I understand the burden of flying while at work to London or NY and believe me that I know that money is also an issue (especially 2 months before graduation when my loans are big 6 figures).
I think that Stern’s policy actually shows how friendly and committed the school is to create a fun environment with great students. With no offense to alumni (and I will become one soon) – alumni can not conduct interviews with the same seriousness and holistic view as the people in the admissions – the admission professionals interview and admit the whole class and definitely do a better job than a random alumni who might have been trained for this 5 years ago.

Regarding waiting lists, I know many people (including myself) who were on waiting lists to top schools until July and even August so the data from one of the previous posts is not correct.

Following the discussion of the interview location, I talked with the admissions at NYU – here is their view on the subject:

With regard to interviews, please note that our process is holistic and individualistic. We take time to read and get to know every single applicant. This is why our interviews are mostly conducted in New York. We like for our applicants to come to New York where they have a chance to visit the school, have lunch with a student and participate in a class. It gives the applicants an idea of what to expect while at Stern. Most of the interviews are conducted by trained admissions professionals. They are not blind interviews; the interviewer has thoroughly read through the application and can ask questions to supplement it.

Every year, we offer off-site interviews in Asia and Europe. We do have a number of Israeli applicants who are going to London next week to interview. Again, the interview will be conducted by an admissions professional.

We almost never grant phone interviews, unless under extreme circumstances. Getting to know the applicants is a part of the NYU Stern admissions process.

Congratulations on your interview invitations!

Stern regards the interviews very seriously and does not allow alumni to conduct the interviews in Israel. I never heard of anyone who got accepted without an interview so I do not recommend waiving an interview.

The interview signals that you have great chances to get in; I recommend doing it in NY and using this opportunity to visit school and check if it fits you. I also know several students who interviewed in London so if you want to save a bit, it is possible.

NYU is very strong in Marketing. Many people from my class worked this summer in great internships including companies like J&J, the GAP, AMEX and Apple. One of the Israelis of my class worked in marketing in the city.

However, keep in mind that many of the large recruiters of marketing positions do not sponsor international students (not like the case in finance and consulting jobs). This burden is true in all schools.

הקמפוס ב NYU מרוכז מסביב לוושינגטון סקוור בווסט וילג'. קשה לי לחשוב על מקום מדהים יותר ללמוד בו. חיי הקמפוס מלאים ומגוונים – כמות האירועים שנערכו השנה מטעם Stern ומטעם האונ' הפתיעה גם את הניו יורקרים שלומדים איתי. ללא ספק, ללמוד ב NYU רק מגדיל את האפשרויות החברתיות שלך לעומת מקומות אחרים.

לגבי הגשה זוגית דווקא יש לא מעט מקרים – ב Stern במחזור שלי יש זוג ישראלים. במחזור שמתחיל בספט' יש זוג שהבחור מתחיל MBA ואשתו מתחילה דוקטורט.

The list I gave was only a sample. Berkeley is well known in Israel, maybe a bit less than the universities in my first list.

Nate,

I am sorry to let you down. No one gets to a C suite from a resume, the way to get there is by networking. In the US and in Israel the top positions are not posted in the newspaper and the situation that you described, unfortunately, never occurs.
Now you can debate whether the experience abroad helps or not to prepare you to this later stage of the career.

After one year of my MBA at Stern I think that the experience worth every cent, even for those who need to borrow the money.
Obviously, people can succeed in their careers with an MBA from a top university or without a degree at all (Bill Gates and the like…) – The degree’s affect cannot be isolated.
I believe that for someone like you, who can afford returning to Israel immediately after the degree, the degree will be a tremendous experience and will provide means to accelerate your career – in ways that you will never get from TAU.

I think that the rankings are way overrated and that your benefit from doing an MBA in all top universities abroad, depends mostly on you. All top US universities provide opportunities to get great jobs, not only in IB & C (I am currently doing my summer in corporate America, after a major career switch from IT).

Regarding Israeli recruiters, from the research I made, the perception is derived from the university’s brand name and not the MBA program's brand. Thus, an MBA from Harvard, Stanford, Columbia, NYU, MIT and Yale will be much appreciated in Israel, more than from TAU. Other leading MBA programs are not as known in Israel – Such as Darden, Tuck and even Wharton. Of course, McKinsey and large multinational companies appreciate MBAs from all these places.

ב NYU STERN יש כמות אדירה של קורסים ב Finance שמועברים ע"י פרופ' אורחים, אשר רובם עובד ביום בבנקים הגדולים ובערב מלמד בבי"ס. אופציה אשר לא קיימת בבתי ספר אחרים.

כמו כן, לStern מגיעים מרצים בכירים רבים, בהם בוגרי בי"ס כגון אלן גרינספן.

במרחק הליכה (ובמקרה הגרוע בסאבויי) נערכים כנסים והרצאות מיוחדים עבור הסטודנטים במשרדי החברות. כל הבנקים והמוסדות הפיננסיים הגדולים מגיעים לקמפוס לאירועים של גיוס או של העשרה אקדמית לאורך כל השנה.

Guy,

Stern has great courses on entrepreneurship. I am currently taking a very interesting course on financing new ventures, which is part of the entrepreneurship and Innovation specialization.

Stern also has an annual Business Plan Competition, with 1^st prize of $150,000 seed money to finance the best idea.

Food and commodity firms (aka CPG) recruit heavily at Stern mostly for marketing and finance jobs. However, many of them do not recruit international students. (which is true for all schools)

The Summer Start Program is new at Stern (I believe that this will be the second year that it is being held). Most of the people who are offered to join are from a less traditional pre MBA background. However it is open to anyone who wants to get into B-School in a more relaxed mode.

The Summer Start Program is 6 weeks long, in which the students can take some of the core classes and reduce the first semester pressure. The participants also take part in special courses for leadership and qualitative management skills.

I did not take part in this program. However, I heard great feedback about it and the people who took it had definitely a head start academically and socially (Getting to know well a group of ~60 people instead of the entire class at once).

I wonder why you asked about weaknesses and not strengths and weaknesses
Anyway, the weaknesses are that it cost money and that you start school 6 weeks earlier (if this is a disadvantage).

My 2 cents on rankings:

Rankings should only have a small influence to your decision upon which school you apply to / enroll.

Every major business publication has a different method to rank the schools, some do it by surveys (of students, alumni and employers) some do it by digging for numbers (school stats, reported salaries).

Besides the rankings you mentioned, the Economist and Financial Times also publish rankings.

For example, the FT includes the following elements in its ranking

I strongly recommend checking your fit to the school first (career opportunities, teaching style, location, people etc) and looking at rankings later as a tie breaker.
