence Correction שמתמקד בחוקים אלה. גם בחלק המילולי של הקורס שלי אני מקדישה את רוב הזמן לSentence Correction
חשוב לציין שהחלק של הSentence Correction הוא החלק הקשה ביותר במבחן לרוב התלמידים אבל דווקא החלק הזה הוא החלק שבקורסים שלי משתפרים הכי הרבה.
בקשר לחלק של הקרייה יש לי שיטה שאני מלמדת אותה בקורס והיא עוזרת להתמודד עם חוסר אוצר מילים ולחץ של זמן.
לשיפור אוצר מילים אני ממליצה לקרוא טקסטים מדעיים למשל של Sientific American online:

אוניברסיטאות בחו"ל דורשות את כל המבחן ולא מספיק ציון טוב בכמותי.
לכל בי"ס יש דרישות קבלה משלו אבל המובילות דורשות ציון GMAT בסביבות ה 700
כמעט בלי אפשרי להגיע לציון גבוה ללא הכנה ובמיוחד בחלק המילולי
המבחן נבנה במיחוד לדוברי אנגלית וגם רמת דיבור גבוהה באנגלית לא מספיקה כדי להוציא ציון גבוה.
לגבי מבחן ה-TOEFL זהו מבחן שדורשים מכל מי שרוצה ללמוד בארה"ב בכל תחום שהוא.קורס GMAT שלנו מספיק כדי להוציא ציון טוב גם ב-TOEFL

החלק של החיבור של ה-GMAT הוא החלק הפשוט יחסית בכל החלק המילולי של הבחינה.בקורס ההכנה ל-GMAT מלמדים כתיבת חיבורים ונותנים תבניות לכתיבה ודוגמאות.לא מדובר בקורס נפרד אלא,בחלק מהקורס המילולי.

למרות שהאוניברסיטאות מקבולות ומתייחסות לכל ציוני ה-GMAT, בפועל אני לא נתקלתי במקרים כאשר תלמיד שהצליח לשפר את הציון אך לא התקבל לאוניבקסטה בגלל הציון הקודם. היו לי תלמידים ששיפרו את הציון הקודם ב-100 ואפילו 200 נקודות והתקבלו לבתי ספר Wharton ,IMD, Columbia.להפך במקרה שציון הGMAT לא מספיק גבוה האוניברסיטה מדי פעם מבקשת לשפר אותו.

בהמשך לשאלתי הקודמת, מה קורה אם הציון שלי במבחן השני נמוך יותר מהמבחן הראשון ? האם האוניברסיטאות יכלו לפי הציון הראשון הגבוה או השני הנמוך ? כמו-כן, אם אני עושה את המבחן פעם נוספת, האם אני יכול לדלג על החלק של החיבורים, ולהסתפק בציון שלי מהחיבורים מהמבחן הראשון.

הי,
קשה לענות על שאלתך בלי לדעת פרטים. אם ציון המבחן הראשון גבוה וציון המבחן השני רק קצת יותר נמוך, זה לא אמור להשפיע בצורה משמעותית. אם ציון המבחן השני הרבה יותר נמוך מציון המבחן השני, למשל 680 במבחן הראשון ו620 במבחן השני, בהחלט כדאי להתכונן טוב ולקחת את המבחן שוב. בוודאי גם חשוב לדעת לאיזה בית ספר אתה רוצה להתקבל.
מומלץ לעשות מבחן נוסף עם החיבורים כדי להוכיח שאתה מסוגל לקבל ציון גבוה במבחן מלא.

Hi Irene,
I' started learning seriously for the GMAT just recently. In order to see where I stand, I took KAPLAN's diagnostic GMAT on which I scored 650 (Q: 45, V: 35). This grade really worries me since my targeted schools require a much higher score, and since I'm scheduled to take the test in a month from now . So, I would really appriciate if you could tell me whether KAPLAN'S diagnostic test is a good predictor of my peromance on the real GMAT (I hope not).
Also, one technicality about the GMAT – I'm supposed to take the test at 08:00 – 12:00 pm. I'm not sure about the meaning of this time frame – does it mean that I can begin the test anytime between 08:00 and 12:00?

Hello!
No, the Kaplan tests do not represent the real score, especially on the verbal part. No one really knows how to score the tests except ETS. But the fact that you did badly on the test, no matter how exact the score is, is certainly an indication that you have to improve.
The tests formally start at 8:00 and 12:00, but usually there are many people who take only the math part at 8:00, so usually, if you registered for 12:00, but want to start earlier, there are a few free places at around 10:00 and they allow to those who have already arrived to start earlier.

Hi!
I think the most realistic score you can get from the old ETS paper tests, you can look for disclosed editions at ebay.com or amazon.com . You can also do the powerprep diagnostic test, but the total score will be approximately 40-50 points higher than your real score.

The book is organized by topics, even though there are also mixed practicing pages. The book contains 450 pages, including more than 200 Sentence Correction practice questions.

Hi Irene,
Before I ask my question, I would like to point out that I have your book and it's really a great one.
Now for the question – I have a problem with the following SC:
In some countries, people pay today three times more than ten years ago for the same apartment, due to an increasing demand for housing.
(A) more than
(B) as much as they have
(C) more than they have
(D) more as they did
(E) more than they did
On one hand, (E) is wrong because after the multiple number three times, the equality form, as___as, not the comparative form, must be used.
On the other hand, (B) is wrong because the auxiliary verb have cannot be used in a clause that includes time indication (ten years ago).
Would appreciate if you could help me resolve the above discrepancy

I am afraid there is no any correct answer here. I think I met this question before in some of the ETS disclosed editions, and the correct answer they were giving ("three times more}) was quite dubious. Unfortunately, such kinds of mistakes sometimes occur even on the real test, both in the verbal and in the quantitative parts.
In normal case, the correct answer would be "three times as much as they did".

Hi Eliko,
I cannot tell you for sure whether one week will be enough for you since I haven't taught you and don't really know what your level is and what your problems are.
There is no any TOEFL book which is good for all the parts. If you encounter problems with the structure, I recommend Cliff's for the grammar overview (especially the old editions) and ETS Test Preparation Kit for practicing. For the reading comprehension part, I would recommend you The Princeton Review book.

Hi Eliko,
The essay score from 0 to 6 is included in the writing/structure score and is about one half of the score. You cannot translate the score from 0 to 6 directly into the writing/structure score, since it's done through the percentile rank, which changes according to the results of the people who have taken the TOEFL. 4 means approximately 50% 4,5 means about 70 %, 6 menas 98-100%. So if your range is 223-280 and you get 6 on your essay, your final score will be around 280, if you get 4 on your essay it'll be around 251.

Hi!
Before starting answering your question I'd like to give you a piece of advice: never answer a question basing on an idiomatic expression if you are not sure about it. Always look for other differences among the answer choices, I'm sure there will be one or two.
In this specifically question, I would start with the differences in the beginning of the answer choices, rather than those in the end. Achieving a concistency or achieving/achivement of farm animals? That's a purely logical question. Can animals be achieved? Can a consistency be achieved? Certainly not animals, so B, D and E are out. Now choosing between A and C I concentrate on another difference: conjunction 'as' versus conjunction 'that'. The conjunction 'as' means 'the same way as': the phrase 'achieving a consistancy the same way as once thought' doesn't make any sense. This way only C is left. Finally we did not have to know "thought to be" or "thought as". Anyway, the right expression is "thought to be".

Although there are many specultations concerning the changes in the GMAT, according to the official sources, there will not be any changes in the format of the test or in the types of questions. That's what GMAC itself says about the issue:
"GMAC® has no current plans to change the format of the exam or the types of questions it contains. The GMAT® exam will continue to assess verbal skills with reading comprehension, sentence correction, and critical reasoning questions; quantitative skills with problem solving and data sufficiency questions; and analytical writing abilities with two essays.
The test will still be delivered in the computer-adaptive format, and, starting in January 2006, the Council will offer the GMAT® test exclusively in this format. No more paper-based tests will be given."
The GMAT® will remain as valid and reliable as it is today. The scores on GMAT® exams delivered by Pearson VUE will be comparable to scores on GMAT® exams delivered by ETS®."
Even though there won't be any changes in the GMAT, I still advice that you start preparing for your test as soon as possible to leave yourself enough time for improving your score and working with applications.

I'm afraid there is no correct answer here. There must be "fewer" and "the number" in the right answer since the noun "drive-ins" is countable and plural. This way, by ruling out the answer choices with "less" and "amount" we are left with no answer choices.
The good news is that this question has definitely nothing to do with the real test – you have probably found it on one of the Internet GMAT dedicated sites, such as sentencecorrection.com
My advice to you is to practice only questions written by the official GMAT representitives (GMAC, ETS), such as the GMAT official guides or ETS GMAT disclosed editions. You can find them on ebay.com sometimes. This way you will really see what the GMAT questions are and avoid wasting your precious time, energy and memory on solving questions with no correct answers and questions not resembling the real test questions even a bit.

We have not planned courses for December yet, but I suggest that you take the course earlier anyway. Sometimes one course is not enough to reach the 700 score, and we give an option to repeat the course as many times as needed for free, so the earlier you start, the more possibilities you have.
Unfortunately, you can not repeat the test without essays. Well, theoretically you can, but the top universities will look at your score with suspicion if there are no essays there; they may also assume that you scored higher this time for a simple reason that you did the test without essays – it is definitely much easier.

Hi Assaf,
If you are going to apply for MBA abroad, you will certainly have to take the GMAT again, and this time to do it with essays. You will probably also have to improve your GMAT score if you think to apply to one of the top schools. I don't know what your GMAT score is, but most of the top schools require the full GMAT score around 700.

Hi Irene,
Just wanted to thank you for your awesome GMAT SC book. Much of my 740 score on the GMAT (took the test 3 days ago) I owe this book . Prior to reading your book I used to get, on average, only 3 out of 10 SCs correct, but after reading it, I managed to get almost every SC right. It helped me not only to improve my accuracy but also to increase my speed, thereby contributing to my peformance on the verbal section in general.

Has anybody in the forum used a home computer GMAT prep application, like Princeton GMAT 2005? I understand these are exactly like the actually CATs, and have helped raise many scores (as indicated in marketing materials).
The most help I need is within essay writing. Can anyone recommend good books to tackle this issue. There are many out there, but recommendations from, say Amazon.com, are all over the board, and not very helpful.
Are most porgrams in Israel is English or Hebrew? Are they helpful or just long-winded?
