Do schools really care what Israeli applicants did in the army?

Many people in the forum seem to emphasize that they were Kravi, or Modiin or Maglan Tsanchanim etc. I get the sense that these nuances are completely irrelevant to a U.S. business school, unless perhaps you were a combat fighter pilot.

Even in my company here in Israel, when we look at resumes, we look for relevant experience (BSc in computers, JAVA, C++ etc.) The army service is window dressing about as important as "Hobbies" or Tnuot noar.

    Dear Orior,

Thanks for the tip about the Topscore website. I have a collection of websites which sell GMAT prep material. Topscore seems to be run by Indians. I could probably spend years just going through all the GMAT test prep material that's out there…

Does anyone have a clean (or relatively unmarked) copy of the Official GMAT Quantitative Review Book?

    I'm looking for a copy.

So far I have used the following material for self-study:

    ARCO Math Review

    Kaplan Math Review

    Official Guide- 11th Edition

    Manhattan GMAT Math Books

    All very useful…

This post probably belongs in the Career board, but no one checks there…

Can someone tell me the salary range in management consulting in Israel. Approx. how much do consultants at McKinsey, Accenture, etc. earn per month? What about the Iocal Israel strategy consulting firms? (Tasc, Teffen etc.)

My summary of last night's INSEAD meeting:

TASC Consulting's employees seemed very nice. The secretary at the reception desk was very warm and welcoming. (It was such a shock because I always encounter unpleasant secretaries in offices in Tel Aviv). I also spoke to a Principal at TASC who was very friendly. They are looking to hire more consultants. It seems like a consultancy with lots of potential for growth. Their competitive advantage is "Hire us because we're cheaper than the global strategy consultancies". They are using this to their advantage in Israeli and Eastern Europe, but it seems inevitable that they will merge or be swallowed by a larger firm.

INSEAD sent their new MBA marketing manager to deliver the presentation. She was a fantastic speaker. The INSEAD Alumni were all very happy with their experience. I must say that most of them were very vague about the tough ROI questions. The program costs are 45,000 Euro plus 2,000 Euro X 11 months for living expenses.

There seemed to be an even split of ex-lawyers and ex-engineers. Most of them work in high tech although there were one or two in VC or consulting in Israel.

Some of my favourite things: One INSEAD grad told about how he approached [Large Israeli Holding Company] and [Well-known controlling shareholder of said company] in 2001 to fund his INSEAD MBA. He received $10,000, and a promise of a job which never materialized because of the recession etc. so he ended up with the money with no strings attached!

One current INSEAD student spoke about living in Fontainbleu with his wife. I'm still a little unclear how people can afford to go with their wives and "send them shopping in Paris every weekend", or how students at the Singapore campus can fly to Thailand and Vietnam every weekend.

    Overall a great information evening.

    Dear Aviad,

I can perhaps answer your question from the opposite perspective… I studied law at McGill University in Canada and I came to Israel… Despite the fantastic reputation of the school, no one in Israel cared where I studied. The most important factor in my Israeli job search, was being a native-English speaker. I could have studied at the "University of Hicksville" – Beit Shean branch and no one would have cared.

Gilad's analogy to Argentina was perfect!!! Keep in mind that there are hundreds if not thousands of MBA programs in the U.S. and around the world, and every piddly university and college has the Chutzpah to offer "International MBA" and "Executive MBA" programs. It's unfortunate that the recruiters are unaware of the excellent education provided at Hebrew University, but they are unlikely to evaluate this degree any differently from an online MBA from Phoenix University, or that "Executive MBA" which they offer in Rishon Lezion from second tier City College of NY.

Because there is little value added in knowing Hebrew or having studied in Jerusalem, in the Canadian job market, you are best studying at one of the following places: McGill, Western, Queen's, University of Toronto, Harvard, Kellogg, HEC. Each school has its advantages and relative benefits to working in banking in Canada. If you want to work in Toronto, go to U of T or Western. If you want to work in Montreal, consider going to a French school such as HEC.

If you have a scholarship to the Hebrew U program, or if you can work full-time at an investment bank in Israel while you study, then I think you should consider staying in Israel. The job market in Tel Aviv is great for analysts and IB, especially if you have perfect English and experience from Chul. The grass always looks greener in Chul, but realistically if you complete the Hebrew U program and get into a good investment house in Tel Aviv, you can have a fantastic career here.

Tax deduction in Israel for foreign MBA tuition?

Hi, I wanted to ask if anyone has any personal experience deducting on their Israeli income tax, their foreign MBA tuition? I know there are new tax regulations which allow for a relatively small amount to be deducted for students at a clsoed list of Israeli colleges and universities. A part of my MBA finance plan, I wanted to work in Israel from Jan to August, and then start my foreign MBA in Sept. I want to deduct the first year tuition from the tax I pay in Israel for the first 8 months of the year.

    Thanks for your help…

    Dear Gilam,

Many of the MBA programs such as Harvard state that they only calculate undergraduate marks in order to determine a candidate's GPA. I think their rationale is that grad school marks tend to be "inflated". In my case my undergrad marks are great, but my grad school marks are low. The first semester of my Master's program my marks dropped so low that I was put on academic probation. I improved my grades and I went on to acheive academic excellence– I was published in several academic journals. How will top schools look at me? Will they ignore what happened because it was in grad school? Will the "stain" of being on probation prevent me from getting into top schools?

Also, can you give me an idea of the "worst" candidate GPA that you have successfully helped get into a top school?
