Regarding your second question, search slovo’s response to Laker as well as my reply to Eyal in this forum. If you have any additional questions, feel free to contact me (my email is published several times in the forum).

Finally, your third question:
I’ll tell you what schools don’t like: they don’t like answers to “Why My School” that smell like a template that was copied and pasted from another application with the only difference being the school’s name (sometimes people even forget insert the correct name!). Trust me, they can sense these templates from Kilometers…
And really, if you are about to spend 2 years of school, ~$200K, and make this huge step that would take your career forward – I’m sure you want to make sure that the school you’ll attend will help you achieve your goals. Therefore, spend a good amount of time on researching the school, thinking what you would want to do when you graduate, which industries you are interested in, what skills are you missing—and then find out what is it that the specific school has that can help you get there (a few examples: a course, club, an annual event, a professor, a certain teaching method, a certain “atmosphere” that the school creates and promotes and so on). True, there is no limit to how deep you can go, and you could spend hours and hours taking to students/doing your own research just to write 50 words in the application. But when an application reader has 100 amazing applications in front of him/her and now they have to pick 10 to admit- those 50 words (which reflect your seriousness, engagement, and understanding of the schools technicalities and spirit) can make all the difference.

Adding anything to Anat's great answer would be a tough call indeed, but only one little tip: in retrospect, travelling to the schools and having your own gaze can make a tremendous difference. It's not just the new people that you'd meet and the extra tip you'd add to your candidacy, it's mainly the deeper understanding of the particular school and its values that helped me.

The downside is obviously the cost, but if you get to think of it, you're in a process that probably cost you a lot of money already, and if accepted, you'd be spending the price of a decent 2 bedroom apartment in a good location in Israel. That having said, would you not take the extra mile?

אז ככה: אני אנסה לתת תשובה לגבי וורטון באופן ספציפי. יחד עם זאת, הייתי בודק לגבי כל בתי הספר הפוטנציאלים שלך עם חבר'ה שכבר לומדים שם, למרות שזה פחות או יותר דומה.

לדעתי תזדקק ל-1-2 ימים בכל אוניברסיטה, בכפוף ללוגיסטיקה, שמסתבכת כפונקציה של בתי הספר שאתה מתעתד לבקר בהם (סטנפורד או טאק למשל יכולים להוסיף שעות ארוכות של התניידות בדרכים). הייתי מתכנן את הביקור כאשר מתקיימים לימודים אך לא מתקיימות בחינות או ראיונות בבית הספר (משתנה לפי בתי הספר).

בבתי הספר יש מסלול מסודר של התרשמות, שכולל בד"כ שיעור או שניים לדוגמא, סיור היכרות, ארוחת צהריים ו- Q&A עם נציג מוועדת הקבלה (דרך מצויינת ליצור קשר אישי – כדאי להגיע מוכנים מאוד). כדאי לבדוק באתרים של בתי הספר, כיוון שבדרך כלל יש דרך להירשם לאירועים אלו מראש. כמובן שרצוי להגיע בתאריכים שאתה קובע, כדי לשדר רצינות.

לגבי וורטון – הסמסטר הראשון מתחיל השנה בשבוע הראשון של ספטמבר, וימי הלימודים הם שני-חמישי. כידוע, בוורטון יש לא מעט ישראלים וכולנו נשמח מאוד להיפגש ולהציג את אחד מבתי הספר הטובים בעולם.

אחד היתרונות של וורטון הוא שבבית ספר של 800 תלמידים בשנה יש אנשים כמעט מכל רקע שתוכל לחשוב עליו.

לגבי תעשיית המזון והCPG, מספר מכובד מבני המחזור שלי בוורטון עבדו לפני התואר או הלכו לעבוד לאחר התואר בתפקידי שיווקניהול מוצר בתחום הזה בחברות כמו UNILEVER ,P&G ודומות.

לגבי משפחות עם ילדים, יש לא מעט (אם עדיין מיעוט) סטודנטים בוורטון עם ילדים, ויש מסגרות בבית הספר שעוזרות לחבר בין בניבנות הזוג, יחד עם זאת אני ממליץ בחום כן לחפש מראש עיסוק לבןבת הזוג במידת האפשר (עבודה, תואר מתקדם, המשך של עבודה מהארץ במשרה חלקית וכד). מנסיון, זה עוזר.

אני לא זוכר ספציפית אם יש מועדון כדורסל בוורטון, אבל בשנה שלי היו מספר קבוצות שנפגשו לשחק כל שבוע. בכל אופן, זו תמיד הזדמנות להקים מועדון כזה אם לא קיים עדיין.

לגבי הביקור שלך באוקטובר, אני מאד ממליץ להפגש עם כמה חברה ישראלים מוורטון מהclass של 2009 ו2010, אני בטוח שהם ישמחו לקחת אותך לצהרים ולענות על כל שאלה שתהייה לך. חוץ מזה כדאי לתאם את הביקור עם בית הספר.

Wharton offers impeccable opportunities in CPG and marketing. Like Itai said, many of our peers are choosing to puruse a post-MBA position in all the top firms in the US and Europe.

Wharton in general, and the Israeli community in particular, are extremely welcoming to families. First and second year Israelis have currently 5 children (with several underway…) .

1. I would like to join the basketball club, do you have any detail on it?

I would encouarge you to do some reserach about the 100+ clubs Wharton offers. Not only is there an active basketball club, but we also have two former professional Israeli basketball players that are currently studying at Wharton, and I believe there is at least one more that is applying to the class of 2011.

1. I plan to visit beginning of October, do you have any advices?

לגבי ייעוץ אסטרטגי בוורטון: וורטון נחשב לאחד מבתי הספר החזקים ביותר שמהם מגיעים לייעוץ אסטרטגי. נדמה לי שעמיתי סלובו פרסם כאן כמה סטטיסטיקות בנושא בעבר. רק כדי לסבר את האוזן, בשנה שעברה שלוש החברות המובילות (McKinsey, BCG, Bain) "חילקו" יותר מ-120 הצעות עבודה לעבודות קיץ בלבד. מספר חברות מציעות הזדמנויות כגון תחרות ייעוץ לסטודנטים (בחלקן כוללים הפרסים הצעת עבודה בכל סניף בעולם ללא ראיון).

התכנית בוורטון מציעה מגוון עשיר ביותר של הזדמנויות לצבור ניסיון פרקטי בייעוץ. הייתי מציע לבדוק האתרים של וורטון לעומק. על קצה המזלג, זו השנה השלושים של תכנית ה-Global Consulting Practicum, שמציעה פרויקט ייעוץ אמיתי במדינות כמו צ'ילה, סין, ספרד, הודו, פרו ועוד רבות וטובות (התכנית התחילה בישראל וממשיכה במלוא הקצב). בנוסף, ישנן תכניות ייחודיות שמציעות ייעוץ למלכ"רים, לעסקים קטנים וכו'. אם תרצי לשאול שאלות ספציפיות אחרי המחקר, את מוזמנת.

לגבי קבוצות הלימוד: ככלל, פילוסופיית הלימודים בוורטון היא של מעורבות סטודנטים בכל תהליך באופן המקיף והעמוק ביותר (אפשר לראות הודעות קודמות בפורום הזה). קבוצות הלימוד, בנות 5-6 סטודנטים, מלוות את כל השנה הראשונה ברוב המקצועות. משקל ניכר לציון, ובפרט לחווייה, נקבעים לפי איכות העבודה בקבוצה. בקבוצה שלי בשנה שעברה היו, בין השאר, מֶאַפּרת מצרפת, בנקאי אמריקאי, יזם סיני, ומנהלת שיווק מקוריאה. זו הייתה חווייה בלתי רגילה מהרבה בחינות, ובעיניי – בפרט מבחינה תרבותית.

Managed to solve it myself…

All you guys who are going to schedule interviews in the coming days:

You're supposed to select Country of Interview and also state or city of interview.

According to the official guidelines, you're supposed to select N/A for state (if you're not interviewing in the US) and the city in which you'd like the interview to take place. Try that first, but if that doesn't work, simply select Israel as the country, and leave the two other fields on the "–select–" option.

You'll get the 3 options then.
