    Oren!

I'm tired of those essays. If I don't enjoy sunlight, at least give me some humor in life. Also, I think that laughter in such times, can only motivate us, so keep on publishing!

And in that spirit, here is one for the MIT MBA applicants: (Itai – thats for you)

Reaching the end of a job interview, the Human Resources Person asked the young MBA fresh out of MIT, "And what starting salary were you looking for?"

The candidate responded, "In the neighborhood of $125,000 a year, depending on the benefits package."

The HR person said, "Well, what would you say to a package of 5-weeks vacation, 14 paid holidays, full medical and dental, company matching retirement fund to 50% salary, and a company car leased every two years – say a red Corvette?"

The graduate sat up mouth agape and said, "Wow! Are you kidding?"

And the HR person responded, "Certainly … but you started it!"

An American businessman stood at the pier of a small coastal village in Mexico, when a small boat carrying a lone Mexican fisherman docked. Inside the small boat were several large yellowfin tuna. The American complimented the Mexican on the quality of his fish and asked how long it took to catch them. The fisherman replied, “Only a little while.”
The American then asked, “If it took only a little while to catch these fine fish, why didn't you stay out longer and catch more fish?” The fisherman explained that this catch was enough to support his family's immediate needs.
The American then asked, “But what do you do with the rest of your time?”
The fisherman replied, “I sleep late, fish a little, play with my children, take a siesta with my wife, and stroll into the village each evening, where I sip wine and play guitar with my amigos. I have a full and busy life, señor.”
The American scoffed, “I am a Harvard MBA and could help you. You should spend more time fishing and with the proceeds buy a bigger boat. With the proceeds from the bigger boat you could buy several boats. Eventually, you would have a fleet of fishing boats. Instead of selling your catch to a middleman you would sell directly to the processor, eventually opening your own cannery. You would control the product, processing, and distribution. You would need to leave this small coastal fishing village and move to Mexico City, then L.A., and eventually New York City, where you would run your expanding enterprise.”
The fisherman asked, “But señor, how long will this all take?”
The American replied, “Fifteen to twenty years.”
“But what then, señor?” inquired the Mexican. The American laughed and said, “That's the best part. When the time is right, you would announce an IPO and sell your company stock to the public and become very rich. You would make millions.”
“Millions, señor? Then what?” asked the Mexican.
The American said, “Why, then you would retire, of course—move to a small coastal fishing village where you could sleep late, fish a little, play with your kids, take a siesta with your wife, and stroll into the village in the evenings, where you could sip wine and play your guitar with your amigos"

A young man rolls an overloaded cart to the checkout register in a Cambridge supermarket and starts to unload his many purchases.

The salesman ask: "Are you from Harvard or MIT?"

The young man proudly replies: "Harvard! How did you guess?"

Salesman points to the sign "10 purchases or less" and says: "Harvard students can't count, MIT students can't read"

Here are some real-life lessons for MBA Students (now that I have time to joke around after submitting HBS and Columbia):

    Case Study #1:

    Corporate Governance

A crow was sitting on a tree, doing nothing all day. A small rabbit saw the crow and asked him: "Can I also sit like you and do nothing all day long?" The crow answered: "Sure, why not." So, the rabbit sat on the ground below the crow, and rested. All of a sudden, a fox appeared, jumped on the rabbit and ate it.

Q: What can we learn from this?

A: To be sitting and doing nothing, you must be sitting very high up.

    Case Study #2:

    Ambition

A turkey was chatting with a bull. "I would love to be able to get to the top of that tree," sighed the turkey, "but I haven't got the energy. "Well, why don't you nibble on some of my droppings?" replied the bull. "They're packed with nutrients." The turkey pecked at a lump of dung and found that it actually gave him enough strength to reach the first branch of the tree. The next day, after eating some more dung, he reached the second branch. Finally after a fortnight, there he was proudly perched at the top of the tree. Soon he was promptly spotted by a farmer, who shot the turkey out of the tree.

    Case Study #3:

    Business Ethics

When the body was first made, all the parts wanted to be Boss. The brain said: "I should be Boss because I control the whole body's responses and functions." The feet said, "We should be Boss as we carry the brain about and get him to where he wants to go." The hands said, "We should be the Boss because we do all the work and earn all the money." And so it went on and on with the heart, the lungs and the eyes until finally the asshole spoke up. All the parts laughed at the idea of the asshole being the Boss. So the asshole went on strike, blocked itself up and refused to work. Within a short time the eyes became crossed, the hands clenched, the feet twitched, the heart and lungs began to panic and the brain fevered. Eventually they all decided that the asshole should be the boss, so the motion was passed. All the other parts did all the work while the boss just sat and passed out the shit!

Q: What can we learn from this?

A: You don't need brains to be a Boss – any asshole will do.

Q: What else can we learn from this?

A: Bullshit might get you to the top, but it won't keep you there.

    Some More:

    Eager to impress the Boss

A young MBA was leaving the office late one evening when he found the CEO standing in front of a shredder with a piece of paper in his hand.
"Listen," said the CEO, "this is a very sensitive and important document here, and my secretary has gone for the night. Can you make this thing work?"
"Certainly," said the young executive. He turned the machine on, inserted the paper, and pressed the start button.
"Excellent, excellent!" said the CEO as his paper disappeared inside the machine. "I just need one copy."

    Leadership vs. Management

When Noah heard the weather forecast he ordered the building of the ark.
    — that was Leadership

Then he looked around and said, "Make sure the elephants don't see what the rabbits are up to."
    — that was Management

Abe and Esther are flying to Australia for a two-week vacation to celebrate their 40th anniversary.Suddenly, over the public address system, the captain announces, "Ladies and Gentlemen, I am afraid I have some very bad news. Our engines have ceased functioning and we will attempt an emergency landing. Luckily, I see an uncharted island below us and we should be able to land on the beach. However, the odds are that we may never be rescued and will have to live on the island for the rest of our lives!"

Thanks to the skill of the flight crew, the plane lands safely on the island. An hour later, Abe turns to his wife and asks, "Esther, did we pay our $5,000 PBS pledge check yet"?
    "No, sweetheart," she responds.
Abe, still shaken from the crash landing, then asks, "Esther, did we pay our American Express card yet"?
"Oh, no! I'm sorry. I forgot to send the check," she says.
"One last thing, Esther. Did you remember to send checks for the Visa and MasterCard this month"? he asks.
"Oh, forgive me, Abe," begged Esther. "I didn't send that one, either."
Abe grabs her and gives her the biggest kiss in 40 years.Esther pulls away and asks him, "So, why did you kiss me"?
    Abe answers, "They'll find us!"

    Venture Capitalist Statements
    to Entrepreneurs

(What They Say vs. What They Mean)

    1. Submit your Business Plan. We'll look at it. (Our recycling profits are up 18% this year.)
    2. We'll get back to you. (We'll give to our intern if he doesn't have anything else to do.)
    3. We think your company is overvalued. (In fact it's undervalued, but we'd never tell you that.)
    4. We'll need to make some small changes in your Business Plan. (Starting with your participation.)
    5. 51% is just a formality. You'll still have complete control. (I'm putting my nephew in as president.)
    6. We don't expect our people to burn out. You can have a life. (We'll put a cot in your office.)
    7. We never hesitate to fund a good idea. (And yours ain't it.)
    8. Don't worry about that soft quarter. We're still solidly behind you. (The executive search team is already looking for your replacement.)
    9. Your founders shares are guaranteed to vest. (Immediately after revocation.)
    10. We won't interfere with your IPO. (What IPO?)
    11. Just think of us as a passive partner. (We'll be sending you our required vendors list.)
    12. We're very interested in your idea. (You're buying lunch.)

    Principle of Bad Debt
If you owe the bank $100, that's your problem. If you owe the bank $100 million, that's the bank's problem.

    Accounting Explained
A stock analyst and a Wall Street broker went to the races. The broker suggested they bet $10,000 on a horse. The analyst was skeptical, saying that he wanted first to understand the rules, to look on horses, etc. The broker whispered that he knew a secret algorithm for the success, but he could not convince the analyst.
    – "You are too theoretical," The broker said and bet on a horse. Surely, that horse came first bringing him a lot of money. Triumphantly, he exclaimed: "I told you, I knew the secret!"
    – "What is your secret?" the analyst asked.
    – "It is rather easy. I have two kids, three and five year old. I sum up their ages and I bet on number nine."
    – "But, three and five is eight," the analyst protested.
    – "I told you, you are too theoretical!" the broker replied, "Haven't I just shown experimentally that my calculation is correct?!"

    CML and SML
    * If you can count your money, you don't have a billion dollars.
    * A man is your client until proven broke.

    MM I, II & III
The market is weird. Every time one guy sells, another one buys, and they both think they're smart.

    Price & Markets
A physicist, a chemist, and an economist are shipwrecked on a desert island with only a can of beans to eat and no way to open it.
The physicist makes a suggestion: "I can calculate just the right angle, mass, and velocity of a projectile that will knock the top off the can."
    – "No!" the economist cries, "That might spill the beans."
    – The chemist then says, "I can make a compound from some local plants that will eat through the tin and open the can."
    – "Fool! That would contaminate the beans!" says the Economist.
Exasperated, the other two ask the economist if he has a plan.
    – "Of course!" says the economist, "The solution is simple. First, we assume we have a can opener…"

    Marketing Blunders
Colgate introduced a toothpaste in France called Cue, the name of a notorious porno magazine.
An American T-shirt maker in Miami printed shirts for the Spanish market to promote the Pope's visit. But instead of "I saw the Pope" (el papa), the shirts were emblazoned with "I saw the potato" (la papa).
In Italy, a campaign for Schweppes Tonic Water translated the name into "Schweppes Toilet Water."
When Braniff translated a slogan touting its upholstery, "Fly in Leather," it came out in Spanish as "Fly Naked."
Coors put its slogan, "Turn It Loose," into Spanish, where it was read as "Suffer From Diarrhea."
Chicken magnate Frank Perdue's line, "It takes a tough man to make a tender chicken," sounds much more interesting in Spanish: "It takes a sexually stimulated man to make a chicken affectionate."
When Vicks first introduced its cough drops on the German market, the company was chagrined to learn that the German pronunciation of "V" is "F" — the guttural equivalent of "sexual penetration."
Puffs tissues tried later to introduce its product, only to learn that "Puff" in German is a colloquial term for a whorehouse.
The Chevrolet Nova never sold well in Spanish-speaking countries. "No Va" means "no go" in Spanish.
When Pepsi started marketing its products in China a few years back, it translated its slogan, "Pepsi Brings You Back to Life," quite literally. In Chinese, it meant: "Pepsi Brings Your Ancestors Back from the Grave."
Clairol introduced the "Mist Stick," a curling iron, into Germany only to find out that mist is slang for poop. Not too many people had use for the poop stick.
Bacardi concocted a fruity drink with the name "Pavian" to suggest French chic, but "pavian" means baboon in German.
Scandinavian vacuum manufacturer Electrolux used the following in an American ad campaign: "Nothing sucks like an Electrolux."
The name Coca-Cola in China was first rendered as Ke-kou-ke-la. Unfortunately, Coke did not discover until after thousands of signs had been printed that the characters mean "bite the wax tadpole" or "female horse stuffed with wax," depending on the dialect. Coke then researched 40,000 characters and found a close phonetic equivalent, "ko-kou-ko-le," which can be loosely translated as "happiness in the mouth."
Also in Chinese, the Kentucky Fried Chicken slogan "finger-lickin' good" came out as "eat your fingers off."
The American slogan for Salem cigarettes, "Salem — Feeling Free," got translated in the Japanese market into "When smoking Salem, you feel so refreshed that your mind seems to be free and empty."
Ford had a similar problem in Brazil when the Pinto flopped. The company found out that Pinto was Brazilian slang for "tiny male genitals." Ford pried all the nameplates off and substituted Corcel, which means horse.
Hunt-Wesson introduced its Big John products in French Canada as Gros Jos before finding out that the phrase, in slang, means "big breasts." In this case, however, the name problem did not have a noticeable effect on sales.
Japan's second-largest tourist agency was mystified when it entered English-speaking markets and began receiving requests for unusual sex tours. Upon finding out why, the owners of Kinki Nippon Tourist Co. changed its name.
