If you choose January, you will have exactly the same opportunities minus the opportunity to do an internship. The students who you will go to class with in your first two semesters are January students. These are your core classes. You will be able to take an elective in your first year and will interact with September students here. Then in your last two semesters, which are all electives you will share your classes with both January and September students. All clubs and organizations are shared by both September and January as well as the opportunities for school leadership.

Essay #4 is designed to give us some insight into who you are as a person. We want to try and get to know you as it is important for us. Applications are pieces of paper and we are trying to breath some real life into who you are.

I'm not sure I will be able to get to answer all of your questions posted. So please go to our Financial Aid web site for full details on our Fellowships as well as our loan program.
As to the deadlines for international applicants there are two. The first deadline is if you are applying for Fellowship which is merit based. This has to do with an evaluation of your academics including your GMAT and your TOEFL. It also will include your work success as well as your well roundedness.
The final deadline for international applicants is March 1st.

Thanks for the support.
The RL status is what we call a LATR status. When people apply ED and we feel they are very strong applicants they are admitted. Remember we are looking at a much smaller pool of applicants at this time so the application needs to be a strong one. When an applicant is a good applicant but not as strong in all areas we will place them in the LATER pool to see how they look within this larger group. Sometimes there are noticeable weaknesses which we hope they will address during this time. We tell them when they will be reassessed and will give them an opportunity to strengthen if they choose.

Since I do not have the holiday schedule in front of me, I would suggest that you go to our web site to see when classes are in session. Prior to the December holidays, students are taking exams. Then they will leave for the winter break. On January 5th, Orientation for the entering January Class begins. These are not good times to visit. Classes will resume in mid-January. You should allow for a week or so before visiting after classes resume. Otherwise you will not be witness to normal classroom interaction.

Let me assure you that there is no school policy regarding countries. Each year we receive applications from people all over the world. They are read in the order that they have been received. At any time during their review they may be invited to interview. The determination of whether to do an interview is dependent on what it is we are looking for which is not clear in the application. Sometimes we ask for the interview because we may feel that you do not know enough about us…this then gives you the opportunity to learn more about Columbia Business School. There are times when we admit without an interview.
When comparing numbers of students at each school, take a look first at the size of the class to understand the actual number represented.

What do you mean by RL status?

This is very difficult to answer in this format. What makes Columbia unique has to do with the quality of the program and how we are able to capitalize on the wealth of resources in this city. We are able to utilize people who have reached the pinnacle of their careers to share with our students what they did to have reached their goals. These professionals are guests in the classes, they are often used as practitioner faculty who will teach the practice alongside of the theory being taught by our faculty. This happens daily at Columbia because of who we are and where we are.
בתגובה ל: Columbia MBA Chat #1186I'm not sure the last answer went through….ED applicants can expect their decisions within 4-10 weeks after a completed application has been received.

Early Decision applicants can expect to receive their decisions within 4-10 weeks of a completed application.
בתגובה ל: Columbia MBA Chat #1181Yes, the January students have all of the same benefits, same experiences that the September students will have. The only difference is that the January Term is designed for those who do not need or want an internship. Their resumes and work experience as well as their network with serve in place of the internship. However, during recruitment they will go to presentations and sign up for interviews within the Career Service Office. They also have the same advantages in using our amazing Alumni Data Base which includes our graduates from around the world.

If you are asking about placement, these statistics are not posted until after graduation. What we are seeing currently indicates a slight improvement in the economy. Specifically we are seeing more internships available and our students being hired into these internships. This is a very good sign. Over the last year when the economy was so slow, the good news was that our students were being hired but it was taking a little longer than what we had seen in the past. Being in New York has been an enormous advantage for our students to maintain constant contact with employers.

Given that we receive far more applications than we can accept, the actual decrease will have little effect on whether it helps or hurts. The important thing for us is knowing that the quality of the pool continues to strengthen and has over the years. I do not expect that this will change.
בתגובה ל: Columbia MBA Chat #1175The professional side of you comes through the application through your resume, as well as through your recommendations. The essays give you an opportunity to talk about both personal as well as professional experience. It will depend on what you choose to write. There is no right answer here…it is really just as important to choose your topic wisely as it is to answer the questions being asked.

Although it is still early to predict how the applications will end up, most all schools are down in their numbers including Columbia.
בתגובה ל: Columbia MBA Chat #1166I would only advise them to do their homework about the school and do the very best job possible on their applications. Do everything you can to pressent the strongest application possible.
בתגובה ל: Columbia MBA Chat #1165It's my pleasure to be here today and thank you for inviting us to join you.

My advise is to send two if two are what is being ask for…however, if you feel that the third one will add something special, something that the other two will not….then by all means include it.
בתגובה ל: Columbia MBA Chat #505Age should not be factor as to whether you apply to an MBA Program or not. Regardless of age an applicant needs to think about why they want a MBA, what will the program offer me, and what are my goals. Will getting a MBA fulfill these goals and are they realistic.

Each student must decide what courses would be of benefit for them during the MBA studies. Each will come to Columbia with a wide variety of backgrounds and educational experiences. For someone who is transitioning into Marketing from another background they would probably find it beneficial to concentrate in marketing. These should want as strong a background in their new area of interest as possible. For those coming with marketing in their backgroun they may chose several combined concentrations or they may choose to take a varied course of study. It will depend. We provide a wonderful suport with our Office of Student Academic Affairs staff as well as your student Mentors/

For those who are asked to contact us for feedbac, the letter is their deny letter. They should receive this letter within 6-12 weeks after their application is completed.

We do not have a minimum score for your GMAT. We admit people within a wide range. Last year's range 550-800 with the mid point being 680-760. So you can see it isn't the end all that most think.

The January Program is designed for those people who are not changing careers, who have their own business and are returning, or for those who have a strong network and will not or want an internship to help them get in the door.
Therefore it is a more self selective group of applicants then what we find in the September pool. There are indeed fewer applicants but also fewer spots of January. The January Class is usually about 185 students.
בתגובה ל: Columbia MBA Chat #496In reply to mikik from July 22 2003Yes, we do interview in Israek as well as all over the world. Our interviews are conducted by our alumni as close to where you live as possible.

Yes, we have and do admit college seniors. However, I think if you are one of these who is thinking of applying there are things you should ask yourself firts. Do I have leadership experience, do I have some business experience; either through an internship or family business or my own business that I started? Are my grades at the top of the class and do I have some focus as to where I am headed? If you are able to answer these questions then by all means, we welcome your application.

We do not provide feedback as a general rule. However there are applicants that we denie who we are very interested in reapplying. These applicants will be given letters asking them to contact us. Also, on a very limited basis we will for a short time only provide an opportunity for feedback. If we do grant this feedback it is with the full understanding that the applicant is intending on reapplying to Columbia Business School.

Fit is very difficult to describe using this type of forum. However I will give a try. We are looking for someone who will thrive in this type of hetergenic environment…someone who can take advantage of the many choices and opportunities available at Columbia, located in New York. It is a fast paced, vibrant environment…. the applicant needs to want to be in this type of environment. Also, what will he/she offer us as well as what we can offer them. This requires a great deal of research….

Yes, you may use last year's application essays if you have already started them. If you are now begining we would prefer you to use the new ones.
בתגובה ל: Columbia MBA Chat #486In reply to mikik from July 22 2003
Yes, we do want applications to be on line. If however this is not possible you may download the application and mail it in to us. We will no long provide printed applications but will take those mailed to us.
בתגובה ל: Columbia MBA Chat #485We view reapplicants very well. Remember we admit between 10-13% only of our applicants. Therefore many wonderful, well qualified we are unable to take. So when they reapply we know they are interested in attending Columbia especially if they reapply Early Decision.
I do think it important for those who reapply to take a good look at their first application and compare it to the current profile of those students who were admitted.
