    Hi all,
Just returned from Evanston where I rented an apartment for next
fall. I want to share some tips for apartment search for the benefit
of other admits. Fell free to add more tips/ideas, or ask anything.
    – A great place to start is current students in 2nd year. These
students usually leave their apartment in July/Aug and can give you
an unbiased opinion of their apartment. They can also recommend their
    friends apartments.
    – Most apartments for rent are managed by a management company (and
usually owned by it too). A good company is crucial – you don't want
to be stuck with mice, no heat etc. Again, ask the current tenant if
he can recommend the company. I have seen a great apartment, I almost
took it and then talked with the tenant who told me frightening
stories about irresponsible management company, problems in the
    building, etc.
    – For cold places – verify that the rent includes heat or consider
the heat for your budget (it can be expensive). Verify (again, with
current tenant) that the apartment heating works well enough.
    – Usually it best to avoid undergrads (well, in my opinion). Check if
there are apartment in the building that are rented for undergrads.
    – Parking might be a problem in some places, especially very cold
ones or in down-town areas. Consider parking cost while deciding.

    Hello everybody
I'm interested to know if anybody can provide some guidance about the
    visa application process.
Which papers should be submitted? Should I do it in person?
Should I provide letters from banks stating my financial situation?
Should I expect be invited to an interview?
    Thanks!

    Hi all,

I have been to the embassy. Here is a "shopping list" I hope you find
    helpful:

    1. Try to get there at 7:30; later on there is a really long line.

    2. Your photo should be 5cmX5cm and with white background, stapled to
the DS-156 page, not on the face.

    3. Women need to fill the DS-156 and the DS-158; men need to fill the
DS-157 in addition. All documents can be downloaded from the site at
    face=Miriam Fixed color=#0000ffhttp://usembassy-israel.org.il/publish/noniv.htm (scroll down a
    little)

*** They don't let you carry cell phones and handhelds to the room
so if you plan to fill the forms at the embassy bring a piece of
paper with all the information you need.

    4. You need to pay 500 shekels per applicant at "Bank HaDoar" before
you arrive at the embassy. They have the necessary form; you can pay
with cash only. The list of branches that offer this service is
    provided at
    face=Miriam Fixed color=#0000ffhttp://www.postil.com/unitinfouser.nsf/All/EE2A181382F8B54D42256D20003
    12C5D?OpenDocument

    5. For the married ones, bring a copy of your marriage certificate. I
don't know why, I was asked to do so.

    6. For all, bring a copy of the letter from the bank that you
provided for your I-20 form. The clerk at the embassy said this may
    help prevent an interview invitation.

    7. If you are planning to send your furniture, make a copy of your
passport before going to the embassy, cause they hold on to your
    passport for a while.

    8. If you can, try to bring any letter proving your connection to
Israel: letter proving you have a property here, letter from a
company planning to employ you upon return etc. It is not necessary
but may help prevent an interview invitation.

    Good luck,
    Roni Karassik

Does anybody know if it is possible to open a USD checking acount

    Roy and everyone,
Unfortunately, you can not open a bank account from Israel.
The main reason for that would be the lack of social security number
or any other form of identification. What most people do is go to the
social security office as soon as they arrive to the US and apply for
a SSN. Obtaining the official card would take a couple of weeks, but
you can get the number after 24 hours by dialing to an automatic
service. As soon as you've got the number, you could walk into the
bank and open a checking account.
On that issue I would also add that you should expect to receive a
credit card. The only thing you could apply for and get is a debit
card and a for a credit card only afetr several months (assuming you
don't have prior credit history in the US).

    Hi,
Most schools have a computer purchase program that includes
software, configuration and support — so it is really not worth it
to buy a computer in Israel. you may save a few bucks, but regret it
later. Installing hebrew font is very simple, and I am sure you can
all do it on your own.
If there are any specific questions about the Kellogg laptop
program, I am happy to help.

    cheers, Gal.

You can get an American Express Blue card for students without credit history. You can apply online and they would send the card via mail. Also, I was able to open my bank account before obtaining a social security number so I guess that the policy varies betwwen banks (Fleet bank in Boston)

    Good Luck,

I suggest the forum should be in English, or Hebrew & English.

It is the Israeli INTERNATIONAL MBA Forum. It may be used by others
who are interested in recruiting Israeli MBAs, or who wish, for
whatever reason, to learn more about us.

What do others think about this?

I agree that the discussion should be in English. Another reason is
that many people residing outside Israel have trouble reading Hebrew.

Beside discussions – site navigation should be in English but some of
the content might be in Hebrew.

    My opinion.

Yaron, I'm not sure I am answering your exact question but anyway:

There are 50-60 Israelis in US top schools and about 10 in EUropean (according to our contact list and with doing some estimations about not listed students).

I am not sure what is the acceptance rate for Israelis but my guess that it is similar to the evarage for each school?

Just out of curiosity — does "the list" contain the #1 MBA program in the U.S. for entrepreneurship for 10 years in a row (according to U.S. News), the #1 hidden-gem MBA (according to WSJ), and the #3 MBA program in the world for entrepreneurship (according to FT)?

Yes, the ranking should be taken with a grain of salt , but I thought the latest and greatest of U.S. News for entrepreneurship (2004) would help you resolve that dilemma…

I really think we should not stick to any specific list. I believe that this forum should be as some kind of “home” to any MBA Israeli international student.

I have a question for those of you already in the US, or alumni.

I never wore a suit in my life (not even Bar-Mitzva or wedding…). Any suggestions of: What to buy, where to buy, colors, buttons, etc. ?

    limorsinay

I would wait to get here first, and then buy. It usually depends on the industry: banking is more formal (they look at the brand of the suit) than consulting (if you wear a suit that's fine if it looks good) which is more formal than regular industry (usually no suits at all). And within an industry it depends on the job, some jobs require more formal wear than others (for example if you are a consultant working with banks than you are expected to wear brand suits or if you are working in the strategy group in the bio-industry you wear a tie etc.)
So I hope this helps; My advice, don't buy anything until you know exactly what you need it for. I bought a suit that has still not exited my closet… a waste of time and money.

I would stick to the regular business suit:
    3 buttons
normal (meaning not double breasted or cut back)
    navy blue or black
    preferably no "pensim"
a good suit would cost from 1200 NIS in Israel to 3000 NIS for a HUGO Boss suit
OR you can wait and buy one in NY for ~ 200-300$
any diversification from the offered spec would have some implications, there is a lot of meaning in the suit ones
    wear.
The problem in buying a suit in Israel is that people buy suits for Bar-Mitvas and Wedding mostly, so the sellers don't
have a clue regarding business suits
    hope is helps

Go with a blue suit – 3 buttons

Your shirt should be either white or blue

With a matching tie (can be red for the blue shirt or blue/grey for the white shirt)

Your shoes should be black and match your black belt

    VISA APPLICATION NEWS

For those of you who haven't yet submitted their application to the US embassy in Tel-Aviv, here's some news that may be of interest*:
    (1) As of June 16, you are no longer allowed to submit the material yourself, and will have to forward it through your travel agent (notice no lines since yesterday…)
    (2) Instead of the usual 2-week period that was customary until now for MBA applicants, the new wait period will be 30 DAYS – 3 MONTHS (yes, don't wait !!!)
    (3) Starting July 1st, perhaps sooner, ALL applicants will be going through interviews.

    Get it while you can…

This article seems a bit old, probably from around the heydays of the late 1990's.

In general, and especially in periods like this, you can't really go wrong with a 2-button suit. The guy who wrote this works for John Varvatos, and even on their website you can see that all business suits for the spring/summer 2003 collection are two-button.

    קראתי את זה בYNET:

"על פי כתבה שהתפרסמה אתמול, משרד החוץ החליט להקל על הפונים לויזות סטודנט, לפחות בקשר לתקופת ההמתנה לויזה. להלן מלל הכתבה:

State Department Puts Foreign Students and Professors First in
    Line for Visa Interviews

    By MICHAEL ARNONE
    The Chronicle of Higher Education

Under pressure from college advocacy groups, the U.S.
Department of State has told its overseas consular offices to
schedule students, professors, and researchers first in
interviews that are part of antiterrorism screenings of nearly
all visa applicants. Copies of the notice were sent by telegram on June 3 by Janice
    L. Jacobs, deputy assistant secretary for visa services. The
message tells all diplomatic and consular posts to "give
priority to students and exchange visitors in the professor,
    student, and research-scholar categories."

The telegram, which the State Department did not publicize,
modifies a May message that required almost all foreigners
seeking visas — millions of people — to have in-person
interviews with consular officials before getting approval for
the documents. The program scrutinizes foreign visitors more
closely in the hopes of weeding out potential terrorists. All
consular offices must begin following the rule by August 1.

College officials are afraid that the requirement will lead to
increased delays that will keep students and scholars from
arriving on campuses in time for the fall term. By requiring
so many people to have interviews, "we were afraid that our
people would just get lost in the queue," said Victor C.
Johnson, associate executive director of NAFSA: Association of
    International Educators.
Reports are already circulating of foreign students and
scholars who cannot obtain visa interviews before they are due
on their campuses, Mr. Johnson said. He and other college
officials fear that the delays will discourage foreign
students and scholars from coming to American institutions to
    study, teach, or do research.

    Hi all,

I would appreciate it if any of you knows of an open Associate position in a VC in Israel for a recent graduate (with distinction) of a top-5 b-school in the US with prior background in biotech.

If you have any ideas, please send me an email to: [email protected]

Thanks a lot for any leads and help.

    Amit,

    Thanks for the info!

I'm supposed to be summoned for a reserves activity in October. Shuold I notify them that I'm leaving the country before I get summoned, or should I wait until they send me an official letter ?

    Thanks,

    Ariel.

    Gad,

I know that ELAL offered internships in Wharton for their BD / corporate strategy team. unfortuently I deleted the e-mail. If you know someone in McKinsey Israel, he can probably introduce you to this team.

    good luck,

    stam

    Hi all,

following several requests we were able to cut a deal with the ARMANI store in Kikar Hamedina in Tel-Aviv, they agreed to sell us suit in a very respectable discount (25%+) they say we can buy suits for ~ 3500 NIS which is way better than the 6000+ regular price. if anyone is interested, you should go to the store and ask for Shimi or Ernesto and say you are from the students that are going to study abroad

    hope it helps

    A

I would not buy suits here if I were you. If you don't know your way around suits, you never know what you might get: you may arrive to the States with your brand new suit only to find out that the color is inappropriate, that the cut is too European or generally too hip (anyone said euro-trash?), that the side pockets have no flaps, pants are too narrow, or that the fabric isn't really that great. In addition, you never know if the stitches are real or fused, and also, they might give you a suit containing polyester — a very big no-no (if the suit looks literally shiny, i.e reflects light, don't buy it).

If I were you, I'd go to a decent store in the US and spend a few hundred dollars on a suit that the salesman says is appropriate for business. (for a first suit I'd go to a respectable Dept. store, or if you have the money and the desire, to a good tailor. Don't go to some small, anonymous men's wear store owned by whomever).

    The general guidelines are:

    • No black suits for business functions at all (only for social occasions). Buy dark-grey/charcoal-grey or navy.
    • 2-3 buttons (2 is the better choice right now)
    • Must have pocket flaps
    • Regular breast pocket
    • Pure Wool, no synthetics
    • No fused stitches. They'll break apart.
    • Go with plain texture for your first 1-2 suits and not pin-striped.
    • Buy decent, tasteful, black shoes and keep them shined. (Though some colors are preferably worn with brown/burgundy shoes and belts).
    • Wear decent-quality suits, not the absolutely cheapest on the wrack. Many people can tell.
    • My personal favorite pant style is pleated (i.e has a fold in the middle) and with cuffs at the bottom. I think it looks much classier than the flat front.
    • Buy a few long-sleeve, plain-texture, white and pale-blue dress shirts, with a spread-collar (not button-down). Later on you can expand your wardrobe to include fancier shirts with special hues and textures.
    • Buy a few silk ties. Never wear the same color shirt and tie together unless you absolutely know what you're doing.

Check out this FedEx ad. Little bit of humor at the expense of MBAs is great!

Does anyone have experience with extending a J-1 visa (for the 18M academic training period rather than issuing an H1B) in Israel or Canada?

    Thanks,

    Ido

I did not go through that yet, but as far as I understand you only need that the school's international office (or the relative office in your school) sign up the documents for you (you do not need INS aproval on top of that). However, you HAVE to have a job offer to work in the US.

But if you have all the documents, I guess the university officer can do it through snail mail. Bottom line, ask them.

    Not sure if that helps…

I welcome myself on board, since I've been admitted to Wharton.

Nice to see the history here!
