בתגובה ל: Carnegie Mellon MBA Chat #1545
thank you for administering this, we were happy to be here,
i would be happy to answer any more questions about the school at [email protected]
בתגובה ל: Carnegie Mellon MBA Chat #1543I would like to add something. those of you who have researched a little about the school probably already know that Carnegie Mellon has features that are very appealing to Israeli students, since many of us come from the High tech industry in Israel.
as part of one of the most technological universities in the world, the school puts an emphasis on innovation and technology. it shows in all areas: from our facilities (wireless throughout the university) to the focus on quantitative and analytical approach of doing business and the type of companies that come to recruit on campus (recruiters consider our students as technology savvy people who can get the job done).

my advice is to take the time and learn as much as you can about the school. that will help you formualte a clear message of why you want to go to Carnegie Mellon (how CMU specifically, fits your career goals) and why do you think you will fit in (how your background will contribute to the student body). Carnegie Mellon has some unique features that make it different from other schools, learn about them and leverage that in your application.
בתגובה ל: Carnegie Mellon MBA Chat #1536Laurie, can you also ellaborate on the other possible scholarships? and also the other forms of financial aid

as I am sure you know, recruiting has been difficult in the past few years for all students, international and not. it is true that international students might need to work harder in their job search in order to find a job since some companies will not recruit internationals as a policy. BUT, i must tell you that out of my class (i graduated in 2003) i have not seen that internationals have less jobs that non-internationals. most of my international friends have jobs in the US. also, note that some companies are looking to increase their diversity, especially in such a market, and therefore looking to increase recruiting of internationals.

as written before, the admission committee expects you to apply to other schools as well. the reason they are asking you this is part to see if your answer fits what you have told them in other places in the application.
let me explain. your choice of schools shows what kind of MBA you are looking for (since the schools are very different from each other). for example: if you said in your application that you are looking for a school that is strong in finance because you are interested in a finance career, applying to schools which are weak in that area doesnt make sense. or, if you said that you are interested in their school because it is a small intimate program, and at the same time you apply also to Harvard which is a huge program, you are basically telling them that you didnt tell the truth.
in summary, the admission people expect your application to be comprehensive and that all your answers will fit well together (questions that to you dont seem important tell them a lot about you). every question is intentional. they wouldnt have asked it otherwise (they have enough to read).
note that they know the characteristics of the other schools very well since they compete ith them.
i hope this helps.

בתגובה ל: ארכיון 1: ???Any Israeli Applicants #426i just graduated from Carnegie Mellon MBA and it seems that according to what you are looking for, Carnegie Mellon might be a school you should consider,
Carnegie Mellon is considered one of the top in Information technology/information systems (ranked #1 or #2 by all important rankings in that area) it is also ranked as the top choice for technology recruiters. other of its strenghts are in quatitative analysis and operations. it is also considered the top technology campus, just as another perk :)
check out http://www.gsia.cmu.edu to find out more (there is a section there that is about the rankings)
regarding finance: it is ranked #4 in finance by wall street journal (which also rankes it #3 overall). i know it is not as known in finance as some of the bigger schools but from my classmates that concentrated in finance i know that our finance proffessors are very good (i am not a finance person so i dont know much about it but i can reffer you to one of my classmates who can tell you more if you want).
it is important to notice that the rankings are not the only think you should look at, they are sometimes biased or not accurate. for example, i know that CMU is not very well known for finance but we have top notch professors in that area. but then again, rectruiters do look at the rankings and many times go to schools based their reputation that is very much influenced by those rankings.
anyway, if you are interested in more information about CMU i will be happy to provide whatever i can.

בתגובה ל: ארכיון 1: ???Any Israeli Applicants #341about 50-60% of our class were engineers, so i would assume that engineers do have an edge, the program is considered as geared a lot towards that kind of population and is more quantitative that other programs. although i can tell you that as a person who was always not particularly good in math, the math part is not a big problem. the school's point of view is to teach a scientific/quatitative way of solvong problems. i found it very useful especially as aperson who didnt have the engineering background.
about the full time job outlook: i can only talk about what happened this year and i know that Carnegie Mellon is in the same situtation as most schools. i know that about half of my classmates have jobs. i just had a baby a month ago so i am taking some time off, but my husband who was in the same program as me did find a job and we are moving to Denver for it. i can say that many of the companies that came to campus this year were more from traditional industries (and not so much technology) but that is true to all schoosl. since carngie mellon is known for its strenghs in operations and technology many companies come there for hiring people into those areas.
my email is [email protected] and you can email me with any questions.
