כל מועמד יודע שועדות הקבלה עלולות להציץ בפרופיל הפייסבוק שלו כחלק מהערכת האפליקיישן שלו, להיעזר בו כדי ללמוד על האישיות ותחומי העניין של המועמד ולקבוע את מידת התאמתו לביה"ס, ואף לשם אימות פרטים שכתב המועמד באפליקיישן. מה שלא כולם יודעים זה שניתן לנצל את הפרופיל לטובתם ולהשתמש בו כדי לקדם את מועמדותם.
בעולם הטכנולוגי של היום המועמדים חייבים לדאוג שהנוכחות שלהם ברשת תהיה כמה שיותר מקצועית, בין אם מדובר בפייסבוק, רשתות חברתיות אחרות, בלוגים או כל אתר שמכיל מידע על המועמד. כתבה שפורסמה בביזנסוויק מביאה כמה המלצות לשימוש ברשת לטובת קידום המועמדות:1. תמונת הפרופיל חייבת להיות מקצועית, וחשוב להימנע מלהעלות תמונות "שטותיות" כדי לא לעשות רושם רע על ועדות קבלה או מעסיקים פוטנציאליים.
2. כדי לשמור על הפרטיות מומלץ לקבוע את הגדרות הפרטיות כך שכל מי שמחוץ למעגל החברתי הקרוב לא יוכל לצפות במידע אישי או תמונות אישיות.
3. המועמד יכול להשתמש בפרופיל כדי להראות שהוא ממוקד קריירה ומתעניין בתחומי לימוד מסוימים או בנושאים הקשורים לעבודתו ע"י "לייק" לעמודים שרלבנטיים לעבודה שלו. המועמד גם יכול להציג פעילויות חברתיות, התנדבות וחברות בארגונים מקצועיים ומועדונים.
4. דרך הפרופיל שלו יכול המועמד להראות מודעות גלובלית ואוריינטציה בינלאומית ע"י חיבור עם אנשים מכל העולם, טיולים וחשיפה לתרבויות מגוונות. כל אלה הן תכונות שועדות הקבלה מחפשות אצל מועמדים כדי שיעשירו את עבודת הצוות בתוכנית הלימודים.

כתבה באתר P&Q מדווחת על סקר טלפוני של קפלן שנערך ביולי-אוגוסט 2011 בקרב 265 תוכניות MBA. הסקר מצא כי 27% מועדות הקבלה ביצעו חיפוש בגוגל על מועמדים לתוכנית ה-MBA כדי ללמוד עוד עליהם, ו-22% מהם חיפשו את פרופיל המועמד ברשתות חברתיות. מבין אלה שהודו שחיפשו מועמדים ברשת, 14% אמרו כי גילו משהו שהשפיע באופן שלילי על המועמדות.
ממצאים נוספים שעלו בסקר מראים כי רוב בתי הספר למנהל עסקים מקבלים את ה-GRE כתחליף ל-GMAT, ו-66% מהם טענו כי המבחן איתו ניגש המועמד לא ישפיע על מועמדותו, בעוד 29% מבין התוכניות שמקבלות את ה-GRE אמרו כי יש עדיפות למועמדים שעשו GMAT, ו-5% אמרו שיש עדיפות למועמדים עם GRE.

הרוורד פרסמו חיבורים מעודכנים ודדליינס לתוכנית ה-MBA שמתחילה בספטמבר 2013.
בניגוד לשנים קודמות, השנה נדרשים המועמדים לכתוב רק 2 חיבורים. שינוי נוסף הוא ה- post interview reflection שיידרשו המועמדים להגיש דרך מערכת האפליקיישן תוך 24 שעות מקיום הראיון (פרטים נוספים יימסרו למועמדים שיוזמנו לראיון).

בשבוע שעבר פרסמו הרוורד את האפליקיישן ל-2013 שכלל שינוי משמעותי לעומת שנים קודמות – שני חיבורים בלבד בסך כולל של 800 מילים לעומת 4 חיבורים בסך 2000 מילים. שינוי מעניין נוסף עבור מועמדים שיוזמנו לראיון הוא חיבור נוסף על חווית הראיון (ודברים שהם מצטערים שלא אמרו בראיון…) אותו יצטרכו להגיש עד 24 שעות לאחר הראיון דרך מערכת האפליקיישן.
בנוסף, הרוורד הקדימו את הדדליין של הסיבוב הראשון ל-24.9.12, מה שכנראה מעיד על הצפי שלהם לקבל יותר אפליקיישנס השנה עקב הפחתת החיבורים.
בראיון ל- Poets & Quants סיפרה די לאופולד, ראש ועדת הקבלה בהרוורד, על הסיבות לשינוי, והסבירה כי מקורו בשיפורים שחלו בתוכנית הלימודים בהרוורד, שכיום דורשת יותר אינטרוספקציה מהסטודנטים. השינוי גם תואם את השקפתה שהחיבורים הפכו לחלק משמעותי מדי בתהליך האפליקיישן, שלא אמור להיות תחרות כתיבה. בעוד שבעבר לא התקיימו ראיונות למועמדים והחיבורים היו האמצעי היחיד להכיר את המועמד ואישיותו, הרי שכיום כל המועמדים שמתקבלים עוברים ראיון ולכן הראיון מקבל תפקיד חשוב יותר בתהליך על חשבון החיבורים. לאופולד אומרת שלדעתה המועמדים צריכים לשמוח על השינוי מאחר והוא מאפשר להם להגיד את המילה האחרונה אחרי הראיון ולכתוב דברים שלא היתה להם הזדמנות להגיד במהלכו. מצד שני, פרק הזמן הקצר שיש להם לכתוב את החיבור לאחר הראיון עלול להיות מלחיץ. אגב ראיונות, בשנה שעברה 9060 איש הגישו מועמדות להרוורד, כ-2200 מהם זומנו לראיון ו-1100 התקבלו לתוכנית (אחוז קבלה של 12%).

סקר של חברת Universum שהתפרסם באתר CNNMoney בדק מיהן החברות בהן רוצים בוגרי ה-MBA לעבוד לאחר סיום התואר. הסקר נערך בקרב 5748 סטודנטים ב-79 תוכניות MBA מובילות בארה"ב בין נובמבר 2011 למרץ 2012, והנשאלים התבקשו לבחור את 5 החברות בהן ירצו לעבוד מבין רשימה של יותר מ-175 חברות.
שלוש החברות המובילות בסקר הובילו אותו גם בשנה שעברה – גוגל הגיעה למקום הראשון זו השנה השישית ברציפות עם 25.3%, מקינזי במקום השני עם 17.7% ואפל במקום השלישי עם 16.6%.

תזכורת קצרה לגבי שני דברים שקשורים לתהליך הקבלה ושכדאי להתחיל מוקדם:
TOEFL
רוב תכניות ה- MBA דורשות מהמועמדים לעבור את מבחן ה- TOEFL קודם להגשת האפליקיישן.המקומות הזמינים למבחן ה- TOEFL בישראל הם בד"כ די מצומצמים.
בכל שנה מועמדים ישראליים מתאכזבים כאשר הם מגלים כי כל המקומות תפוסים. מועמדים אלה ניצבים אז בפני הבחירה לטוס לחו"ל על מנת לקחת את ה- TOEFL במקום אחר, או לדחות את הגשת האפליקיישן לסיבוב מאוחר יותר.

Last week NYU Stern published new essay questions for 2013 candidates. Below is Aringo's analysis and some tips (in blue) for answering Stern's questions.
First of all, Stern has very specific instructions for their application- it is important that you follow them all.
Essay 1. Professional Aspirations
(750 word maximum, double-spaced, 12-point font)
Think about the decisions you have made in your life. Answer the following:
(a) Why pursue an MBA (or joint degree) at this point in your life?
(b) What actions have you taken to determine that Stern if the best fit for your MBA experience?
(c) What do you see yourself doing professionally upon graduations?In this essay, the AdCom wants to see that you fully understand what it is that you want to do in the future (c) and why NOW is the right time. This means not two years ago, not two years from now, but NOW. This is a good opportunity to highlight the skills that you have gained thus far and the skills that you are still lacking. They basically want to see that you understand why you can't secure position (c) now. It's not just a matter of a piece of paper (the degree) – you are lacking strategic business and leadership skills. Highlight experiences which have helped you realize that you are lacking such skills. It is also important to exhibit an excellent track record, which will guarantee that you are to secure a good job post-MBA.
In the past, part (b) was its own entire essay and therefore it is very important to relate it to it. You should show that you have undertaken thorough research to learn what the Stern community is like, and that you have an idea as to how you will contribute to it. What appeals to you about the curriculum, career opportunities, clubs, professors and student life? Ideally, this means going beyond the standard web-surfing. Reach out to current students and graduates. If possible, visit the school and highlight that you sat in on a class, walked through the campus, etc. You want to be very clear that you know what Stern has to offer which will help you achieve the goals you stated in (c).
Stern is always compared to Columbia and usually loses. Your chances are significantly higher if you are able to convince Stern that they are your first choice and that you will surely matriculate if you are admitted (yield management.) The NYC advantage, cosmopolitan and diverse, works for Columbia as well, so you should do research to highlight aspects which distinguish Stern from Columbia, such as being a more intimate program, more collaborative atmosphere. NYU is definitely all about teamwork. It's very important to show initiative and that you see yourself actively contributing to the school in group settings. In this way community service is also important. Volunteering (ideally from a young age) shows that you are the kind of person that wants to contribute.
It is valuable to highlight access to top companies and executives in NY, both as contacts and as lecturers. Stern also has good relations with Wall Street financial institutions. Furthermore, there is a lot of flexibility with the curriculum – more than half of the courses are electives and students can take up to 25% of courses at other NYU grad schools.
If relevant to your career plan, it is important to note that Stern is one of the few schools with a strong name in Media & Entertainment. In addition, Stern is openly encouraging of career-switchers and offer programs to pair them with mentors from desired industry. However, if you are a career switcher, it should not come out of the blue, it should make sense and not be far-fetched.
For part (c), it's important to be realistic. We have found it to be effective to present very clear and plausible post-MBA career goal. If you can include a position and company that you see yourself working in, that is impressive. It shows that you clearly see your future path and what the MBA can afford you. Tell us why you want to assume this position and what competitive advantage you will have in recruiting for that position.
Essay 2. Your Two Paths
The mission of the Stern School of Business is to develop people and ideas that transform the challenges of the 21st century into opportunities to create value for business and society. Given today’s ever-changing global landscape, Stern seeks and develops leaders who thrive in ambiguity, embrace a broad perspective and think creatively about the range of ways they can have impact.
(a) Describe two different and distinct paths you could see your career taking long term. How do you see your two paths unfolding?
(b) How do your two paths tie to the vision on NYU Stern's?
(c) What factors will most determine which path you will take?This is a new essay to Stern and potentially quite a challenging one. Stern is looking for candidates that will shape their community, who possess both intellectual and interpersonal strengths, are highly intelligent, collaborative and committed to flourishing as Stern leaders.
Creativity and sincerity is key here. Assuming you secure that post-MBA job which you discuss in Essay 1, what are the two paths that your career can take? Describe two paths that start from that post-MBA position. Make it logical. One path will probably speak to you above another, so tell us why. By linking your past experience and values, with your newly acquired MBA skills (which fit into Stern's vision), you should be able to talk about two parallel paths and reveal an understanding that each could develop depending on the choices and opportunities that arise, or you seek out, as you fulfill your post-MBA career goal.
Part (b) relates to Stern's vision of "develop[ing] people and ideas that transform the challenges of the 21st century into opportunities to create value for business and society.” Your career goal should reflect this mission, but beyond that you want to share with the committee how you envision creating value for society, beyond your career. Here is the opportunity to reveal what kind of leader you aspire to be and what kind of impact you hope to have, both on society and on individuals who will follow your example.
Part (c) requires great introspection and understanding of how you thrive. What motivates you? In evaluating your future career trajectory, you can highlight those elements/attributes that have helped you on your career path thus far: do you enjoy exceeding expectations, empowering others? This answer can reveal what values are most important to you, and ideally also show the kind of innate leadership skills you possess, thus indicating what kind of future leader you will be.
Essay 3. Personal Expression
Please describe yourself to your MBA classmates. You may use almost any method to convey your message (e.g. words, illustrations). Feel free to be creative.
The "Personal Expression" essay gets into who the applicant is outside of work. They want cool, unique, diverse people and want to understand who you are as a person. They have received crossword puzzles, works of art, sculptures etc. There is also an option to submit a written essay (500 words, again clear instructions) and such conventional essays seem to be as effective as other, more 'creative' submissions.
In this essay, you should identify the message you want to convey. Try and reveal something new about yourself. What kind of person are you? What makes you tick? Are you passionate about helping others, playing team sports? How would you spend a free day? Tell us about how you may chose to break the ice in a new setting. The idea here is to bring in hobbies, extra-curricular activities and community service that serve an accurate reflection of who you are and the values that are important to you.
[Note some applicants will choose to use the same content for the Stern 'Personal Expression' and the Chicago "PPP" – just make sure to change the name of the school!]
Essay 4. Additional Information (optional)
Please provide any additional information that you would like to bring to the attention of the Admissions Committee. This may include current or past gaps in employment, further explanation of your undergraduate record or self-reported academic transcript(s), plans to retake the GMAT, GRE and/or TOEFL or any other relevant information.
This essay is an opportunity to present explanations for any part of your application that you feel the need to expand upon. It's not a place to present excuses. If you took time off from university to travel, took care of a sick family member, fulfilled your military duties, this is the place to include it. If you are explaining low grades or testing scores, point to elements in your professional experience that can counter them. For example, if you have a low GPA, but this is due to the fact that you founded your own volunteering organization, or start-up company in your 2nd year, then say so. Or if your quantitative GMAT score is low, but you manage large budgets, then share this with the AdCom.
As per the instructions, if you are unable to submit a recommendation from your current supervisor, you must explain your reason in Essay 4. Maybe you are concerned by the threat of being fired, maybe your current manager has only been supervising your work for 5 weeks and is less qualified to discuss your performance and potential. The key here is transparency.

Wharton 2013 Essay Questions Analysis and Tips
Last week Wharton published new essay questions for 2013 candidates. Below is Aringo's analysis and some tips (in blue) for answering Wharton's questions.
The Admissions Committee is interested in getting to know you on both a professional and personal level. We encourage you to be introspective, candid, and succinct. Most importantly, we suggest you be yourself.
Yours will be one of the expected 8,500 applications to Wharton this year, so how do you get yours to stand out? First of all, follow instructions: be introspective, candid, and succinct. Get their attention by giving them a sense of who you really are. Wharton cares a lot about leadership, teamwork, intelligence, initiative, commitment to community, and intellectual curiosity. Keep those things in mind as you write all of your essays.
REQUIRED QUESTION:
How will the Wharton MBA help you achieve your professional objectives? (400 words)
There is no right answer here, but there certainly are wrong ones. A bad answer falls into one of two traps: a generic approach to “Why Wharton” and career objectives that are unclear or unrealistic or both. That means, you should do thorough research regarding the career path to your goals and how Wharton can help you get there, but it is not a place to take wild risks and get unnecessary attention, unless you have a stellar story to go along with your professional objectives, like a multi-million dollar family business that you intend to lead.
A good career plan is one that is based on your past experience and a clear understanding of how you can get there from here. You should always include the ways in which your past experiences have helped prepare you to this point, how Wharton will help you acquire what you lack in terms of knowledge or experience, and how you will progress in your career after earning your MBA. Even if you are a career changer, you should explain how your past has brought you to this point. For example, if you are a lawyer switching to business, state clearly how your legal background has given you skills and experience that you can leverage in a business career and why you need Wharton to help you get what you lack. Your ultimate goals should be ambitious and even “dreamy” because schools want grads to become rich and famous, but your path needs to be realistic. One suggestion is to find role models and emulate their career paths.
Answering “How will Wharton get you there” involves deep, personal research, beyond what you read on the school’s website. Talk to alumni, call leaders of clubs, make personal contact to get an authentic “feel” for the culture of the school. They will appreciate the effort and see that you’re serious about the school, which could help protect their yield. Relate specific features of Wharton – whether the vast course selection or special programs abroad – to your own personality, background and goals. Avoid clichיs by being personal and specific.
Only 3 years ago, Wharton allocated 750-1000 words to an essay about your goals and Why Wharton. Today, they are giving only 400 words, which is why this essay must be complemented by either Essay 1 or 2 below …
RESPOND TO 2 OF THE FOLLOWING 3 QUESTIONS:
1. Select a Wharton MBA course, co-curricular opportunity or extra-curricular engagement that you are interested in. Tell us why you chose this activity and how it connects to your interests. (500 words)
Our advice here is to complement the first essay with either this or the next essay, but probably not with both. In both essays, you need to show what your interests truly are and what you hope to a) gain from the program but also, b) what you bring to the table that no one else can. Here’s an opportunity to stand out from the crowd and get the adcom people to think, “Wow, this candidate will really add something to the class.” One word of caution: don’t use this as a catch-all for lots of clubs and courses. Since ask for one, and you should focus on one. If you are very clever, you can choose one that has several facets.
Standing out from the crowd here is probably harder to accomplish if you choose a course (although it’s possible), but there are plenty of opportunities to choose a co-curricular opportunity or extra-curricular engagement that can demonstrate your understand of the school and your commitment to becoming an important contributing member of the Wharton community. You can also use this essay as an opportunity to show your past track record of engagement with organizations or schools, and how you will continue that commitment at Wharton. Our suggestion is to worry less about choosing the “right” course, opportunity, or engagement, and focus on choosing the one that will show the most about you, your background and your potential contribution.
2. Imagine your work obligations for the afternoon were cancelled and you found yourself "work free" for three hours, what would you do? (500 words)
Advice here is basically the same as for Option 1 above. The main difference is that Option 1 is a safer option, and we advise tackling this question only if you have a truly spectacular answer. First, it has to be really believable. You can’t say, for example, that you would run to the nearest inner city school and work with the children if you have never volunteered with school children before. A spectacular answer would provide the adcom with a little window into who you really are, something super cool about you that they might not otherwise know. Basically, if you have a great answer for this, you’ll know it. If you don’t, you’ll probably know that, too, and we don’t advise manufacturing an answer, because the reader is likely to see through it.
3. "Knowledge for Action draws upon the great qualities that have always been evident at Wharton: rigorous research, dynamic thinking, and thoughtful leadership." – Thomas S. Robertson, Dean, The Wharton School
Tell us about a time when you put knowledge into action. (500 words)
Finally, an achievement story. Hurray! We strongly recommend answering this one, and the story can be from either a personal or professional context. The most common mistake in an essay like this is listing too many facts and not including enough of the process and introspection and reflection that Wharton wants to hear. Wharton loves candidates with intellectual curiosity, and this is an interesting context to show that off. Choose a big accomplishment and dive deep into it – and make sure this does not read like a recycled, generic achievement story. Show how your action was the natural outgrowth of the knowledge and experience you had acquired previously. Show how you dealt with the challenges arising when practice diverged from theory or when you didn’t do something as well as you could have or something didn’t turn out as you expected. Show how you were rigorous and dynamic and thoughtful (but don’t tell them outright because that’s not good form).
While an essay like this is ideally about something objectively impressive (you dealt with millions of dollars or led dozens of people or convinced upper management to change accepted processes, leading to remarkable results …), you can still impress the reader even if you did not found your own NPO to save political refugees. You need to highlight not only what you did but how you did it, how you handled obstacles along the way, what you thought and felt, and most of all, your potential for thoughtful, effective big-time leadership down the road.
ADDITIONAL QUESTION FOR REAPPLICANTS:
All reapplicants to Wharton are required to complete the Optional Essay. Please use this space to explain how you have reflected on the previous decision on your application and to discuss any updates to your candidacy (e.g., changes in your professional life, additional coursework, extracurricular/volunteer engagements). You may also use this section to address any extenuating circumstances. (250 words)
Do not reiterate what they already know about you. Use this very small space to add value to your application by telling them something new that could impact your chances for admission.
OPTIONAL SECTION FOR ALL APPLICANTS:
If you feel there are extenuating circumstances of which the Committee should be aware, please explain them here (e.g., unexplained gaps in work experience, choice of recommenders, or questionable academic performance, significant weaknesses in your application). (250 words)
Unlike other schools that provide this space for just about anything, Wharton is explicit about using is only to explain “extenuating circumstances.” Don’t ignore those instructions and shove in, say, another accomplishment, as this is likely to annoy the reader. If you have any weaknesses, you can address them here but only if you have a good explanation, as anything that suggests an excuse is likely to backfire on you. For example, you can include a learning disability or the fact that you worked full-time throughout your degree as a reason for questionable academic performance, but you should not write anything about pursuing a difficult major as a reason for poor academic achievement, as there are certain to be those among your competition who excelled in the same major.

1. The "Team Fuqua" spirit and community is one of the things that sets The Duke MBA experience apart, and it is a concept that extends beyond the student body to include faculty, staff, and administration. When a new person joins the Admissions team, we ask that person to share with everyone in the office a list of "25 Random Things About Yourself." As an Admissions team, we already know the new hire's professional and academic background, so learning these "25 Random Things" helps us get to know someone's personality, background, special talents, and more.
In this spirit, the Admissions Committee also wants to get to know you—beyond the professional and academic achievements listed in your resume and transcript. You can share with us important life experiences, your likes/dislikes, hobbies, achievements, fun facts, or anything that helps us understand what makes you who you are. Share with us your list of "25 Random Things" about YOU.
Please present your response in list form, numbered 1 to 25. Some points may be only a few words, while others may be longer. Your complete list should not exceed 2 pages.

Short Answer Question
What is your immediate post-MBA professional goal? (200 characters maximum)
This is the 2nd year Columbia has asked this question. Your answer gives the adcom, which will be looking for consistency, context to jump into the rest of your essays, so be sure it hangs together, i.e., is well connected to the long term goals set out in Essay 1. Make your answer concise (well there’s no choice about that, given the character limit), and achievable (in a Columbia specific way if possible – does the firm where you envision yourself right after graduation recruit heavily at Columbia?).Essay 1:
A. Why are you pursuing an MBA at this point in your career, and how do plan to achieve your immediate and long term post-MBA professional goals? (Maximum 500 words)
Aringo’s interviews with Columbia adcom members have stressed the importance of candidates who demonstrate the potential for entrepreneurship, management skills, internationalism, and of course leadership, leadership and leadership. Keep that in mind while deciding which accomplishments to bring out in both your Career Essay and ’personal experience’ essay.
Part A is a standard Career Goal Essay. Be sure your long and short term goals are both specific (your plan is grounded in reality and well thought out) and somewhat grandiose (they want to continue creating an impressive alumni base and to be sure a top program will be of real benefit to you). You’ve heard it before, but the keys here are to convince them that your past experiences connect to your goals (or that your reason for changing careers is personally compelling), showcase a professional achievement in the context of describing the skills you already possess toward your goal, and let them know which skills you lack, that Columbia will provide, of course, to enable you to achieve your goal. In the course of referring to your professional accomplishments, explain convincingly why this point in your career is the natural/perfect point to pursue an MBA.
B. Please view this video, entitled Community at Columbia. Diverse, tight-knit clusters and carefully selected learning teams are defining features of the first year at Columbia Business School. Along with more than 100 student organizations and countless events each semester, the cluster system helps to create a supportive and devoted lifelong community. Describe why you are interested in becoming a part of the Columbia community. (Maximum 250 words)
Though this essay topic is new this year, Columbia has asked it in a different form in past years. “Homework” will be the key to a successful answer, persuading the adcom not only that you know all about the Columbia community, but that it is a perfect fit for your interests and experiences. That said, the best way to do that is to show them that the interests and enthusiasms you’ve displayed in your life dovetail with the organizations and activities specific to the campus community. Network with current and past students, research personal role models who are Columbia alums, mention specific professors whose work has influenced you personally or professionally, visit the campus if you can; go deeper than just referring to the clubs and events in the links embedded in the question. The goal here is to convince them that it’s Columbia, not just any top tier business school, you want.Essay 2:
Describe a personal experience and how it has influenced who you are today. This essay should have a personal rather than a professional focus. (Maximum 500 words)
This essay topic is similar to last year’s. Start by thinking about what you want to tell Columbia about who you are today. Are you a risk-taker, entrepreneur, have you lived abroad or in more than one country? Do define the person you are today in terms of attributes that will make you an asset to the Columbia community. In thinking of the personal experience that shaped you and led you to this point, describe how you thought, felt, and acted in response (make the essay about ‘process’) and make sure it expresses your uniqueness. Consider using an illustrative, moving, and/or entertaining anecdote (the adcom has a lot to read – engage the reader and make yourself stand out) as a thumbnail sketch of your personal strengths.Optional Essay

It’s been said before but we’ll say it again. If you have something to explain that will reflect creditably on you, okay; if you have excuses to make, don’t!! If your grades weren’t tops because you were working full-time to support yourself and your family, or starting a fledgling business venture, or caring for an ill family member, say so. If your grades weren’t tops because you had not yet developed a work ethic, or a professor took a dislike to you, instead of sounding self-serving, it’s much better to instead let the adcom know through your accomplishments (not in this optional space) that those grades were not an accurate representation of your abilities.

כתבה שפורסמה באתר Poets & Quants מדווחת כי כמות האפליקיישנס לבתי ספר למנהל עסקים בבריטניה ירדה ב-20% בשנה שעברה כתוצאה מהשינויים שעשתה הממשלה הבריטית במדיניות הויזות, שהפכו את תוכניות ה-MBA הבריטיות לפחות אטרקטיביות עבור סטודנטים בינ"ל. המדיניות החדשה של הממשלה שללה את הזכות של מסיימי התואר להישאר ולעבוד בבריטניה בשנתיים שלאחר התואר, ופגעה לא רק בכמות המועמדים ללימודים אלא גם בגיוסם לעבודה.
המסקנה הזו עלתה מסקר שנערך בקרב 41 בתי ספר בבריטניה, ואימתה את החשש שההגבלות החדשות של הממשלה יקשו מאוד על בוגרים שאינם מאירופה להשיג אשרת עבודה בבריטניה לאחר ה-MBA. עד היום כ-90% מהסטודנטים בתוכניות ה-MBA בבריטניה היו זרים, ואילו כעת מורגשת ירידה בכמות המועמדים מארה"ב, סין ובעיקר מהודו. הסקר גילה כי ב-62% מבתי הספר הורגשה ירידה של 15% בממוצע בכמות הסטודנטים.

לאחר שרוב בתי הספר כבר פרסמו את שאלות החיבורים בעונת האפליקיישן הנוכחית (לתוכניות שמתחילות ב-2013), בולטת במיוחד המגמה של צמצום מגבלת המילים בחיבורים והפחתת מספר החיבורים. הכל התחיל עם הרוורד שפרסמו את החיבורים שלהם כבר בחודש מאי וחתכו בחצי את מספר החיבורים הנדרשים. אחר כך גם סטנפורד ו-MIT הורידו חיבור אחד לעומת השנה שעברה, וקלוג חתכו בכמעט שליש את מגבלת המילים הכוללת בחיבורים מ-2200 בשנה שעברה ל-1525 השנה, כאשר על חיבור אחד שלהם יצטרכו המועמדים לענות ב-25 מילים בלבד!
כתבה שפורסמה ב- Poets&Quants מנסה למצוא הסברים לתופעה, ומצטטת את די לאופולד, ראש ועדת הקבלה בהרוורד, שאומרת כי לדעתה יש משקל גדול מדי לחיבורים בתהליך האפליקיישן, שאינו אמור להיות תחרות כתיבת חיבורים. מאחר וכיום, בניגוד לעבר, כל מועמד שמתקבל עובר ראיון, ההיכרות של ביה"ס עם המועמד תלויה פחות בחיבורים ויותר בראיון.
עוד קצת מספרים – בהרוורד השנה ירדה מגבלת המילים הכוללת בחיבורים מ-2000 ל-800 (משני חיבורים של 600 ושני חיבורים של 400 בשנה שעברה לשני חיבורים של 400 השנה), בסטנפורד מ-1800 ל-1600, בשיקגו מ-1350 ל-900 (במידה והמועמד בוחר לענות על השאלה השלישית במצגת ולא באמצעות חיבור כתוב), בקולומביה מ-1700 ל-1250 וב-MIT מ- 1500 מילים בשנה שעברה ל-1000 השנה.

לפני כחודשיים הוכנס חלק חדש בשם Integrated Reasoning לבחינת ה-GMAT כדי לבדוק את יכולתם של הנבחנים לעבד מידע ממקורות מרובים. חלק זה במבחן מקבל ניקוד נפרד סקאלה של 1-8 ואינו משפיע על הציונים של החלקים האחרים – מילולי, כמותי ו-AWA ואף לא על הציון הכללי. ציון ה-IR לא יופיע בציון הלא-רשמי שמקבל הנבחן מיד לאחר הנבחן, אלא רק בדוח התוצאות הרשמי.
מועמדים רבים תוהים כיצד ישפיע החלק החדש על הציון שלהם ועל סיכוייהם להתקבל. ובכן, מסתבר כי חלק מבתי הספר מצהירים בגלוי כי השינוי עדיין חדש להם ואין להם יכולת להעריך את המועמד לפי ציון החלק החדש.
לדוגמא, INSEAD אומרים כי כרגע הם לא מתחשבים בציון ה-IR וימשיכו להעריך מועמדים לפי החלק הכמותי והמילולי והציון הכולל במבחן. עם זאת, בעתיד הם מתכוונים להתייחס גם לציון ה-IR ברגע שיהיו להם מספיק נתונים להשוואה:

קודם כל, הסיבה לאלמנט החדש הוא השאיפה להכין את הסטודנטים לאוירת הלימודים בוורטון, שמתאפיינת בשיתוף פעולה ועבודת צוות. בנוסף, חלק מהמועמדים מרגישים כי האפליקיישן הכתוב מגביל את יכולתם להציג את עצמם בצורה מספקת ולהראות צדדים נוספים, ואילו הדיון הקבוצתי יאפשר להם "לצאת מהדף" ולהדגים כיצד הם חושבים, מנהיגים ומתקשרים עם אחרים.

Chicago Booth 2013 Essay Topics Analysis and Tips
You already know the importance of making every word count, but it’s even more important for Booth this year, since they’ve shaved 100 words off their career essay, and 350 words off what used to be the 2nd, leadership essay, and is now a two part 400 word essay. Women please note, Booth is actively encouraging applications from females this year!
Essay 1: What are your short- and long-term goals, and how will an MBA from Chicago Booth help you reach them? (500 words)
This advice is straight from the horse’s mouth. Aringo held a conference call with Joanne Legler, Chicago Booth's associate director of admissions, this past April. Paraphrasing her remarks, they are looking for candidates with a really good understanding of what an MBA means and a clear idea of what they will do when they get it. The essay should make it clear that the candidate understands the path from getting admitted to working after the degree. What’s most important is: reasonability of goals (understanding the difficulties that lie ahead, knowing how to overcome them, understanding the industries you are talking about), clarity, and understanding the resources you will need to get where you want to go.
A good career essay is short and sweet. They don’t want huge essays that go on and on without answering the question. This is not meant to be the most exciting essays they read. The creativity and originality is left to the other two essays. There’s no expectation for a lot of information.
Make your point as simply as possible, the more obvious the better. Explain the general thought process about how you got to this point (wanting an MBA) and what you plan to do with it. While it’s fine to have a couple of career goal options, but they don’t want someone who will try for every interview the career office offers while in school.
Unfortunately they see a lot of applications written by people who are not very familiar with the school. Booth wants candidates to learn as much as they can about Booth; they like to see what you’ve gained by talking to current students and alums. Attending Booth events is highly recommended. Know the resources Booth has to use, what Booth offers. That will make your essay crisp, clear and passionate about Booth.
2. Short Answer Essays:
a. What has been your biggest challenge, and what have you learned from it? (200 words maximum)
b. Tell us about something that has fundamentally transformed the way you think. (200 words maximum)When selecting topics for these essays, keep in mind the (relatively) short list of adjectives that Booth’s adcom told Aringo they seek in a candidate. Find experiences in your life that allow you, very concisely, to display these characteristics: confident, humble (these two only seem mutually exclusive), risk-taker, knowing how to address weaknesses as well as strengths, teamworker, teamworker and teamworker. Leadership is very important, but the ability to team-work, help others become their best, is priceless; similarly, collaboration skills are crucial.
While Booth seeks analytical candidates, that does not necessarily mean mathematically oriented. That said, they do take the quant side seriously and pride themselves on basing ideas on facts.
Booth reads your essays looking for that spark- someone who will be an active member in their community, as demonstrated by a history of activity – in sports, politics, community…
Now, on to the real challenge, finding a challenge and another transforming experience, personal or professional, demonstrating that the list of characteristics above describes you. Note that the first question does not call for ‘a’ challenge, but your ‘biggest’ challenge. If you can, consider using an example of how you applied the ‘lesson learned’ from the challenge you faced, rather than just stating the lesson.
The second essay must describe something that didn’t just change your thinking, but caused a ‘fundamental’ change. The question is designed to elicit responses that show your character. Show them your spark.
3. Presentation/Essay: The Chicago experience will take you deeper into issues, force you to challenge assumptions, and broaden your perspective. In a four-slide presentation or an essay of no more than 600 words, broaden our perspective about who you are. Understanding what we currently know about you from the application, what else would you like us to know?
Question 3 Guidelines
• The content is completely up to you. There is no right, or even preferred, approach to this presentation.
• There is a strict maximum of four pages (presentation) or 600 words (essay), though you can provide fewer if you choose.
• Acceptable formats for upload in the online application system are PowerPoint or PDF.
• The document will be viewed electronically, but we cannot support embedded videos, music, or motion images. Additionally, all content MUST be included in the four pages; hyperlinks will not be viewed.
• The file will be evaluated on the quality of content and ability to convey your ideas, not on technical expertise or presentation.
If the goal is broaden the adcom’s perspective about you and tell them something you want them to know that they don’t already see from the rest of your application, begin by deciding what you want to convey. Be sure to use the space to tell them something new about yourself that demonstrates the qualities they value in a candidate (see analysis of Essay 2 above).
Knowing what you want to tell them may make the format easier to decide on. This is the first, of the 6 years that Booth has been asking this question, that they have offered the option of submitting an essay. If you are not a poet, graphic designer, artist, etc., compelling prose can be an excellent option.
That said, look for a topic to show them your personality, then move on to format – PowerPoint, photography, book cover, slides of how you’ve changed or separate slides of various sides of you. Ask friends, co-workers, and family for suggestions of ways to present what you want to say, and show them drafts for feedback. While the options are so many it can induce an anxiety attack, try not to get as hung up on the format as on the content. Remember, the file will be evaluated on the quality of content and ability to convey your ideas, not on technical expertise or presentation.

עדכונים מהרוורד – לו"ז סיבוב ראשון ופרופיל ראשוני של המחזור החדש
הרוורד פרסמו בבלוג של ועדת הקבלה עדכון למגישי הסיבוב הראשון עם לו"ז מפורט של השתלשלות התהליך:
הדדליין הוא ב-24 בספטמבר, 12:00 בצהריים – אין עדיפות למגישים לפני הדדליין אבל כדאי לא לחכות לרגע האחרון בגלל העומס הצפוי על השרת.
בין 17-24 באוקטובר יישלחו זימונים לראיון באימייל. הערים בהן יתקיימו הראיונות כוללות את לונדון, פריז, דובאי, שנגחאי, סאו פאולו, פאלו אלטו, ניו יורק וכמובן בקמפוס בבוסטון. הראינות יתקיימו מהשבוע האחרון של אוקטובר ועד אמצע נובמבר.
ב-24 באוקטובר חלק המועמדים שלא זומנו לראיון יקבלו הודעת דחיה, ומועמדים אחרים יקבלו הזמנה להצטרף לרשימת ההמתנה ואולי יזומנו לראיון בסיבוב השני.
ב-12 בדצמבר יפורסמו תוצאות הסיבוב הראשון עבור המועמדים שהתראיינו, כאשר ההחלטה יכולה להיות קבלה, דחיה או כניסה לרשימת ההמתנה.בנוסף פרסמו בהרוורד כמה נתונים על מחזור 2014 שמתחיל בימים אלו את לימודיו בתוכנית ה-MBA. רוב המועמדים סיימו את התואר הראשון לפני 3-5 שנים, 20% מהם הקימו עסק, 57% מהם עבדו מחוץ למדינה שלהם במשך 3 חודשים או יותר, 9% עבדו או מתכננים לעבוד בעסק המשפחתי, ועבור 14% מהם העבודה האחרונה היתה בחברת סטארט-אפ.

קולומביה פרסמו את פרופיל המחזור שמתחיל את לימודיו בתוכניות ה-MBA בינואר ואוגוסט 2012. מתוך 5409 אפליקיישנס שהוגשו לתוכנית, 545 סטודנטים מתחילים את הלימודים בתוכנית ה-MBA בספטמבר ו-196 בתוכנית ינואר, מתוכם 38% סטודנטים בינ"ל ו-38% נשים. הגיל הממוצע הוא 28, עם כ-5 שנות נסיון תעסוקתי בממוצע.
ממוצע ה-GMAT של המתקבלים הוא 715, ממוצע ציוני תואר ראשון הוא 3.5, ל-31% יש תואר ראשון מתחומי מדעי החברה ו-30% ממנהל עסקים, 29% עבדו בתחום השירותים הפיננסיים ו-20% עבדו ביעוץ.בעקבות פרסום הנתונים התפרסמה כתבה באתר Poets & Quants שמדווחת על ירידה משמעותית של 19% בכמות האפליקיישנס שהוגשו השנה לתוכנית ה-MBA בקולומביה (1260 פחות לעומת השנה שעברה). ירידה זו בולטת גם על רקע הירידה בכללית בכמות האפליקיישנס לתוכניות ה-MBA המובילות השנה, כגון וורטון והרוורד שרשמו ירידות מתונות יחסית.
הירידה בקולומביה, תוכנית שקשורה לתחום השירותים הפיננסיים, מקושרת למכה שספג מגזר השירותים הפיננסיים בשנים האחרונות, ממנה עוד לא התאושש לגמרי. כתוצאה מכך מועמדי MBA (וקולומביה) פוטנציאליים מהמגזר הפיננסי בוחרים להישאר בעבודתם ולא לצאת ללימודים, ובנוסף החברות הבולטות במגזר מגייסות פחות בוגרי MBA. לכן בתי ספר שמזוהים פחות עם המגזר הפיננסי ספגו ירידות מתונות יותר. גם NYU Stern שמזוהה עם המגזר הפיננסי ספג ירידה משמעותית של 11.5% בכמות האפליקיישנס בשנה שעברה.

פרופיל המחזור שמתחיל את לימודיו החודש בתוכנית ה-MBA בהרוורד מראה כי אחוז הסטודנטים שסיים תואר ראשון רק לפני שנתיים ירד ב-48% מ-118 בשנה שעברה ל-58 השנה, למרות ההשפעה של תוכנית 2+2 שנועדה למשוך מועמדים צעירים יותר. כשמשווים את הנתונים למצב לפני שנתיים המגמה בולטת עוד יותר – כמות הסטודנטים עם 2-3 שנות נסיון תעסוקתי בלבד ירדה ב-31.6% בעוד שכמות הסטודנטים עם 5 שנות נסיון תעסוקתי או יותר עלתה ב-51.7% לעומת 2010. מספר הסטודנטים שסיימו תואר ראשון לפני 8-10 שנים עלה ב-226% לעומת 2010, בעיקר בשל העובדה שבהרוורד יש העדפה מסוימת ליוצאי צבא שנוטים להיות מבוגרים יותר.
הפתעה נוספת בנתונים היא ההשפעה הנמוכה יחסית של תוכנית 2+2 על הצערת הכיתה. השנה הרוורד קיבלו את המחזור השני של מועמדים התוכנית שהתקבלו לפני שנתיים ודחו את תחילת הלימודים בשנתיים, אך מסתבר שרבים מהם ביקשו דחיה נוספת במועד תחילת הלימודים מאחר ומצאו עבודה שהם אוהבים.

הרוורד פרסמו בבלוג של ועדת הקבלה כמה טיפים והנחיות אחרונות עבור מועמדי הסיבוב הראשון שיגישו בשבוע הבא.
– הרוורד ממליצים למועמדים לא לעשות מאמצים גדולים מדי להתבלט או לנסות להיות חריגים, אלא לספר בפשטות על עצמם ועל הבחירות שעשו בחייהם – לימודים, קריירה וכו'. למרות המיתוס לפיו מועמדים עם רקע חריג או מיוחד הם בעלי סיכויי קבלה גבוהים יותר, הרוורד מקבלים מועמדים רבים עם רקע "מסורתי".
– חשוב להכיר היטב את שיטת הקייס על פיה מתנהלים הלימודים בתוכנית ה-MBA בהרוורד. כל מועמד צריך לשאול את עצמו אם השיטה מתאימה לו, ובמידה ולא אין טעם שינסה להתקבל להרוורד.
– בעת בחירת הממליצים, חשוב מאוד לבחור כאלה שידעו לענות על השאלה "איזו עצה בונה נתת למועמד?". ממליץ שלא מסוגל לענות על השאלה הזו ככל הנראה לא מכיר את המועמד מספיק טוב כדי לכתוב המלצה אפקטיבית.
– הרוורד מדגישים כי חשוב להם לבחור היטב את המתקבלים מתוך כלל המועמדים כדי ליצור כיתה מגוונת, והם מחפשים הבדלים בין המועמדים לא רק בפרמטרים המקובלים אלא גם בפרמטרים כגון סגנון מנהיגות.
– מועמד חייב להכניס באפליקיישן באופן לא רשמי את ציוני ה-GMAT/GRE שלו, כאשר הציונים הרשמיים יכולים להגיע מאוחר יותר.
– יש להכניס לאפליקיישן את פרטי הממליצים לפני הדדליין כדי להבטיח שהם יוכלו לגשת למערכת ההמלצות.
– מומלץ להגביל את קורות החיים לעמוד אחד (למרות שבאפליקיישן ההנחיה היא עד 2 עמודים).
– הרוורד מדגישים שאין להגיש חומרים נוספים מלבד מה שדרוש באפליקיישן.
– סיוע כספי ניתן על בסיס צורך בלבד, והוא לא ניתן יחד עם הודעת הקבלה, כלומר הגשת האפליקיישן אינה מהווה בקשה למלגה. לאחר שהמועמד מתקבל הוא יכול להגיש בקשה נפרדת לסיוע כספי.

כתבה שפורסמה בוול סטריט ג ורנל מדווחת על נתונים חדשים שפורסמו ע"י GMAC ולפיהם נרשמה ירידה נוספת, זו השנה הרביעית ברציפות, בכמות האפליקיישנס לתוכניות full time MBA. הסקר של GMAC כלל 744 תוכניות מנהל עסקים ב-359 בתי ספר ברחבי העולם.
באופן כללי, 62% מבתי הספר בארה"ב רשמו ירידה בכמות האפליקיישנס לתוכניות ה-MBA שלהם, בעוד שדווקא בבתי ספר באסיה נרשמה עליה של כ-80% בכמות האפליקיישנס, בעיקר עקב העדפה של אסיאתיים רבים את בתי הספר המקומיים על פני האמריקאים. גם באירופה המצב פחות גרוע, כאשר 37% מתוכניות ה-MBA החד-שנתיות דיווחו על עליה בכמות המועמדים השנה. המספר החציוני של האפליקיישנס בכל העולם ירד ב-22% ב-2012 לאחר ירידה של כ-10% בשנה שעברה. הסיבה העיקרית שיכולה להסביר את הירידה המתמשכת היא חוסר הודאות הכלכלית בעולם, שגורמת למועמדים פוטנציאליים להיזהר מההשקעה המשמעותית של זמן וכסף בתוכנית MBA של שנתיים.
במסגרת הירידה הכללית, כמה מבתי הספר המובילים ספגו ירידות חדות – קולומביה דיווחה על ירידה של 19%, מישיגן עם ירידה של 17%, סטרן עם ירידה של 11.5%, ייל עם ירידה של 9.5% ו טאק עם ירידה של 8.8%. בי"ס אחד שהפתיע עם עליה משמעותית הוא UCLA שרשם עליה של 22% בכמות האפליקיישנס לתוכנית ה-MBA השנה, הודות למאמצי השיווק האגרסיביים של ביה"ס ששלח אימיילים למועמדים רבים והסביר להם מדוע כדאי לפנות לתוכנית שלהם.
על רקע הירידה בכמות המועמדים לתוכניות ה-full time MBA, בולטת העליה בכמות המועמדים לתוכניות part time, online and executive MBA בשל העובדה שמועמדים רבים מעדיפים ללמוד בלי לעזוב את העבודה שלהם. עליה נרשמה גם בביקוש לתוכניות מיוחדות לתואר שני בתחומי מנהל עסקים, חשבונאות, שיווק ותקשורת, אליהן ניתן לפנות מיד לאחר התואר הראשון כדי להעשיר את הרקע האקדמי לפני הכניסה לשוק העבודה.נכתב ע"י גלעד דובובסקי ב-24/9/2012, 18:07

ה- Economist פרסם את הדירוג השנתי של 100 תוכניות ה-MBA המובילות בעולם, כשאת המקום הראשון תפסה תוכנית ה-MBA של Chicago Booth, שעלתה מהמקום השני בשנה שעברה. במקום השני דורג Tuck שנפל מהמקום הראשון ב-2011, ובמקום השלישי דורג במפתיע Darden. אגב, כשהתפרסם הדירוג היה דרדן במקום השני וטאק בשלישי, אך אז התגלתה טעות בחישוב הנתונים ולאחר כמה שעות תוקן הדירוג ושני בתי הספר החליפו מקומות.
הדירוג של האקונומיסט נחשב לחריג ושנוי במחלוקת (מעולם לא דירג את הרוורד, סטנפורד או וורטון במקום הראשון, ב-2009 דירג את IESE במקום הראשון בעולם) וכולל הפתעות רבות, כגון וורטון שדורג רק במקום ה-13 למרות שנחשב בעיני רבים כשייך לטופ-3, LBS רק במקום ה-12 וקלוג רק במקום ה-20, לעומת IESE ו- IMD שהשתחלו לעשיריה הראשונה בעולם. הדירוג של האקונומיסט מתבסס על סקרים בקרב סטודנטים ומדרג את תוכניות ה-MBA לפני המשקלים שהעניקו הסטודנטים לגורמים שחשובים להם בתוכניות MBA. הקטגוריות העיקריות היו פתיחת הזדמנויות קריירה חדשות (35%), התפתחות אישית וחויה חינוכית (35%), עליה בשכר (20%) ופוטנציאל הנטוורק (10%). הנתונים נאספו באמצעות שאלונים שחולקו לבתי הספר, לסטודנטים ולבוגרים טריים, כאשר ניתן משקל של 80% לנתונים שסיפקו בתי הספר ו-20% לדירוגים של הסטודנטים והבוגרים.
המקום הראשון של שיקגו הוא בעיקר בזכות העובדה שביה"ס מצטיין בפתיחת הזדמנויות קריירה חדשות עבור בוגריו, שמצאו עבודות במגוון רחב של תעשיות והסתייעו רבות בשירותי ההשמה של התוכנית. ע"פ האקונומיסט, השכר הממוצע של בוגרי שיקגו היא $113,217, שהוא אמנם נמוך מזה של בוגרי הרוורד וסטנפורד, אך משקף גידול בשכר של 63% לעומת 56% בלבד בסטנפורד ו-44% בהרוורד.
