אני חושבת שדלית סיכמה את זה יפה, ואני יכולה להגיד לך בוודאות שאין שום חיסרון בללמוד באירופה על פני ארה"ב. הדגש הגדול הוא (וזה משפט שחשוב מאוד לזכור) – היבשת בה תלמד היא גם היבשת בה תעבוד, ולכן השאלה היא איפה אתה רוצה לחיות לא רק בזמן הלימודים אלא גם קצת אחרי (בהנחה שאתה מתכנן להישאר כמה שנים בחו"ל). לונדון היא לונדון. וגם מי שלומד בצרפת ובטופ-5 של אירופה מגיע בד"כ לעבוד בלונדון (בערך 70%). אני חושבת שיותר מזה, דווקא באירופה יש לנו "הזרים" הרבה יותר סיכוי להתברג מאשר בארה"ב – לונדון היא לא עיר של בריטים. לונדון היא פשוט עיר בינלאומית ואת אותו מגוון האנשים שתמצא בתוכניות האירופאיות תמצא אח"כ ביום יום בלונדון וזה הופך (מבחינתי לפחות) את לונדון למקום העבודה המועדף עלי (אני לא יודעת עד כמה הצלחת לעקוב אחרי כאן אבל כרגע התקבלתי ללונדון ואני מחכה לתשובות מאינסאד השבוע כדי לקבל החלטה…). אז נכון שמשרדי מקינזי בלונדון הם בערך המשרדים הכי תחרותיים שיש, אבל בסה"כ עצם העניין הוא שהמגוון קיים, בכל התחומים שאני בדקתי השכר מותאם בערכו גם אל מול עלות המחייה וגם אל מול ה"תחרות" האמריקאית.

ולגבי השכר לעומת עלות המחייה, בוגר מחמשת בתי הספר המובילים בעולם ברוויחים פחות או יותר סכום זהה, אבל המחייה בלונדון יקרה בהרבה.

Aren't you waiting for your HBS answer this week too?

I agree with your assumption that London is a great city to work, learn and live in. However, I believe that even if you learn in Europe you can still work in the U.S. of for a U.S. company. The opposite direction (from U.S. to Europe) for work, in my opinion is more complicated. In many ways it is similar to trying to get a job here in Israel right after you graduate (without experience..).

Do I understand you correctly that you prefer LBS or Insead over HBS because of Europe?

Getting a job in the UK after graduating from a US school is easier than the other way. there are a few reasons:
1. Visa – much much easier these days
2. Brand – US schools are well known in EU while LBS is just starting to build its brand there

and to 123456: about Google, if you fgured out their EU recruitment process please share your insights. to me it is one of the biggest mysteries of the whole MBA experience. It is probably the most random and complicated process that I have ever seen.

שליש מהכיתה הולכים לעבוד לא בבנקים ולא בחברות יעוץ. שליש.

השליש הזה נמצא בהרבה תחומים אחרים, בהם כל תחום הפארמה והמדיקל, הייטק, והנפט (נו, אויל אנד גז, אבל אין לי כח לעבור לאנגלית).

בתחום של יזמות הבי"ס סופר חזק!!!!!!
הקורסים ביזמות הם מהפופולרים, יש המון תחרויות של ביזנס פלנס שנשפטות ע"י VCמהשורה הראשונה, בקיץ יש לך אפשרות לעשות סאמר סקול ביזמות במקום אינטרנשיפ, בו אתה עובד על הרעיון העיסקי שלך (אה, כן, שכחתי לציין שבכל הקורסים הרגילים ביזמות יש לך את האופציה לעבוד על רעיונות אמיתיים שלך או של חברים שלך).

בתחום של טכנולוגיה, מגייסות החברות הבאות (רשימה חלקית): סיסקו, אוויה, גוגל, יאהו, האניוול, אקספדיה, אמזון, סקייפ, מיקרוסופט.
ל-BT יש תכנית מצוינת לMBA. ממש ממש מצוינת!!
ואני משוכנעת ששכחתי כמה (גם הטלקום וחברות מדיה מגייסות הרבה).

הבצפר גם השיק השנה את ה Institute of Technology – מכון המחקר בנושאי טכנולוגיה בשיתוף עם UCL (אחד מבתי הספ הטובים להנדסה).
השנה הטק קלאב גם מרים את הכנס הראשון בנושא טכנולוגיה.

אני לא אגיד שהבצפר ממש שם בתחום של הטכנולוגיה, אבל הוא בהחלט בדרך.
בכל ראיון שלי אני רואה גם אנשים מאינסאד. האמת היא, לא ברור לי מה הערך המוסף (כלומר לא בטוחה שיש כזה) לאינסאד ע"פ LBS בתחום הזה.

בסופו של דבר, שני בתיה"ס פונים לאוכלוסיות דומות מבחינת Career Goals. ההבדלים המהותיים יותר הם בסביבת הלימודים (כרך עירוני תוסס מול כפר באמצע יער) ומשך הלימודים (10-12 חודשים מול 15-21 חודשים).

בכל אופן, אני לא מתיימר להכריע מי מהשניים יותר טוב, כי מן הסתם התשובה לשאלה זו הינה מאוד אישית, אבל אני חושב שיש הרבה מאוד אנשים שמגישים לשניהם, וזה לדעתי מעיד על הדמיון יותר מאשר על השוני…

גדעון, לגבי הייטק (הגדולות) חשוב לזכור שבאירופה יש בעיקר חברות אמריקאיות. אם אתה מכוון אליהן ממילא אז לדעתי כדאי לך לכוון לקליפורניה או סיאטל, שם תהיה לך השפעה ברמת מטה.

לגבי יזמות, אנגליה היא מקום אדיר מבחינה זו. גם LBS וגם INSEAD יביאו אותך למחוז חפצך. ל-INSEAD אגב יש את רשת הבוגרים הגדולה בלונדון, אחוז גדול מאוד מהבוגרים מקימים עסק תוך 5 שנים, ולרוב בוגרים אחרים הם משקיעי הסיד!

OK, my interviewer is Oren Gazenfeld… Does that ring a bell for anyone?

Also, should I be worried about the presentation portion of the interview? Are there other issues that I should be aware of?

I'm preparing towards this interview with the basic Why MBA? Why LBS? Why now? questions in mind. In addition, I assume it would be a good idea to send a message that I will be active within the student community… Am I mising any other key points?

Finally, I was told by LBS that my interviewer has received my entire application – does anyone know if this includes my CV and recommendations?

Ilan, you make a good point, but I think your approach is somewhat negative to begin with. All I did was make very general and innocent inquiry. I didn't attempt to solicit my interviewer or anyone who knows him…

Maybe it's only me, but I fail to see how asking if someone knows someone else (and nothing more!) in a public forum constitutes foul play. Had I publicly slandered or even just informed the forum of all I could dig up on this person and ask for "favors" from people who know him, then I would definitely have been at fault. However, all I did was mention a name, and ask if anyone stumbled accross that name before – I truly believe it doesn't get any more innocent than that!

That said, I thank you for your input and offer my sincere apologies if you feel as if I have taken advantage of you or anyone else in this forum!

Here's my personal breakdown between LBS and INSEAD:

• Costs (both direct and indirect) – INSEAD is significantly preferable to LBS.
• Alumni network – I believe INSEAD's is better.
• Location – Definitely a moot point! I think that London trumps Fonty/Sing, but I plan to work in London post-MBA, so I might just prefer INSEAD's "different" location(s).
• Intensity – LBS is preferable (i.e. IMHO it's less intensive than INSEAD).
• Academic quality – I can't really pass judgment, so let's call it a tie.
• International exposure – I think that INSEAD is slightly favorable to LBS, but this is definitely arguable.
• Career Goals – I highly doubt that one school won't open doors the other school would, so I'd call it a tie here as well… That said, I admit that it seems that LBS is better for Finance and that INSEAD is better for Consulting.

I think these are the key elements of debate, and it all comes down to the weights each of us assigns to these elements…

As I've mentioned above, LBS is favorable to INSEAD in some aspects, and my personal circumstances might actually see me prefer London to Fontainebleau (as my wife is a British national and has actually already received a couple of job offers in the UK!)

If I were free of familial obligations, I would probably sign on with INSEAD rather than LBS – mainly due to brand name, location/community and lower tuition, living and opportunity costs.

My 2 cents:

A generic comparison is a very hard thing to do – it really depends on the situation (Post MBA goals, past experience, marital status and so forth).

Alumni – INSEAD has more Israeli alums. However, for those looking to work in London, studying here for two years, a tube-ride away to the network is priceless. I guess this feature is shared mostly with Columbia/NYU.

Location – it is more than the City vs. the forest. The ability to communicate with your future recruiters near their offices is again priceless (same as above). Other than that – London is fun, and Pricy…

Career Goal – I think this is really the 'crucks' of the decision'. This is where everyone must make their calculations right.

Top MBAs open similar doors, but it opens different doors for different people. One big London plus is the 2-year program. One must not undervalue having a 2-year program. Its an opportunity for ‘career-changers’ to make their CV ‘readable’ (e.g. working for s top law-firm or a prominent start-up is ‘interesting’ when you apply to school, but is ‘meaningless’ to the HR rep that reads an anonymous CV). Furthermore – There is literally a 2^nd chance at nailing your favourite job.

Intensity – I assume London is easier. People may value it differently.

Academic perspective – Can’t say

Hi Yariv,

as at the time of your visit it is still spring break, I would suggest contacting the admissions office to make sure you will be able to sit in a lecture during your visit (there are very few classes running that week in a special format of a block week, i.e. 5 full days in one week rather than 10 sessions spread over the term).

I would be in town but probably not in school.
if you don't mind meeting me with a crying baby over my shoulder please send me an email closer to your visit (at the moment I am able to plan only a few hours ahead…)

you can also send me an email and I will see if any of the other israelis are in town or still working on their tan somewhere else.
