כבר כשנסעתי ראיתי שבגלל מצבי המשפחתי אני נמצא בגבול הכדאיות.

המשבר הכלכלי שהנמיך את סיכויי למצוא עבודה והוריד כמעט לאפס את סיכויי אשתי למצוא עבודה הפך את המהלך למאוד מסוכן – סיכון שלא הייתי מוכן לקחת בגלל ילדי. כשאני נסעתי לא היו כמעט בכלל אנשים במצבי בMBA שיכלו לתת לי את המספרים המדוייקים.

בנוסף, כמו כולנו, כשאתה מתחיל את התהליך אתה די נשאב אליו ונהייה קצת עיוור…

שוב, כמו שאמרתי, אני אישית, אם היה לי את הכסף בצד הייתי מהמר וממשיך עד הסוף. מכיוון שלא היה לי לא רציתי לחשק אותי ואת משפחתי בהלוואות אינסופיות (בתוספת למשכנתא בארץ) ולכן החלטתי לחזור

השנה זו ממש לא השנה ל Carrer switch. חשוב להבין ששם קיימת ההפרדה בין INDUSTRY (הייטק, ביוטכנולוגיה,בנקאות…) ו FUNCTION (תפקיד שיווקיניהוליטכנולוגי).

Career switch מלא (גם INDUSTRY וגם FUNCTION) מאוד קשה בעוד שרק להחליף FUNCTION באותה INDUSTRY (לעבור ממתכנת למנהל מוצר בחברה טכנולוגית) זה די שכיח.

לכן לדעתי ההמלצה היא להשקיע כמה שיותר במאמץ למצוא תפקיד שונה אבל באותה תעשיה שבה יש לכם רקע. לעו"ד יש לרוב יתרון בתפקידי פיתוח עיסקי וגם טיפה בCONSULTING.

אבל השורה התחתונה היא לא "להשתולל" יותר מידי : אם עבדת כמתכנת או בחברה טכנולוגית כלשהי תשקיע הרבה בNETWORKING עם חברות הייטק (בדר"כ בתפקיד שיווקי). לאנשים עם ניסיון בנקאי (רו"ח, בנקאים, מנהלי תיקים וכו') מומץ לחפש בבנקים (כן, אלו שנשארו עדיין מגייסים) או בחברות אחרות בתפקידים פיננסיים וכו'.

עו"ד עד כמה שאני ראיתי יכולים להתרכז בחברות CONSULTING, ניהול כללי ובפיתוח עיסקי (למרות שהיום יש מספר מועט של משרות בתפקיד זה).

כמובן שהמצב ישתפר הכל ישתנה לטובה.

טוב, התלבטתי רבות האם להגיב ולבסוף החלטתי שכן.

למי שלא מכיר את הסיפור שלי, אני בן 33 בקרוב, נשוי+2 (בני 6 ו 2).

אני התחלתי את לימודי בתחילת שנה זו (אוגוסט 2008) אך בדצמבר החלטתי לחזור ארצה.

החלטתי נבעה בעיקר בגלל המשבר הכלכלי אשר אמנם פגע רק במקצת בסיכויים שלי למצוא עבודה אך הוריד כמעט לאפס את סיכויי אישתי למצוא עבודה.

עקב היותי אב לשני ילדים אחרי חישוב קל ראיתי שגם אם אמצא את עבודת חלומותי עדיין עם משכורת אחת לא אצליח לחיות בארה"ב ברמת חיים שארצה (הרי אף אחד מאיתנו לא נוסע להתכלב) ובנוסף חישבתי שייקח לי כ 7 שנים לפחות לאחר הלימודים להחזיר את ההלוואה ולא הייתי בטוח שאני רוצה להיות כבול לתקופה כזו ארוכה בארה"ב.

למרות זאת אני חייב להגיד שהחוויה הייתה מדהימה והרגשתי שלמדתי המון. לדעתי לא ניתן בכלל להגיע לקביעה גורפת האם MBA שווה או לא מכיוון שמדובר בכל מקרה לגופו (רמת משכורות של המועמד ובןבת זוגו כאן בארץ, מצב משפחתי, מצב כלכלי וכו'). כך לדוגמה לעו"ד בישראל יהיה מאוד קשה עד בלתי אפשרי לעשות carrer switch ללא MBA בחו"ל (ואני מכיר המון עו"ד שהיו מוכנים לשלם המון כסף כדי להחליף מקצוע).

אף אחד לא יודע מתי המצב ישתפר והרי גם לי אמרו שעד שאגיע כבר יגמר המשבר (ועד שאני אתגייס כבר לא יצטרכו צבא) אז זה לא משהו שכדאי להסתמך עליו.

אני אשמח לעזור לכל מי שירצה בחישוב עלויותכדאיות המהלך (המייל שלי מופיע בפרופיל).

yes, the best option should be the jewish community which can try to help you (i guess there will lawys be a rich jewish family looking for a hebrew speaking nanny) :).

in addition the university of michigan usually has open positions for partners so maybe in your case try to check on the northwestren website.

but i understood that now, those options are also hard to find.

a small advice.

the chances for finding a job for you partner is indeed related to her background and skills but you must take into consideration the current economic situation. the problem is that it is hard to find someone who is looking for employees those days.

basically i'm not saying it is impossible but when you do the math take into consideration that your wife is not going to work and earn money and check if you have the money without her help.

if she'll eventually find a job, it will just make your life easier.

most of the cost are because of the kids:

school, kindergarden, the need for a bigger house, taking them to places, health insurance and so on.

I beleieve that 100,000$ for a couple or a single guy is more then enough.

as for loans with a co-signer – university of michigan's loan ranges from prime-0.5% to prime+6% depending on your co-signer's credit history.

if you want i can connect you with a friend of mine who graduated from Kellogg last year and he can give you all the numbers.

גם אני הגעתי לסכומים כאלו פחות או יותר:

במישיגן העלויות הם:

שכ"ד : 1500$ כולל חנייה מקורה – מדובר על בית גדול (3 חדרי שינה, 2 סלונים, גינה, 2 קומות ומרתף גדול). בחרתי ביית בסדר גודל כזה כי אני עם שני ילדים ורציתי שיהיה להם מרחב להשתולל בימי החורף הקרים והמושלגים (ויש הרבה כאלו). לרווקים.נשואים בלי ילדים, יש גם דירות קטנות באזור ה 750$ ותמיד גם אפשר לגור עם שותף.

ביטוח רפואי דרך האוניברסיטה : 650$ לחודש לכל המשפחה (אם אתה יחיד אתה משלם 90, נשוי מאה+ ועם ילדים לא חשוב כמה 650$).

אוכל – (גם ללא מסעדות ורק WALMART או SAMS CLUB וכו,) 1300$ לחודש.

גן יהודי (JCC) 1190$, בי"ס פרטי (יהודי) – 1280$) – צריך לזכור שזה לא כולל אוכל ולכן העלות היחסית גבוהה של אוכל.

טיסות לארץ כ1500$ לכרטיס.

חשמל, גז מיים כ 300$ לחודש.

כבלים + אינטרנט 70$ לחודש (החבילה הבסיסית, ללא HD ו DVR)

דלק כ100$ לחודש במחירים הנוכחיים של הדלק (ירד ביותר מ50% מהיום שהגעתי).

טלפון נייד 90$ לחודש לזוג (השתמשנו במכשירים שלנו מהארץ).

בגדים צעצועים כ 500$ בשנה

בילויים לילדים (בעיקר בחורף שכבר אי אפשר סתם ללכת לגינה) – 200$ לחודש.

ביטוח דירה 100$ לשנה, ביטוח רכב 800$ לשנה – דווקא במישיגן לא נתקלתי בבקשה לפקדונות (יש לי ויזת J וSSN אולי בגלל זה).

שכר לימוד שנתי – 45,000$

ספרים (אלו שחובה לרכוש לא כולל ספרות עזר) 350$ לשני הסימסטרים הראשונים.

ולכן גם אני הגעתי לעלויות של כ130,000$ לשנה.

מבחינת ההלוואות – כיום אף בנק אמריקאי לא מוכן להלוות לסטונדנט זר ללא ערב אמריקאי. בתי הספר מתחילים למצוא פיתרונות בעצמם אך כמו שנאמר הריבית תהייה הרבה יותר גבוהה (אנחנו לקחנו בפריים + 0%) יהיה APPLICATION FEE (לנו לא היה) של 5%-8% וההחזרים יהיו בתקופות קצרות.

עדיין אני מאמין שכשטיפה ירגע המצב הבנקים יחזרו להלוות.

כמו תמיד מי שמעוניין בעוד פרטים ספציפים לגבי מצבו אני זמין במייל שלי (מופיע בפרופיל).

last year i did a telephone interview with michigan and got in (actually all of us did only phone interviews).

the advantage is of course the lack of stress when you are at home and can have some notes in front of you.

the disadvantage is of course the lack of eye contact with the interviewer and for some of us our amazing israeli accent :).

anyway just try to be yourself and be prepared.

you'll all do fine.

In your response to the interview invitation, you should indicate that you are only available for a phone interview.

as I mentioned earlier they are doing extreem efforts to find Israeli's Alumnus to do the interview.

with that said i'm not sure there will be enough interviewers in order to interview all of you but you should all mention this when you respond to your interview invite by telling that it is an option which interests you.

some of them even got accepted.

Hi Naama,

Ross has a leading institue in the operation field called Tauber (http://www.tauber.umich.edu/index.htm).

you can decide to do an MBA with Operations Concentration (http://www.tauber.umich.edu/Program%20Details/mba_details.htm) and then you don't even have to look for an internship for the summer because they take care of it.

another option is to take only some of the courses as elecetives (both from the business school and from michigen College of Engineering) such as Sustainable Operations, Supply Chain Management or Project Management.

during the core curriculum you have to take Operations Management course on winter A semester.

they are aware of the problem and once they'll recieve your transcripts they will see that this is on a 0-100 scale.

in the online application you can just divide your grade by 25 and write it is a 4 point scale.

1. A dependant visa (J2 or F2) will be given onlt to your wife. you must be married before you come to the embbasy to request the visa.

2. it is very easy to get a J, all the married Israelis done it before without any problem. you just need to send your school a letter from a sponsor. there is a way to move from F to J but it is not so simple.

3. don't know anything about europe, sorry.

as long as the grade is 4 or higher.

I know that a toefl of 100 or more and an AWA of 4 or more is almost a must.

I know someone with a 3.5 taht was not accepted and on the feedback session he was told that this was on of the main reasons
