    Hi Assaf,

I'm just starting the process now (for Sep. 2005), and had some questions you might be able to help me with – the thing is I'm also serving in the Air Force (Major), but unlike you I have no business education or practice. Therefore, I wondered if:

    1. Chicago GSB is a good place to do a career change, due to the total freedom of choise in courses.

    2. Is it realistic considering my basic qualifications, to expect a job in VC after graduation (lets say, in Chicago).

    Hi Dudi,

Firstly, I think there should be no problems with your "lack" of business experience, since the military service is considered business experience, especially since you served there for a long time and currently holds the rank of Major. There are quite a few Full time soldiers in school (check out the armed forces group website ) it is just a matter of transforming your military experiences to the business world format of leading, manging, researching etc'

Secondly, all of the business schools are huge in career changing, hardly anyone is coming to school as X and stays in that profession, Chicago is a great place to place unbranded individuals at the most branded places. The fact that the curriculum is flexible just let you reinforce a specific field you are interested in BEFORE the interviews- for instance if you are into Investment Banking- you can take accounting, M&A accounting, Financial Statement analysis, Investments, Corporate Finance and cases in financial managment before you take marketing, operations etc'- so you WILL BE READY for you interviews.

I believe it is very difficult to find a good VC job post graduation without previous experience in the sector, the Private Equity Lab course in Chicago had helped many students getting placements in VC funds (mostly in the Midwest region)

    hope it helps

    Hi Assaf,

First – thanks for anwersing me so elaborately, your answer helped me a lot.

I know it's a problematic question, but could you tell me what are the things that are unique in Chicago, and what is the school emphasis when checking out applicants in your view.

    Dudy.

    Dudy,

From the top of my mind:

    1. The school is renowned for its varied curriculum, international student body, and superlative faculty.

    2. The LEAD Program and the new Product and Strategy Development lab enable to apply frameworks onto real-life situations.

    3. The program's flexible learning model.

    4. Top rated finance and entrepreneurship departments

    5. Business exposure resulting from the program's location in Chicago, one of the financial capitals of the World.

And most important for you, a very high recruiting percantage.

    Hope this helps.

BTW – I am an admitted student of the class of 2006 and would be happy to share more info.

Corporate recruiters rated Chicago GSB graduates hands-down favorites in the biennial Business Week rankings of MBA programs, released Oct. 7. They praised the school s capacity for shaping students thinking.

Overall, Chicago GSB was #2 in the Business Week ratings. In another recent poll by the The Economist Intelligence Unit the GSB's career services earned #1 ratings from students.

The Chicago GSB is:• First business school to have a Nobel laureate on its faculty George Stigler, 1982

    • only business school to have had six Nobel Prize winners: Stigler; Merton Miller, 1990; Ronald Coase, 1991; Gary Becker, 1992; Robert Fogel, 1993; and Myron Scholes, 1997.

Associate Director of Admissions, Mrs. Kristen Pawlowski and Chicago GSB’s Israeli students would love to invite you to attend an online Chat on Monday, Oct. 25 at 19:00

I'm going to be in the states in the end of the month (work related).

since I'll be instructing a course in Champaign Illinoi, I thought of taking the opportunity and go to see chicago university.

the problem is that I'm going to be very busy during the weekdays and I'll have free time only in the weekend… is there any point in coming during the weekend ?

what are the days/hours the university is active and when is it best to visit ?

Firstly, let us (the israelis) know when you're coming and we'll show you around.

Secondly, there are weekend classes (part of the best thing in Chicago you have total flexibility) and there are few Executive classes

Thirdly, the campus IS AMAZING and worth going to anyway

In shorts- yes it is still worth it- let us know when you're here (there are no classes during christmas and half of Dec) and we'll show you around

    BABSON

Attached is the official press release about the new scholarship for Israeli's at the Chicago GSB, please feel free to ask any questions about this or any other issue regarding the university:
New fellowship program for Israeli M.B.A. students at the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business

In an effort to help Israel’s growing economy, the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business today announced a new fellowship program for qualified applicants from Israel who will return to Israel after they receive their M.B.A. degrees.
The Dennis W. and Jane B. Carlton Israeli Fellows program will provide more than $100,000 in tuition and living expenses to each student during the two-year M.B.A. program. To qualify, students must be citizens of Israel, with preference given to veterans of the Israeli Defense Forces.
“The goal of this new program is to strengthen the Israeli economy through the education and professional development of business and government leaders,” said Edward A. Snyder, dean of Chicago GSB.
In addition to the monetary awards, students will receive mentoring and professional development by business leaders in Chicago facilitated by the Jewish United Federation, Snyder said.
Terms of the fellowship require that each student return to Israel within five years of completing the M.B.A.

The program is funded by Dennis Carlton and his wife Jane. Dennis Carlton is a professor of economics at Chicago GSB. He also is co-editor of the Journal of Law and Economics

Can anyone provide some details on the selection criteria for the attached scholarship? Poblic sector? private? government?

    Thanks!

Up to three endowed fellowships are available annually offering full tuition, annual stipend of $15,000 along with mentoring and professional development by business leaders in the Chicago area facilitated by the Jewish United Federation. The Carlton fellowships are designed to strengthen the Israeli economy through the education and professional development of business and government leaders. To be eligible, applicants must be an Israeli who will return to Israel within five years of completing the MBA. Note that in the event that the student does not return to live and work in Israel, the tuition and stipend awards convert to loans to be repaid in four equal installments in the 5th -8th year post-graduation.

All four schools are considered core schools for most top consulting firms (you can also add HBS, Stanford and MIT to that list), of course schools are stronger in their home towns (i.e. – Kellogg and Chicago are very strong with the local offices in Chicago), but I would also say that Chicago tends to be strong among the top MC firms all around and has a vast Alumni network also in SF, Boston, NYC and Dallas for sure.

I can't give you a percentage regarding how hard it is, but we have Israneli graduates who worked and are currently working in these firms, so it is manageable.

Regarding your other question, Moshe might have better insights… good luck.

    Scholarships in Chicago GSB:

The new scholarship is awarded by one of the professors at the school – Dennis Carlton (if anyone is interested in more details about him let me know. He's quite a figure).

Since it is the first year that the scholarship is offered, I can't really comment on the selection criteria. However, a full-sponsorship of 3 full-time students by an organization/person they are not employed by is very rare (compare it to other schools and see).

As professor Carlton's intent is to strengthen the Israeli economy, I would guess that someone who comes or intends to return someday to the public sector might have some advantage (I used these vague terms on purpose).

    Moshe.

    Regarding the interview:

    1. who should I interview with?

    2. What should I wear? A suit (business U.S.) or not (Business Israel)?

    3. what should I expect from this experience? (How long? what questions? etc.)

    woow- a lot of questions,

Let's try to answer them using my logic and perpspective:

    1) This is a weird question- I don't really know you, and I think that all of the interviewers are good (and this is something you can't expect me to write my personal perspectives in here :-))- do some Due diligence before choosing and I don't think it really matters.

    2) I would wear business casual as a base in Israel (unless for an interviewer from abroad) BUT would ask the interviewer in the mail

    3) From my far experience I would think it will be ~ 30-45 min, quite casual the regualr 3 why? and them some more in depth experiences questions, it is more a discussion to understand the motives and the calibre of the applicant

hope it helps in any way

    good luck

There are rumors regarding the full-scholarships that the Chicago GSB is offering to Israeli students and we'd like to make sense of it all.

Unlike what you may have heard from people who are less than fully familiar with the situation, NONE of the scholarships have been offered to ANYONE yet.

Moreover, candidates will not even be considered for it before the full list of Israeli admits from BOTH first and second rounds is completed.

So, if the scholarship is what you base you decision on (which it shouldn't be), then keep in mind that there is still plenty of time before this issue will be resolved.

Any one of us will be more than happy to answer any questions on this subject (and any other thing you want to know).

    Moshe Gur and Savyon.

The Dennis W. and Jane B. Carlton Fellowship
