Hello Gilam,

Have few quick questions regarding procedures and few continuing our conversation.

Procedural:
1. Some universities have four rounds, why the change from three and what rounds are recommended for foreign students?

2. Are these dates applicable for foreign students or we get "special" deadlines?

3. Is it recommended to arrange an interview on campus (if possible of course) or ask for distant interview?


To continue our conversation about the correct strategy;
1. Is it smart to present personal family tragedy? Brother lost in a war while serving in the IDF?

2. Lets say that I know what I want to do after graduation. I can easily picture my self working in international high-tech companies such MS, goggle, Cisco, or Sun as a senior product manager, marketing or strategy. I know that at the moment I am lucking marketing, finance and business knowledge and experience.
What I the best why telling this? Since I want to show that I "really need" to be in this MBA program in order to learn these.

3. If I need to differential myself from other "technological" candidates I would say the following: " I would like to position my self as entrepreneurship working in small high-tech startup companies, as a (technical) leader and as a responsible manager with proven experience and great ability to deliver. …"

The question is how do I play on the entrepreneurship side? In what why do I need to present my proven management experience?

One of my best virtues (so says my work colleagues) is the ability to deliver on time and improvise when we have no time. What is the best way of showing it?

Dear Gilam,

Thank you for your response, I would like to ask few more questions regarding the issues you mentioned.

On the subject of "strategy" I want to add a little more information on my background so you can have better picture.

I have a very strong technology background; I began in the army as a practical electronic engineer and switch to software programming I served in the inelegance core, 8200. Are the universities aware to the "special" army service in Israel?

Later I continued building up my career as technical expert in the fields of enterprise systems and security (that's how I ended in a company creating software for television … :) However I always had an urge to explorer other areas, like product design and project management. My two years in iPace as co-founder gave the opportunity to pursue and experience these areas. iPace presented me the unique option combining management skills with my technical background. After iPace I realized that in order to become successful manager in a high-tech company, you should have some technical expertise. I continued that track of high-tech management through all my "post iPace" work experience is high-tech management. As mentioned in the previous message, currently I am GooMe's (fifteen employees) V.P. software development.

Today, after six years of high-tech management I can say that I am ready for the next big step. I see it as a partial disengagement from the "hands-on" direct technical management and phasing myself towards higher management levels, either as a "technical product guru" which devise and lead the company line of products. Or as entrepreneur leading new groundbreaking high-tech companies (once you got the bug, you can't escape … )

One last detail, today I am teaching in Tel-Aviv-Jaffa College new academic course (three credits) that I devised. The course emphasizes on practical programming and deals with "real world" programming problems, using true examples from the industry from myself and friends past experience.

In order to focus the search, I minimized the list to the following MBA programs, from which I intend to pick three or four:
Babson – entrepreneurship
Berkeley – high-tech management
MIT – high-tech management
Texas –entrepreneurship
UCLA – information systems

According to your suggestion I believe a good common denominator would be my technological background and my high-tech management experience. I think this can be a good starting point for application to Haas Management of Technology (MOT) or any other high-tech management programs like in MIT of HBS, what do you think of that ?
So, with a little more information above, what would be the best strategy in order to put it all together in order to create the best impact?

You said my past entrepreneurship experience as is will not add a lot of points, can I use my past entrepreneur background as a substitute to civil or community contribution? Since I understand from this forum that such volunteer work is usually showing the candidate has entrepreneur skills …

Dear Gilam,

I'll start with a quick introduction;
My name is Yochay Kiriaty, on February I'll be 30. For the past six years I've managed various sizes of R&D teams, ranging from three programmers up to thirteen. Today I am managing seven programmers in a high-tech company in Raanana. Except my technical position I am an integral part of the presale process and responsible for the various products (software) we produce.

Back in the good happy days of 99 and 2000, me and two other entrepreneurs secured little more then $2M and establish a company in NY and an Israeli R&D subsidiary. I was responsible for the entire operations of the Israeli subsidiary. We managed to sustain the company for 18 months before we had to shutdown. The company was unable to gain access for additional funds due to the stock market collapse.

At that stage I decided to continue my studies and complete my B.S. degree. During my studied I continued working as a manager and an R&D leader. I graduate last semester with 84.2 average.

My first question is; does my pre graduation work experience counts? Or I must have a minimum of two year post graduate work experience?

Assuming I can leverage my pre graduation work experience, what strategy do you recommend when applying to an MBA program? Since I had very little time between working full time and studying I don't have any voluntarily or community background.

I want to try and make it for next year, September 2006. I plan to take the GMAT exam on November and apply on December or January. From your past experience, is it realistic or I am day dreaming?

Before I ask the usual question, I wanted to ask, which MBA programs you think best fit the "entrepreneur" profile. Berkeley? Colombia? Tuck? Stanford? What do you think of UT at Austin? I have some connections at UT, any other recommendation?

Finally, what do you are my chances at these universities?

Last I want to say that I think this is a very helpful site and you (and your team) are doing great job.

שלום לכולם! הצטרפתי לפורום לאחרונה והבנתי שצריך לספר קצת על עצמי, אז קודם כל כמה דברים כלליים:

אני בן 29 נשוי + אלמה קטנה וחמודה. חזרתי לגור בכפר סבא לאחר החתונה ואת הזמן הפנוי (שאין) אני מעביר בכתיבת קורס אקדמי (תכנות) בשיתוף אחד מהמרצים שלי, בשחייה וכמה שיותר זמן עם המשפחה. אני מתכוון ללמוד בארה"ב באחת מתוכניות ה- MBA בשנת 2007.
הרקע שלי בא לידי ביטוי בעיקר בצד התעסוקתי, אולם אני יכול לומר כי אני אוטודידקט, וכאחד שכזה אני אוהב ללמוד ולקרוא. לימודים עצמאים על ידי קריאת ספרות ובעיקר הרבה ניסוי וטעייה.

אני עובד בתעשיית ההיי טק קצת יותר מ 8 שנים ובפועל יש לי ניסיון של בערך 12 שנים כולל השרות הצבאי. השרות ביחידת מודיעין באזור המרכז כללה בעיקר מימוש הידע הטכנולוגי ובאה לאחר 13 שנות לימוד והתמחות באלקטרוניקה ומחשבים.
לאחר מכן עברתי לתעשייה כמתכנת. בתקופת הבועה הייתי שותף מלא בחברת Startup כולל גיוס הכסף סה"כ 2.1 מיליון דולר. המיזם נמשך קצת יותר מ 16 חודשים. לאחר כישלונו הצרטפתי ל startup נוסף הפעם לא שלי, והשתלבתי בצוות המוביל תוך יישום המסקנות והניסיון אשר צברתי מהכישלון הקודם. אולם גם Starup זה נסגר עקב מחסור קשה במזומן. לאחר מכן ועד היום אני עובד בתור אחראי פיתוח בחברה קטנה אך מצליחה ברעננה אשר עוסקת בבניית מוצרים לעולם הטלוויזיה.

אני בוגר B.S.c מדעי מחשב ומתמטיקה בממכלת ת"א-יפו בממוצע של 84.2. סיימתי את הלימודים השנה לאחר ארבע שנות לימוד במקביל לעבודה במשרה מלאה כמנהל.

טרם עשיתי GMAT. מתכוון לעשות באוקטובר לאחר קורס.

בצבא הייתי ביחידת מודיעין, הייתי שותף לצוות פיתוח אשר פיתוח מוצרי אבחון. הצוות (9 אנשים) זכה בפרס אמ"ן למודיעין בשנת 1996 לאחר הצלחה של אחת המערכות שלנו. בנוסף הייתי מדריך בקורס תכנות מקצועי בבה"ד 15.
