With new security patch at work I can use my laptop to access my mbachances account again…

To be more accurate – HSMP is history. You become a “high skilled worker” (aka Tier 1), similar programme and rules…. Alternatively you can be on stay on a work permit (similar “perks”, but employer has to endorse you). It is possible to move from one to the other. Finally, there is a 12 months international student permit that allows you to stay and work/look for a job even if failed in the Tier 1 application. In all 3 options the partner becomes your “dependent” and can work or study.

To contribute from my humble experience:

BCG London is starting the full time campus recruitment "business as usual". Naturally, campus competition will be more fierce than in previous years. Many career-changers-to-banking are changing strategy to consulting. Sign-up to consulting presentations in schools (LBS and others) are higher compared to the last few years.

    My "analysis":
The impact on the consulting industry is two fold: On one hand these mergers are usually followed by lucrative post merger consulting projects. On the other, companies rethink their consulting budgets. A 2001 veteran told me that this is the reason consulting firms lag 6-12 months behind the industry (in terms of feeling the downturns in top and bottom line). Naturally if we are talking on total meltdown, everyone's in big trouble…

With regards to the analogy made earlier to the .com crush. Making this analogy can be dangerous. Indeed, on a superficial level there are similar symptoms (stock market has gone down…). However, FS is much more pervasive and impacts every layer of business and society (while .com was more isolated).

To conclude – Would I want to graduate from an MBA in the next 18 months? Not sure, at least not if I am changing country, industry and function (the case for most Israelis). I would be feel more comfortable looking for my internship in 12-18 months (e.g. wait a year before starting a 12-15 months programme, or go for a 21 months programme. (Unless I had a CV that realllllly stands out)

Hi Amit, Sorry for the long post – I hope you'll find it useful.

I am sure you know this: The ranking should be taken with a pinch of salt.

It serves as good "PR ammunition" for admission teams (and for students) but not much more. For example the average ROI from school X is 99.999% not relevant for you – This is the nature of averages. Especially in programmes that are as diverse as international MBAs. You should understand your chances of nailing the job you are aftar and understand how much does that job pays.

A good illustration can be McKinsey (or Goldman or similar firms) in London: They will pay a Harvard Grad and an Oxford grad the same MBA base salary (Alumni – correct me if I am wrong). Variations will be small.

    Regardsing the ranking:

If you want to learn about the ranking understand the weight they give the attributes, it can explain many of the anomalities (rather than surprises) in the different rankings. I call them anomalities, as in my opinion, it does not matter what a report will tell you some schools are better than others: e.g. Stanford does not play with UNC in the same leage and London Business School does not play with Erasmus in the same league (I tried to choose schools with small Israeli representation to avoid offending anyone – I am sure UNC and Erasmus are great schools).

At the end of the day an applicant should find the school which is best for him (and will take him) rather than one that is placed higher on this or that ranking…

As an example here are the details of the FT MBA2007 ranking method:

The Financial Times MBA 2007 rankings TABLE KEY (weights are in brackets)

Audit year KPMG reported on the results of obtaining evidence and applying specified audit procedures relating to selected data provided for the Financial Times MBA survey ranking for selected business schools.

Salary Today An average of salaries – three years after graduation – from the 2004, 2005 and 2006 surveys. The figure is in US dollars and is NOT used in the ranking.

Weighted Salary (20) The average ‘salary today’ with adjustment for salary variations between industry sectors. The figure is a weighted average of salaries three years after graduation from the 2004, 2005 and 2006 surveys and is in US dollars.

Salary percentage increase (20) The percentage increase in salary from the beginning of the MBA to three years after graduation. The figure is a weighted average of the increases from the 2004, 2005 and 2006 surveys.

Value for money (3) The value for money criterion is a short-term indicator calculated using the salary earned by alumni three years after graduation and course costs, including the opportunity cost of not working for the duration of the course.

Career progress (3) The degree to which alumni have moved up the career ladder three years after graduating. Progression is measured through changes in level of seniority and the size of company in which they are employed. The data in this field has been combined with career progress results from the MBA 2005 and MBA 2004 surveys.

Aims achieved (3) The extent to which alumni fulfilled their goals or reasons for doing an MBA. This is measured as a percentage of total returns for a school.

Placement success (2) The percentage of alumni, who graduated in 2002, that gained employment with the help of career advice. The data is presented as a rank. The figure behind the rank is a weighted average of the placement success results from MBA 2004, 2005 and 2006.

Alumni recommendation (2) Alumni of 2002 were asked to name three business schools from which they would recruit MBA graduates. The figure represents the number of votes received by each school. The data is a weighted average from the 2004, 2005 and 2006 surveys and is presented as a rank.

Employed at three months (2) The percentage of the most recent graduating class that had gained employment within three months. The figure in brackets is the percentage of the class on which the school was able to provide employment data.

Women faculty (2) Percentage of female faculty.

Women students (2) Percentage of female students.

Women board (1) Female members of the advisory board, as a percentage.

International faculty (4) The percentage of faculty whose nationality differs from their country of employment.

International students (4) The percentage of international students.

International board (2) The percentage of the board whose nationality differs from the country in which the business school is situated.

International mobility (6) A rating system that measures the degree of international mobility based on the employment movements of alumni between the time prior to their MBA and graduation and also, the time between graduation and today.

International experience (2) Weighted average of four criteria that measure international exposure during the course.

Languages (2) Number of additional languages required on completion of the MBA. Where a proportion of students require a further language due to an additional diploma, that figure is included in the calculations but not presented in the final table.

Faculty with doctorates (5) Percentage of faculty with a doctoral degree.

FT Doctoral rating (5) Number of doctoral graduates from the last three academic years with additional weighting for those graduates taking up a faculty position at one of the top 50 schools in MBA 2005.

FT Research rating (10) A rating of faculty publications in 40 international academic and practitioner journals. Points are accrued by the business school at which the author is presently employed. Adjustment is made for faculty size.

    Mabruc.

I do not know much about HSBC loan. Did not go that path either. I know however that many do take that loan, so if I learnt anything about 'free markets' – is that this is a good sign that there is something worth while there …

My common sense tells me – Planning to work in Europe (UK) – take a loan in GBP. Planning to work in Israel – take the loan in Shekel. Unless there is some exceptional offer..

About costs- look at it this way – you should be able to make money in summer and if you want to – there are always projects around to do in parallel during the 2nd year.

About scholarships – you snooze you lose… not much for 4th rounders… Google "scholarship jewish uk"- You are bound to find a few hundred GBP.

Anywaym the MBA is an investment in yourself. If you are up to it – join us !

    Shir,

I did not investigate the loans industry, but I know that most MBA students in London Business School take the MBA loans offered by HSBC. I heard it is not as attractive as loand in the US, but again, I have not researched at all.

About comparing a 1yr to a 2yr program – I would say the key difference is the internship and the ability to do a career change. I posted in the past my view of copmating London and INSEAD – it can give you some clue.

    Good luck with the trip

London statistics also looks good. These are stats for the class that graduated in 2006 (the class graduating next week looks promising as well, but stats are not out there)
Most important to Israelis (career changers and/or staying in EU to pay debts):
    – Only 9% (!!!) returned to previous employer
    – Career changing: Far higher than other schools (as I am aware of):
    – 69% of those went into consulting had no prior experience
    – 65% of those who went into finance had no prior experience
    – A lower 28% in industry – which reflects the trend of interest in industry
    Other main stats:
    – 96% (out of 98% who answered survey) accepted an offer (2nd (!!) highest in the world if I am not mistaken)
    – Sector split: 33% industry, 25% consulting and 42% finance

    For more details:
    face=Times New Roman color=#800080 http://www.london.edu/assets/documents/PDF/CS_MBA_2006_Employment_Report_030107.pdf

In terms on internship – stats for my class are not out yet. Last year’s (MBA2007) practically anyone that wanted an internship (all but 4 students) got one (‘rumour’ says that one student could not find a paid internship so took a pro-bono work in African and landed full time job in McKinsey job, after turning down offers from Bain and BCG…)

1st year is over. Had a great one. Anyone interested in more details – contact me in the London Business School Thread

Last week was one of the best social event in Europe's MBA scene. The MBAT – an MBA Olympic tournement – over 2000 students from 15 schools.

Naturally, London Business School won the overall tounament (2nd time in a row!).

Follow the link for some pictures from the event, including our famous big red bus that crossed the English Chanal loaded with beer and returned with nothing but a big trophy :-)

    Hi Jhammer,

Could be explained in many 'levels'. Main line is – averages are of little value… Consider an average that is most relevant for your plans.

I do not know which of the potential reasons are correct, but here goes:

    1. Your definition of winning is 'not clear'. Total compensation in Oxford is 74, in LBS is close to 90 (if you sum salary and bonuses).

    2. Most Oxford students work in the UK while in London the number is smaller. The right comparison would be to compare to the LBS alums in UK region.

    3. A one year programs may attract less career changers – you should not compare yourself to those returning to their old job (not only in salary).

    4. Most top firms have a 'brand premium' i.e. you get lower salary because you get a strong brand (e.g. McKinsey can offer less than Monitor Consulting as you will take their offer anyway). I am quite certain that GS/MS/McK/BCG etc' London office would give an Oxford grad the same offer it would give a London Grad and a Harvard Grad.

I can give you many other potential explanations (e.g. MIT guys are paid in an eroding currency named $…) but the bottom line is, again, beware of averages…

    Final comment:

Oxford maybe not that highly rated in Europe but has a good name and great alumni networks in the UK (firgun never hurt anyone).

    Small correction,

MBA2008s' term starts on 13/4. I think coming on the 20th can work.

I will be there and should be able to meet you.

Furthermore, if you are a good football player we may need you there on sunday – there is a 5-a-side worldcup and the Israeli team's bench is a little short. Bring your נעלי פקקים :-)

    My 2 cents:

A generic comparison is a very hard thing to do – it really depends on the situation (Post MBA goals, past experience, marital status and so forth).

Alumni – INSEAD has more Israeli alums. However, for those looking to work in London, studying here for two years, a tube-ride away to the network is priceless. I guess this feature is shared mostly with Columbia/NYU.

Location – it is more than the City vs. the forest. The ability to communicate with your future recruiters near their offices is again priceless (same as above). Other than that – London is fun, and Pricy…

Career Goal – I think this is really the 'crucks' of the decision'. This is where everyone must make their calculations right.

Top MBAs open similar doors, but it opens different doors for different people. One big London plus is the 2-year program. One must not undervalue having a 2-year program. Its an opportunity for ‘career-changers’ to make their CV ‘readable’ (e.g. working for s top law-firm or a prominent start-up is ‘interesting’ when you apply to school, but is ‘meaningless’ to the HR rep that reads an anonymous CV). Furthermore – There is literally a 2nd chance at nailing your favourite job.

Intensity – I assume London is easier. People may value it differently.

    Academic perspective – Can’t say

This is my (biased?) view. Good luck to everyone with their choices!

London Business School discourages it (and if I am not mistaken the next student conduct guidelines will ban it).

    Logic behind it:
    – It quickly turns into checking emails and surfing the web, hurting class participation.
    – We get good hands-outs so no need for a lot of writing.
    – Finally, our professors said they do not like it.

As someone who thought he had lost the skill of writing with pen and paper I can tell you it is not so bad… I would not choose a school school based on this :-)

    Hi J,

First of all I would like to to encourage you. People do come out of the waitlist. Two of my best friends this year got a last minute positive answer from the school.

About the support emails and all that – Admission is not rocket science and adcom officers are not waiting all they long "to be pissed off" by applicants. As long as you have tastefull things to say, don't hold your piece.

    In your place I would:

    1. Contact my interviewer. He should be familiar enough with your application to give you a hint on what was missing.

    2. If you have what is missing but did not demonstrate it well enough in your application – find a way to get support emphasizing that point.

    3. If you know someone that has done any kind of studying in the school (e.g.exchange students, executive trainings etc') contact them. School community is more than full time MBAs. The 'vote' of a school alumnus can always help.

    4. Whatever you do – don't write LBS in your support emails – the school prefers to be called London Business School :-)

    Good luck!

    Hi id,

I am not sure about dorms for couples. The students who took dorms (as far as I know) are single.

About work for spouses – School gave the partners several workshops about London job search culture (how to write your CV, how to write a cover letter). Other than that, Career services are extremely busy (especially at the first part of the year, which is when partners are looking for a job) so they will not be able to give much help. Alumni and students however are very helpful.

About ways to cut cost – your major cost is rent – some ways to cut it:

    1. Live a bit further from school – most brits do. In trendy areas like Islington you could save 10-15% of the rent compared to rent just outside school (at a cost of a 30 minutes tube ride).

    2. Rent with flatmates. Surprisingly popular concept – couples rent a flat with flatmates (e.g. a couple + two singles, or 2 couples etc'). Many foreign couples do it but I have not heard of Israeli's that have done so)

Another significant cost is enjoying the city. It is hard to cut these costs as this is a major part of the fun, however with the experience you get to know cheaper ways to go to shows, concerts etc'.

Finally – about the conclusion you are a guy – I assumed so, as the majority in this site are guys :-) We would love to have more ladies from Israel in School :-)

    Good luck.

    Hi id

good luck with your application – when are you planning to do so?

About life in London – it is fun, and indeed expensive. There are ways to save some expenses, but the main thing is to come prepared – mentally and financially :-). Some financial advantages of London – if you are married your wife will automatically get a work permit.

About recruiting – the answer is – obviously yes. There are all there.

My plans are not closed yet… however it is most likely not going to be in financeI and I am not familiar with "Equity research"

    Hope I helped.

Hi Udi, thanks for your answer.

I am not trying to win any point (OK, just one or two, but it was hard to resist ;-) ). My interest is genuine – taking forward on what you wrote, the 'market research' does not stop once you've submitted your application.

I was interested whether there was a new or recent trend. As much as I enjoy the friendly competition between the schools, as far as I know Israeli's in both London Business School and Insead alumni are in a the same (or similar) boat. Anyway, your take on things is that we are at 'business as usual'. Cool.

Cheers, and good luck in HP!

    Hi Limor,

I studied in TAU and starting my MBA with LBS. The process was simpler than what I expected. I went to the student secretery in TAU, showed her the 'official' LBS grade transcript request form.

She charged me something like 40 shekel, and gave me 3 copies of the transcript in english, and added the letter saying what is my position within the class and all the other stuff London asked for. She showed me all of it (altough London asked them to make it discrete) and than sealed it. It took them 2-3 days and someone (my mom…) went to collect it for me, they did not care.

Applying to the school is not easy (altough it is not rocket science) but this part was the easiest (I was also scared of the Israeli buearocracy… but it went OK…).

what do you mean you just saw this feature? I thought you are the "chairman" of this site/forum :-) (I did the same thing and I am now a fan of LPOW ;-) )

Anyway if you don't manage it, then I am looking for the manager:

I am not sure how to add another thread to this forum, but I think this good discussion about post MBA career (like we had just now) deserves a new thread. I think we all make many assumptions about post-MBA life, and I think getting some more answers from alumni would help us set the expectations right.

The forum focuses mainly about strategy to get accepted to an MBA, but we all know that reality is a little different that what we write in the application essays.

Like all of us, during my research I heard some "first hand" info from "multinational corps". I'll share with you an anecdote:

A branch of one global corporation in Israel compared TAU MBA's vs ivy league MBA's (with a relatively small sample…). They did not find a significant difference in the performance (if any), but did find a difference in the demands (the ivy guys expected to be promoted faster and wanted more money…).

I guess that is a mere anecdote and not a general truth (I want to believe that as I am starting my MBA in London Business School in 2 months), but what it proves once again that an ivy league MBA is not a "ticket to success" but just another good move…

Hi, I am refreshing this call for a meeting of London Business School prospect students of sep 2006 (MBA2008).

As far as I know there are 3 (including myself) that accepted the offer (or 99% in) and I think there are 2 more that got an offer.

I suggest we meet sometime in mid June to get to know one another and discuss the pre-arrival arrangements. We may be able to save some time and money doing so (and perhaps even have some fun).

I am missing the contacts of two of you. If you do not want to share them over the forum, feel free to email me at:

Hello London Business School prospect students of sep 2006 (MBA2008 and MIF2007).

As far as I know there are 4 more MBA candidates (other than me) and 1 MIF, and at least one of us is going to the admit weekend in London this weekend (not me…)

I suggest we meet sometime in May/June to get to know one another and discuss the pre-arrival arrangements. We may be able to save some time and money doing so and perhaps even have some fun.

I have the contacts info of two of you, but others are still missing. If you do not want to share them over the forum, feel free to email me at:

    Hi,

I am not Gilam, but can I help from the recent applicant perspective.

The effort involved in the essays and application is much larger compared to fixing the GMAT. I assume that with your background you will stay in the area 50Q and with a little practice (I assume mainly in SC) you can improve to 3nV high 30 will give you a 700 score.

Application however can always be made better – reviewing, asking people whose opinion matters etc etc.

    Good luck, Gil

    Hi Oded,

You asked about my LBS process – I moved the answer to this thread, so other interested individuals will see it as well.

I'll skim the obvious, and focus on the interview

    1. I submitted the application to R2 – on the last minute (like everyone does???) – in fact I had a "puncture" with the TOEFL test, so after talking to the admission team and writing them an email with my story, they allowed me to apply without a TOEFL score, take the TOEFL, and gave them my results only way later.

Tip – I was recommended by an Alumnus of LBS, so they waived the 140 Pounds application fee (marginal when comparing to the full fee, but still nice).

    2. I was notified that I was selected to an interview the night before the deadline for answers (Looks like they do this on every deadline).

    3. Interview:
    Interview arrangements:
You will be sent an email with your designated interviewer and it will be your responsibility to schedule the interview by the deadline LBS will give you.

    Content:
The interviewer will be familiar with your application and apart from Why MBA? Why us? Why now? Expect to be asked about specific experiences e.g.:
    – examples of leadership and group dynamics related you have had from your work and life experience
    – description of your industry and its challenges ;

At the end of the interview you will be given an impromptu topic for an ad-hoc short presentation – a little similar to the argument essay in the GMAT.

    4. I got an offer in email, and a package was sent home (with some nice marketing material, and the London "timeout" magazine), and the offer was valid for 4 weeks (by than I had to pay a commitment fee).

Hope this answers your questions – let me know if you want more and I will contact you via email

    Gil

    Hi Spiderman,

I suggest u have a look at the " עברת 700 " thread. It discusses the exact question that troubles you (where/how to learn to the GMAT etc'). For example I recommeneded my school in that thread (GMAX).

    Good luck

    Hi laker.

I took the GMAT on 3/1/06 at 9AM – The first one in the west to take the GMAT in the new format :-)

I felt a minor change – there was a little more SC (which is usually the harder part of the verbal) and math was a bit harder (took me 3-4 minutes more that usual – I used to finish exams ahead of time). Nothing was major

I got 720, which is 30-40 points below the projections based on the tests I have done prior to the exam, but I understood it is quite common.

Bottom line – I wouldn't go as far as saying it is significantly harder, but I was a little bit surprised.

    Infowell,

What I read in the article is that the author talks specifically about marketing positions, and at specific niches of this position. As usual in "shallow" media – big headlines ("MBA is not worth it"), little depth…

My humble opinion… I will not change my plans :-)

    Hi,

It really depends on your availability at the time. I could have done almost all of it on my own, however, the course gave me a convenient framework + An easy access to all the resources (more expensive than buying all the books and stuff, but less legwork).

To conclude. I recommend a course to anyone that needs a framework. If your English level is rusty (i.e. little practice in last few years) I strongly recommend as it will also refresh your memory.

On the other hand, if time is on your hands, and money is "shorter" – There is nothing there you cannot learn alone.

And again, I did not check other schools – only "hear-say" but GMAX seemed the most "familiar" – flexible, small classes and friendly.

    Good luck

BTW – my name is Gil…

Gets – I moved the thread to this place myself.

You asked me about the GMAX course.

I thought the teachers were skilled, and more importantly, the school is small and hence the attitude was very personal, so I felt I could address only my weaknesses. I had very little time to study for the GMAT, and wanted to focus only on 2 topics, and GMAX was able to do so.

If you have ample time and good discipline you can do without a course. The main reason I took a course was to make sure I have some anchor (do my homework etc).

Bottom line – I am not promoting or anything, but for someone that needed only V and only parts of V to focus on GMAX was ideal + it felt "homely" (although there was a trade-off on profesionalism – some of the organization seemed a little "amateur").

London Business School also offers a shorter curriculum:

you can get an MBA in as fast as 15 months.

Still costs the same though :-)

    Hi,

I got an invitation for the London Business School interview (R2)

If anyone had an interview in Israel on R1 and is willing to share, I'd appreciate if you contact me via the forum.

    Hi Gilam,

I got a surprisingly low score on my AWA – 4; my GMAT score is 720. I understood that rechecking takes up to 3 weeks. I already applied to London Business School and waiting for R2 intereview decisions, so I will not have time to get rechecked scores delivered on time.

    My questions are:

    • Do you know how much weight does LBS gives the AWA score?
    • Assuming I get shortlisted for interview, is there a point in mentioning it in the interview? If yes, can you recommend?

    Thanks for your time.

    Gil

    Hi,

I have a strange bug in the forum. The "number of messages since my last entry" does not reset anymore. Does anyone else suffer from it or is it only my user ?

Please just one answer from one person… I don't want to spam the forum and get kicked out :-)

I reported a bug, but it was not solved yet. I am just wondering…
