הציגה בחורה בשם ג'ואנה זיסיס. היא התמקדה במה שמייחד את שיקגו. הדברים שבלטו עבורי היו:

1. סירוב להסתפק בידע הקיים ומאמץ קבוע לייצר ידע חדש ולפתח על בסיס הקיים.

2. יכולת לשלוט לחלוטין בתחום הלימודים שלך – קורס חובה בודד בלבד.

3. קמפוסים במדינות זרות.

כמו כן, הוזכרו דברים בהים יש דמיון לתוכניות המובילות האחרות – מגוון רחב של רקעים לתלמידים, דגש על בינלאומיות.

עוד נושאים שהוזכרו/נאמרו לי לאחר ההרצאה על ידי גב' זיסיס.

1. GMAT הוא לא הכל

2. מאוד אוהבים ישראלים – ויקחו את כל מי שנראה להם מתאים (אין מספר מקסימלי של ישראלים)

3. APPLY. אל תניח שאתה לא מתאים גם אם אתה לא הפרופיל הסטנדרטי (780, 4.0, מנהל 217 איש) – תיגש ותן להם להחליט.

לאחר דבריה של גב' זיסיס התחלקו לשיחות עם הבוגרים. חלק מהבוגרים הכרתי מכנס קודם וחלק לא היו מוכרים. כולם היו מאד נחמדים,. שמחו לנדב אינפורמציה על ביתה ספר ולסייע. כל מי שדיברתי איתו היה נפעם מהחוויה שעבר בשיקגו והאמין שהבחירה ללכת לשם היתה אחת ההחלטות הטובות בחייו.

Fantastic news from the Chicago GSB!


The school was endowed a gift of $300M from one of its most successful alumni, Mr. David Booth, the chairman and CEO of Dimensional Fund Advisors. The endowment is the largest in magnitude ever given to a business school or to a university in the united states by an individual.

Following this phenomenal development, especially in today’s status of capital markets, the trustees of the university have unanimously decided to name the school after Mr. Booth. From now on, our school will be called The Chicago Booth School of Business.

Quoting dean Snyder, this is one of the most important milestones in positioning the school as a leader among the world’s business community. Among other speakers were professor Eugene Fama and the university’s president Professor Zimmer.

I am pretty surprised by the unusual number as well. A few days ago, I spoke with a professor who told me that the dean is gathering the faculty for some big announcement (before the public announcement) and he assumed the reason might be something like this, but the amount is really mind blowing.

I don't know if it's related, but usually when speaking about endowments, matching programs are corporates that will match their employees' contributions. So, if an employee will give to the school x$ and the corporation he works in has a matching program then the school will get x$ from him and another x$ from the company, but will consider the donation as a 2*X$ donation made by the employee – this is important for the individual since universities recognize different amounts of donations in different ways (if you give a lot you might get the school to be named after you..).

Inspired by my Taxes and Strategy class, I am thinking that in this case Mr. Booth probably had tax considerations in mind – since individuals' tax deduction limit is low, he probably mixed a little bit of individual contribution with (more than 1-to-1) matching by his corporation; so the corporation gave equity (and perhaps cash) on behalf of the individual and received a tax shield (since it is a deductible expenditure) on atleast a large part of the amount. On the other hand, you might have read "matching programs" in a different context and the taxes course is simply influencing me too much…

I'm curious what you guys think this will mean for the Booth School? Every speaker kepts speaking about being the best B-school in the world (A title Chicago had a claim for even before the donation), but what will this mean for the school on a day to day basis?

Larger class size? (Is this something the school would want?) More programs/lecturers? More scholarships?

I actually heard the term on the live broadcast of the Dean's speech, and your explanation actually fits the context. Maybe he meant that they are dedicating 100 million to match donations from the outside targetted at specific goals.

so if for example I donate 2 million to one program, the school would match it.

Thanks gileyal. I contacted admissions, and they said that they have a few interview spots in Raanana and Ramat Gan. These options did not show up for me in the interview search application, and the excel sheet they have of the off-campus interview sites also does not include Israel. I am trying to schedule an interview through admissions, so it should work out ok.

It actually turns out to be even crazier than we thought. On top of the 300M$ he gave, Booth offers a 100M$ matching with alums, so if all alums together donate 100M$ he will give another 100M$, so the total will be half a billion ! It was definitely the talk of the day on campus, so it's been pretty exciting..

Good luck with interviews and touch base if you have any last minute Qs..

Yesterady we had the golden gargoyles event. It is an amazing fun night in which the 2nd years put on a ridiculous show followed by the screening the 1st year cohorts' movie clips. Each cohort prepared clips competing in several categories; one of the categories was "Best TV Spoof" – I realllly liked that one and decided to share :)
