קודם כל אעמיד דברים על דיוקם – כתבתי שלא התקבלתי להארוורד, ובדיעבד אני מבין שזה מקום שלא מתאים לי. אם הייתי מתקבל הייתי הולך, כיון שכאשר הייתי בתהליך האפליקיישן לא הייתי מודע להבדלי האווירה בין בתי הספר והמותג היה מטה אותי.

כמות הפרוייקטים שבני הכיתה שלי יוזמים היא לא יאומנת. לא יודע את המספר המדויק אבל יש כבר כמה אנשים במחזור שלי שבתהליך אקטיבי של פתיחת סטארט-אפ.
מה שתעשה מהלימודים שלך כאן תלוי אך ורק בעצמך. אתה יכול להעברי שנתיים בכיף – הלימודים לא קשים מדי (ולאף אחד לא אכפת מהציונים), יש המון אופציות לבילויים, קל למצוא עבודה, החיים יפים.
אופציה שניה היא לעשות מה ששחר עשה בלימודים שלו – ללכת ולחפש פרוייקטים להשתלב בהם, ליזום, ליצור קשרים ולעשות מהלימודים שלך חוויה משמעותית.

חשוב שתבין, שהאמריקאים אלופים בליצור הזדמנויות להכיר אנשים (וכמו שטל כתב – לתת לטבע להמשיך מנקודה זו) זה דבר שלא מוכר בארץ ולכן ארחיב תוך שימוש במשל חיפוש בת זוג:
כשאתה בא לאירוע חברתי בארץ המארח אומר לך שלום אבל אחרי שניה אתה לבד בחדר, לא יודע מה לעשות עם עצמך ואיך להתחיל שיחה עם בחורה שמוצאת חן בעינייך. לעומת זאת, כאן בארה"ב המארח מציג אותך בפני הנוכחים, אומר כמה מילים על הרקע שלך (זה ירון, הוא עובד בתור XX והתחביבים שלו הם ZZ) כדי ליצור עניין ורצון למישהי לגשת אליך ולהציג את עצמה כיון שיש לכם תחום עניין משותף, או מכר משותף וכו. בהתחלה זה נראה טפשי, אבל מהר מאוד אתה שם לב שזה נורא הגיוני ובאמת הכרת הרבה אנשים חדשים.

קח את המוטיב הזה ותתרגם אותו לחיפוש שותפים לרעיונות – יש המון אירועים חברתיים שנועדו ליצור מפגשים בין "בני זוג" לסטארט אפים. המשתתפים עונדים תגים בצבעים שונים שמסמלים מה אתה מחפש (שותף/רעיון/עבודה וכו) – במידה מסויימת זה מזכיר ספיד דייטינג… בשעתיים של אירוע כזה יוצא לך לדבר עם עשרות אנשים, להחליף רעיונות, ליצור קשרים לאסוף כרטיסי ביקור וכדומה.

מקור נוסף ליצירת קשר הוא כמובן הכיתה – בין אם זה סתם חברים או הכיתות היעודיות לעניין שטל ושחר הזכירו.

לגבי הנגישות של הפרופסורים – מדהים. אני עובד כרגע עם חבר של סטארט-אפ שאני מקווה שייצא לפועל. שלחתי מייל לפרופ' אד רוברטס וביקשתי ממנו שיקשר אותי עם יזמים כדי לקבל מהם דעה על הרעיון. תוך שעתיים קיבלתי תשובה עם המון המלצות, עצות ואנשים שכדאי לי לפנות אליהם. חזרתי אליו עם בקשה ספציפית להיכרות, והוא שלח מייל שמצורף בהמשך, כדי שתראה בעצמך מה זו היכרות סטייל אמריקה. דרך אגב – כמובן שהבחור שהוא יזם סדרתי שכרגע עסוק בטירוף בסטארט אפ חדש ענה לי תוך דקות והסכים להפגש איתי. אין לי ספק שאם אזדקק ליצור קשר עם משקיעים (אינשאללה) – זה יהיה קל באותה מידה.

אדיר – גם לי היתה בדיוק את אותה הדילמה לפני שנה ומה שהכריע היה בסופו של דבר ההתאמה לתוכנית. בהתחלה הייתי ממש ממש נעול על ה LFM והיה לי אפליקיישן כבר כמעט גמור, אך ברגע האחרון התחרטתי כי הרגשתי שהתוכנית הזאת מתאימה הרבה פחות ל career plan שלי מאשר המסלול הרגיל. אני די בטוח שאם הייתי מגיש ל LFM רוב הסיכויים שלא הייתי מתקבל בגלל הסיבה הזאת. אם אתה נרשם ל LFM, תדאג להעביר את המסר שאין מתאימה יותר מהתוכנית הזאת בשביל התוכניות העתידיות שלך. אל תשכח שהיא תוכנית מאוד קטנה (40-50).

לגבי R1 vs R2, אני חייב לומר שאני לא כל כך מאמין בזה, אבל אני ממש לא מומחה בנושא. לי נראה הגיוני לחשוב שב R2 מתקבלים הרבה פחות, אך גם מגישים הרבה פחות מאשר ב R1, כך שבסיכומו של עניין זה אותו הדבר.

עיון מהיר בלוחות הזמנים מראה שקבלת התוצאות של תוכנית LFM היא ב-10 במרץ, ואילו מועד ההגשה של R2 לתוכנית ה-MBA הרגילה הוא 15 בינואר. כלומר, כאשר תדע בוודאות שלא התקבלת ל-LFM, זה יהיה מאוחר מדי בשביל לגשת ל-R2 בתוכנית הרגילה (אלא אם קיימת אפשרות להעברה אוטומטית של האפליקיישן – העברה פנימית בתוך סלואן – מתוכנית ה-LFM לתוכנית הרגילה, ועל כך אתה בונה…).

אכן בדקתי את לוחות הזמנים ושלחתי מייל לדבי בנושא שהעבירה אותי לאחראית מטעם LFM. מבחינת לוחות הזמנים הדבר מסודר ואף רשום ב- FAQ של LFM. האפליקיישן שלך עובר באופן אוטומטי ל- R2 אם זה לא מסתדר ב- LFM. מה שהטריד אותי זו בדיקה "נאותה" של האפליקיישן שלך ל- MBA הרגיל אם אתה נופל מה- LFM חס וחלילה, ואכן נאמר לי במייל שמדובר בועדה אחרת, כאילו שנרשמת ל- R2 מלכתחילה. כמו-כן אני מעוניין לדעת האם כדאי במקרה כזה להיות ב- R2 לעומת R1 (מה שאין לי אפשרות לבחור בסיטואציה כזו), וזה משהו שדבי כמובן לא יכולה למסור לי :)

I have a question regarding the essyas, they ask that the subjects of the essays will be based on experiences from the 1-2 last year. How strict is this demand? (3-4 years is ok?). Its kind of hard to write so many essays based on only the last 2 years! is that intentional?

I think it is important that you keep focused on the last 2 years as they request.

I heard Debbie mention not once that they put emphasis on
your experiences from recent years

I know it is difficult to find so many stories from the last 2 years (it was hard for me too) but look for stories from work, university if it was in the last 2 years or even Miluiim instead of regular army stories.

Like you said, MIT puts 1-2 years as a requirement for a reason and I think it is a good advice to follow their recommendation.

Hi Paz,

I agree with what Roy said – you should focus on stories from the recent past (1-2 years) since it doesn't make sense in a normal career progress, that the most responsibility and the most stressful or successful experiences did not occur in your latest work positions.
That being said, if there is a great story that best demonstrates one of your qualities or highlights one of your themes – like an army story for instance – it is not forbidden to use it. Just make sure that it is truly an exceptional story that will not leave the reader wondering – is this the best example that he/she has?

Some impressions from Sloan,

This year there are 12 new Israelis here and overall 24 Israelis out of about 800 people in the school. Being such a great Israeli student body in a small program feels great and also helps a lot. The year has started and we are already in full speed here, I found out that one of the problems is deciding what not to do and where not to go

Hi All,
I wanted to share some thoughts about Sloan from the 2+ months that I have been here:
Program size – I don’t know how would it have been in a large program but Sloan is 370-400 student a year and this is considered a relatively small program. Being a part of a smaller program has many benefits and much less disadvantages in my mind. One example is the individual support we can receive from staff and career development office which would have been more challenging in a larger program. Another example is your ability to influence in clubs and in other channels, I assume that if we would have been twice as large it would not have been the same. On the flip side I did not find many occurrences where this has limited anything, 750-800 people at Sloan still is a good size group.
Boston area – Boston is a thriving area in the BioTech industry and also in high tech and other industries. Many startups are located in the area and this is a great opportunity for us aspiring entrepreneurs to reach out to them and get advice and learn. Just this week I met with a startup founder from the area, a Sloany ’04, also happen to be Israeli and he cleared an hour for me and 3 more class mates to tell us about his experience in founding his company.
Being part of the MIT community is a huge asset – as Sloanies we have access to all of MIT’s resources and it is very common to send a mail to a professor in another school and talk to him about an idea you have. MIT also has very extensive support for entrepreneurs in developing the product, finding the right team and funding.
There are many more aspects which I can continue to write about like the different tracks, academics, spirit, but let’s leave something for the future.

Naama,

Generally the teaching uses both cases and theoretical classes to teach the material. Some classes are more focused on theoretical teaching (such as many of the quant driven classes) while others use cases and articles exclusively.

MIT Sloan is all about team work. From your core experience with your core team who work together through the first semester, through your many other classes at MIT Sloan and of course the work done through the many clubs and student led initiatives. For example, last semester, out of 6 courses, I only had 1 final, but had 5 team projects which we worked on throughout the semester.

You can choose your classes from the second semester of classes and can pick and choose those that are a better fir for your learning style – cases/lecture, team/individual, etc.

Hey Everyone,

Since many of you are working hard these days on your applications, I thought that the following information would be relevant to those who are interested in a finance career and are considering MIT Sloan. The information below is about a track in finance which has just been introduced in Sloan (similar to the Entrepreneurship & Innovation model).

I myself have an engineering background and found this track to be very useful and a great way to ease my transition into finance. One of the things that the track has to offer is the introductory proseminar directed by Prof. Andrew Lo (one of the world's most respected financial economists and a Hedge Fund Guru, in addition to him being an amazing professor). This seminar has opened me to a big base of knowledge encompassing the different finance roles available in today's markets and has clarified my understanding of basic concepts concerning today's Global economic crisis.

Since the financial crisis has got even worse, the school has started to offer special workshops, panels, courses and guest speakers that address this financial crisis. These are extremely useful for the Sloan community as a whole as they ensure that all the community (and not only those who are interested in finance careers) is fully updated and knowledgeable about the different aspect and technical details of this crisis.

The MIT Sloan MBA Track in Finance

Following in its tradition of innovation and excellence in finance, the MIT Sloan School of Management is pleased to announce a new MBA track, the Track in Finance. The Track in Finance consists of a set of required courses, focused electives, and extra–curricular activities that will prepare MBA students for a career in Finance. Enrollment for the Track in Finance is open to all first year MBA students. Upon successful completion, students will receive a Track in Finance Certificate, issued by Sloan, in addition to their MBA degree. Students in the Track will complete the following required finance courses which will provide basic prerequisites: 15.401 Finance Theory I (to be taken in the Fall semester of the first year), 15.402 Finance Theory II, 15.451 Proseminar in Financial Engineering or 15.452 Proseminar in Financial Management.

In addition, Track in Finance students will be required to participate in an introductory proseminar – An Introduction to the Practice of Finance – in which first–year students are exposed to some of the basic institutions and practices of the financial industry, which will include panel discussions with representatives from various leading financial institutions, MIT alumni currently engaged in the financial services sector, and leading industry vendors. Finance Track electives are designed to prepare students for more specific career paths within the finance industry. In particular, Finance Track students can select one of the following six specializations:
Asset Management, Corporate Finance, Financial Engineering, Financial Technology, Risk Management, Sales and Trading

Within each specialization, there is a customized list of electives tailored to the demands of that career path. Students are expected to take 39-42 units of Track electives. To receive the Track certificate, students are expected to maintain a minimum GPA of 4.2 in their Track courses.

my question is do you know of anyone who got this scholarship?

Hi Erez,

First of all good luck in the application process. MIT Sloan is very fond of Israelis and we have a great community (mafia) here :)

Secondly, to my best knowledge there was never an Israeli who got that scholarship (or who applied to it) – others may correct me if I am wrong.

I did notice however that few of my class mates here did get it but they come mainly from countries like India, China etc…

But with the whole loans issues right now, I think that applying to every scholarship out there (assuming it does not entail too much work) is a very good idea :)

לא נכון להניח שהסיכויים נמוכים. הם יכולים להיות פחות גבוהים מהסיבוב הראשון אבל זה שאין סיבוב שלישי, לא אומר שסיכויי הקבלה בסיבוב השני נמוכים.

אני מכיר הרבה סטודנטים שהתקבלו בסיבוב השני וזה הרבה יותר שכיח פה ממספר הסטודנטים שהתקבלו בסיבוב שלישי שאתה רואה במקומות אחרים.

סיכויי הסיבוב השני תלויים בכמה גורמים:
1. כמה התקבלו בסיבוב הראשון וכמה מתוכם קבלו את ההצעה (בזמן ההחלטה של הסיבוב השני, כבר די ברור מה קורה עם מתקבלי הסיבוב הראשון).

2. כמה אנשים הגישו בסיבוב השני. למרות שבדרך כלל מתקבלים פחות אנשים, לא תמיד זה אומר שהסיכויים נמוכים יותר כי בסיבוב השני בדרך כלל גם מגישים פחות אנשים (בסדרי גודל של עשרות אחוזים).

3. הרקע וחוזק המועמדות שלך לעומת האחרים שהתקבלו בסיבוב הראשון ואלו שהגישו בסיבוב השני. לדעתי זה הכי משמעותי. יש מועמדים שיכולים להגיש בכל סיבוב (לטוב ולרע) ויש כאלו שכדאי שיגישו בראשון.

4. כמה ישראלים הבית ספר מתכנן לקבל השנה.

הבעיה היא שהפרמטרים האלו מתבהרים רק במשך הזמן אז לרוב כדאי להגיש בסיבוב הראשון כדי לנהל את הסיכון אבל זה לא בהכרח מתברר כנכון בדיעבד.

בנוסף לחוסר הוודאות לגבי הפרמטרים לעיל, השנה נראית מוזרה בינתיים: א. יש הרבה יותר מועמדים באופן כללי (כנראה, בגלל המצב הכלכלי)ב. יש עדיין עליה במספר המועמדים הישראלי. ג. פחות ישראלים קבלו השנה הזמנות לראיון.

לכן קשה לי לתת לך מידע על סיכויי הקבלה בסיבוב השני. יכול להיות שהם יהיו נמוכים יותר מהראשון ויכול להיות ההיפך.

אבל הכי חשוב (ורלוונטי עבורך) זה שאני לא חושב שזה שאין סיבוב שלישי אומר שסיכויי הסיבוב השני נמוכים כמו סיבוב שלישי בבתי ספר אחרים. הבית ספר לא מנסה למלא את רוב הכיתה כבר בסיבוב הראשון. אם זה היה כך, אז סיכויי הסיבוב השני היו באמת נמוכים כמו מה שאתה רואה בסיבוב שלישי במקומות אחרים כי הכיתה כבר התמלאה בשני הסיבובים הראשונים.

לדעתי כדאי שתגיש. זה בכלל לא יהיה בזבוז זמן או חסר סיכוי כמו הגשה בסיבוב שלישי מסורתי.
