There are at least two differences that I can think of:

1. Diversity – most schools want to create an international, diverse environment. They want a few Israelis, a few Chinese people, a few Belgians, etc. Therefore, if you apply as a Belgian and very few Belgians apply, you have a better chance than if you apply as an Israeli and many Israelis apply (and vice versa).

2. Placement statistics – the school wants to present as strong placement statistics as possible. As an EU citizen, you have a better chance of finding work (in the EU) right after graduation. In this regard, the school may prefer an EU citizen.

שלום שוב. הרשה לי להודות לך על התשובה המפורטת והעניינית, אולם יש לי "שאלת המשך" בנוגע לחלק הבא של תשובתך:

כדאי וראוי להחשיב את הצבא כנסיון עבודה, וכך גם מתייחסים אליו ברוב האוניברסיטאות. לפיכך, יש לך מספיק נסיון עבודה. התחושה שלי היא שהיות ואתה מדבר על אוניברסיטאות מובילות תצטרך לחזק את הרקע המנהיגותי/ניהולי שלך, ומבחינה זו אולי כדאי שתצבור עוד נסיון תעסוקתי בהקשר של ניהול / מנהיגות עיסקית, ציבורית או קהילתית.

לאור העובדה שאני עובד במשרה מלאה כמהנדס, איני רואה דרך כלשהי לממש צבירת נסיון בהקשר של ניהול / מנהיגות עיסקית, ציבורית או קהילתית כהגדרתך, בוודאי שלא בשנה הקרובה, זאת מאחר ואני עוסק בתפקיד מקצועי גרידא.

1) האם עצם היותי בוגר תואר ראשון טרי לא מאפשרת לי להסתמך על נסיוני המקצועי והרקע הניהולי/פיקודי הצבאי בלבד?

אם ניהלת/פיקדת על אנשים בצבא זה יעזור. נסיונך המקצועי הוא בעל ערך גם כן, אולם לפי הבנתי אינו מחזק את הצד המנהיגותי.

2) במידה ויש לך הצעות כיצד בכל זאת לחזק את התכונות הנ"ל (בלי להחליף עבודה כמובן…) אשמח (ואודה לך מקרב לב) אם תוכל לחלוק אותן עימי.

Michael Makov is the "school moderator" for UVA with the Israeli International MBA Association. I do not know him. He will probably be willing to help. His email is color=#[email protected]

Can you tell me anything about the rep. UVA got in Israel?( חייבים לחזור מתישהוא )

As far as I know, the brand recognition of UVA among Israeli employers is relatively low, since UVA has not traditionally been a popular schools among Israelis. However, I do think that the school is becoming more popular among Israelis and, accordingly, it's reputation in Israel is on the rising.

Excellent school, well established, strong in general management, historically – top 15 in the US. Fewer Israelis apply to UVA due to the location. Therefore, a good opportunity for Israelis who are happy about living in Charoltteseville, VA.

שלום גילאם. סיימתי זה עתה תואר ראשון בהנדסת מחשבים מאונ' תא עם ממוצע ~84. עבדתי במשך כשנה וחצי כסוטדנט בחברת היי טק גדולה ולאחר מכן (ומאז) כמהנדס בחברת מוליכים למחצה מובילה. אני שוקל להגיש מועמדות לתוכניות המובילות בארה"ב לספטמבר 2004.

1) האם יש לי מספיק נסיון תעסוקתי (עד אז תתווסף לי עוד כשנה כמהנדס) על מנת לעמוד בדרישות? האם כדאי להחשיב גם את הצבא כנסיון (שירתתי 4 שנים בח"א חלקן כפרח טייס והיתר במודיעין ח"א)?

כדאי וראוי להחשיב את הצבא כנסיון עבודה, וכך גם מתייחסים אליו ברוב האוניברסיטאות. לפיכך, יש לך מספיק נסיון עבודה. התחושה שלי היא שהיות ואתה מדבר על אוניברסיטאות מובילות תצטרך לחזק את הרקע המנהיגותי/ניהולי שלך, ומבחינה זו אולי כדאי שתצבור עוד נסיון תעסוקתי בהקשר של ניהול / מנהיגות עיסקית, ציבורית או קהילתית.

לא. אבל – מומלץ שתתחיל מיידית להתקדם בתהליך. למשל, אם אתה פונה לוורטון, החיבורים שלהם כבר פורסמו ומומלץ שתתחיל לעבוד עליהם.חיבורים טובים "מתבשלים" לאורך זמן.

3) האם ישנם מקומות/גופים/אנשים אשר נותנים שירות ייעוץ מועיל לתהליך הגשת הבקשה?

Omri and awand,

My answer to sivbi was based on a few factors:

a. Chances – after seeing who gets into which schools over the past six years.

b. The general management focus of sivbi.

c. An assumption that a laser beam approach is more effective than a shotgun approach, and that applying to places like Harvard and Stanford may reduce his chances of getting into the other schools I have mentioned due to spreading his energy/focus too thin. Again, this is based on my experience over these past six years. There is no "right" answer to this – I definitely may be wrong. In any case, if a person has a lifedream of applying to certain schools, this is definitely a good reason to apply to these schools!

גילם, לפי דעתך מספר הישראלים שניגשים השנה יהיה נמוך או גבוהה מהשנה הקודמת?

כל תחזית תהיה בגדר ניחוש. אני שומע מועדות קבלה שונות (מעודכן עד לפני כשלושה שבועות) שבכל שנה פונים אליהם יותר ישראלים ושהם מצפים לגידול גם השנה. מנגד, המיתון גורם לכך שאנשים מפחדים מההשקעה בתואר ומהאפשרויות אחריו.

ההערכה שלי (והיא בגדר ניחוש) היא שאחרי שנת השיא שעברה יפנו השנה פחות ישראלים בגלל הסיבה השניה, מה שאומר שזאת אולי שנה טובה לפנות – מבחינת הסיכויים.

Your stats are impressive!

Given your focus on general management, and your interest in working abroad after school, you may want to choose four of the following six based on location/acquaintance preference: Cornell, Virginia, Michigan, Duke, Dartmouth, MIT (will be harder for you to differentiate yourself there). Kellogg will be a stretch, but may worth trying.

To mbabin:

LBS – excellent school, considered #2 in Europe by most rankings, strong in finance. If you plan to seek a finance position in London, LBS is up to par with the leading American schools, if not stronger. There is a large – 10K pounds – scholarship there for one Israeli each year. From what I hear, the Israeli guys there are happy and feel very connected to the school.

Rotterdam – funny that you're asking. Someone just aked me this question a few days ago. Top 10 program in Europe. Beyond the leading three, the picture is (still) pretty blurry in Europe. A relatively new school (which means a relatively small alumni network), grew pretty rapidly, especially over the past few years (now mid size in Europe). Good facilities, fully English-language based (now), relatively long program in European terms – fifteen months – due to the internship period, which I see as an advantage of RSM relative to other European programs. Very international (well, The Netherlands is a small country) – they appreciate this element in applications. They are graudally doing better on the teaching side and need to do better on the career development and placement side. Friendly, colegial, laid back evnironment. In my opinion, they could have used more focused professional differentiation. If I were to craft their positioning statement, I would put more focus on IT as their differentiator.

Places like IESE, Rotterdam, Carnfield, HEC, Oxford (Said) and Cambridge (Judge) should be within your reach. London Business School will be a stretch, I would recommend passing over it in order to focus on your more realistic options. INSEAD is probably out of your ballpark.
