Hi Gilam,
I was wondering whether I should get the 2 MIT recommenders from work or one from a (weekly) volunteering activity I have been doing for a year.
I only have 2 years of work experience, thus I don't have many impressive stories to fit to both the essays and 2 recommendations. I believe that my direct supervisor from work can give me a very good and detailed recommendation. On the other hand, my direct supervisor from the volunteering activity (a young lady without such a long experience in the field) can give me a great recommendation, but mostly full of praises and adjectives and less of specific examples. The detailed stories are more about how I work with children, and less about leadership activities. She definitely believes that I'm one of the best volunteers she has, also when it comes to leadership, communication and initiative among the group of volunteers, but the stories that demonstrate that are not impressive enough to be counted as a leadership-oriented experience. Moreover, I'm planning to dedicate a whole essay to the one serious leadership experience that I do have from this volunteer activity. If I'm taking another recommender from work – someone who knows me well (but not perfectly) and will be happy to do that – then, as I said, I will be facing a shortage of successful detailed examples to be included in this recommendation. I also don't think it will be a good idea to repeat a story from my essays or from the other recommendation (Is it true? I believe that although told from another point of view, the result will be quite similar).
What would you recommend me to do?

Hi Gilam,

I am an Israeli female, 27, 720, B.Sc. magna cum laude (top 20%) in computer science from the Hebrew University.

During my last undergrad year I worked part-time for Intel as an engineer. Since then and for the last two years I am working as a software engineer for a $1B software company.

My target schools are Columbia, NYU, MIT, and Berkeley. I would be grateful if you could evaluate my admission chances considering three alternatives.

My boyfriend is going to start an MBA at one of the top schools in a month. Suppose I join him and find a software position, I will apply for the class of 2011 after working for less than a year on the new company. It is also pretty sure that I will not be in a leading position in this new company, and that the company will not be in the same industry as that of my current one. Let’s also suppose I will not get a recommendation from this company.

A second alternative is to stay in Israel with my current company, maybe receive a promotion to lead 2 people, and apply for the class of 2010.

The last option is to go to the US now and apply to class of 2010 while probably unemployed and looking for a job, and being part of my boyfriend’s MBA community.

How would my chances be in the schools I mentioned considering each alternative?

גילעם שלום,

רציתי לקבל הערכה לגבי סיכויי הקבלה שלי לאוניברסיטאות המובילות בארה"ב.

סיימתי מדעי המחשב בירושלים בממוצע 91.5 (כנראה לא בהצטיינות, אבל 25% עליונים). בשנה ג' עבדתי בחצי משרה בחברת הייטק גדולה מאוד במונחים בינלאומיים.

מזה כחצי שנה אני מתכנתת בחברה גדולה במונחים ישראליים (נסחרת בנאסדק).

בצבא הייתי פקידת מבצעים בחיל האוויר. בפועל הייתי אחראית על 4 אנשים במשך כשנה וקיבלתי תעודת חיילת מצטיינת ממפקד הטייסת.

אני מעריכה שאוכל להוציא בסביבות 700 בGMAT.

לאילו אוניברסיטאות אני יכולה להיחשב רלוונטית? (טופ 10, טופ 20 וכו')

בנוסף, אני שוקלת אפשרות של עבודה של שנתיים בארה"ב בתחום ההייטק (התחלה בתכנות) ורק לאחריהן להגיש מועמדות. כמה זה ישנה את המצב?
