The economy in the US these days is probably at the worst state since the great depression, this had of course a drastic effect on the MBA students. Basically its all about supply and demand. Companies these days have less jobs to offer and more candidates per available position.

This causes a situation in which companies these days are much more selective, if they have a brand management internship they'll look for someone with brand management experience and they will have at least several applicants with this experience.

rule of thumb is that companies are hiring in around 25% volume of what they did before, this is dependent on industry/function (some are doing better/worst)

How does that relate to international students? well take everything I said and put it in the power of 2 or 3… this is a very bad situation for internationals

Still, it is possible to find good internships. you'll have to work much harder than before. if you have a good strategy, relevant work experience and you're doing everything 'right' its possible to find internships. for us Israelis this might be a bit more complicated because we cant really intern in our home countries as south americans or europeans but as I said earlier, if you're doing 'everything right' you have a good chance of finding an internship. for that you will need help from 2nd years when you arrive on campus to give you guidance. If you are 100% career switcher your odds are close to 0 even if you're doing everything right. banks are not hiring internationals anymore because of the stimulus package (look for 'tarp'), Hi-Tech companies also seem to stop hiring internationals (they barely hire anyone) though this is not an 'official' stand yet (seems to be getting there)

nobody knows what will happen next year, its all guesses, if they knew something about economics here we wouldnt be in this situation in the first place.

and one last thing, its important to understand that job search here is very different from Israel or any other place and as foreigners your starting point is behind the Americans even if you have 800 gmat and 150 IQ, in the US your tongue is more important than your brain! (and you dont just talk with your tongue if you know what i mean parden me…), bottom line it is possible to succeed but you'll need good strategy and to work harder than before, you are not going into vacation

This should give you some food for thought:

    http://caitlinweaver.blog.com/3888318/

Add to that the fact that you probably dont have a work permit and it can give you a good sense of what's currently going on

What does this mean? not much, its all about personal decisions and work experience, in the long run if someone is good he should succeed, the question is how much time it will take

    A bit off topic…

Does anyone here knows someone who study/studied in Yale and his contact details?

    Thanks

Hi Tal, thanks for the answer

I read your post and I'm still not 'relaxed' because it is not clear if those students had american citizenship or not … and still its only internship …

I know I'm nagging but except for the polish genes I also like to know the 'real picture', the thing is I currently dont like my job too much and a main reason for the mba is to find a 'dream' job, not compromise …

given that, there is also a good chance ill probably wont find myself going back to Hi-Tech (in a different position) but it is interesting for me to know if as an israeli you are more limited in finding jobs, I heard that from several alumnis, maybe its related to the school ranking?

    Thanks

    Hi

I heard that it is a bit difficult for Israelis to get in the Hi-Tech industry because of green card issues. Thats why most Israelis find themselves eventually working in consulting or finance, what is your opinion regarding this?

Do you know Israelis that do not have a american citizenship that got to the Hi-tech industry? did you have to give up a good job because you were foreigners?

    Thanks

    Hi Itai

take it easy, I dont think people are bashing the Technion so much …

I also studied in the Technion and in general I can say people were very nice and cooperative

The only bummer about the Technion is that getting there an average above 91 is really difficult ('mitztayen nasi' at least in my faculty), I have a feeling that grades there are lower in general in comparisson with other schools and of course there arent too many girls but this is a different story and … I also think Haifa is boring :-)

I really hope that the 'brand' name Technion means something for the admissions commitee, because being in the Technion in the top 15% is not equivalent to being top 1% in some 'kuku' college

    Some more info:

How strict is the school regarding the essays word limit? for example most of the essays are restricted to 500 words but I surprisingly find myself to be quite philosopher and i easily exceed that. This is of course only a draft stage and I understand it will shrink, but still, if for example my final version is 540 words, would that be ok?

same question for the cover letter and resume

    Thanks

אודה למי מהחברים הותיקים שיוכל ללחוץ reply ולענות לי:

אני מקווה לתרום לקהילת הפורום לפחות 20 הודעות בשנה הקרובה

    אז בהצלחה לכולם,

    Hi

I'm excited to start soon the Essays writing for next Year's MBA program

    I have 2 questions:

    1. What should I write to my old friend Rod Garcia? This is something I havent seen in other universities. What kind of a letter should I write?

    2. I'll be in cambridge in the end of September. I'm planning to visit MIT at that time. I'll be happy to receive any assistance/advice regarding the visit (and of course I'll be curious to meet some of you while I'm there …)

    Thanks

btw: the internet site is already updated with the essay topics for September 2008
