    Hi OK,

Even if the ugliest girl in the class thinks you are cute you should be flattered. And St. Gallen is not that ugly :-).
From the little I know about the school I would class it as a very good local school and a tier 2 or 3 European school (probably Top 15 in Europe). It has a good reputation in the country and even more so in the German speaking side.

As for working in Switzerland you could definitely do worst.Geneva and Zurich are constantly rated in the top 5 cities in the world for quality of living, salary and cost of living. There are loads of multinational companies from various industries including banks, insurance, financial institutes, industrial manufacturing, pharma, medical, tech and more.

and then you have those mountains and lakes and 3 hour trains to anywhere in central Europe… Ahhhh, I miss Switzerland :-)

    Hi Just,
The point of the question, which is asked by many schools, is to see a connecting thread between t he 'current' you, the IMD MBA, and your post MBA career, or at least the beginning of it.
The adcom knows that most people don't know exactly what they want and that many will change their minds 5 times anyway.
They do want to see that you thought about your skills and experience and what the IMD MBA will give you and how that is related to a certain function and industry. Keep in mind that the schools are partially measured on their ability to help their graduates get employed" hopefully in the field they are interested. That means that if your story makes mo sense it will raise a red flag…

as for practical advise, try being a bit specific when you talk about the next role and connect oft the school. For example, I think it's good to use examples or roles, even from companies that recruit in the school instead of keeping it vague. It's more realistic and thought through if you say you want to go to a general management rotation program in a manufacturing company like Schindler or Alcan instead of saying you want to go to marketing…

Hope this helps a bit, feel free to ping me back if you have further questions.

loads of luck, we need more good candidates for 2012!

I believe that is true to a certain extent. You will have all the big companies recruit at, let's say, Wharton and Berkley. But you might have a few smaller companies coming only to Berkley.. Another factor is that if you are close to the Valley, you can much easier network and reach out to people…

I suggest you talk with people who went to these schools to get a clearer insight – I am mainly extrapolating from my experience at IMD. We had companies coming from all over the place, and students went all over the world. However, we did have companies with HQ in our area that do not actively recruit in other places, or that know a lot about IMD because it's part of the local landscape. I spoke with a few Tech Funds that don;t really recruit MBAs at all, but they knew some of my Profs so I got a chance to talk with them.

I would not make a decision strictly on Geography, but if you KNOW you want to work in the Palo Alto then I would suggest putting Berkley and Stanford at the top of the list.

    Hope this helps,

    Dear Ice and economics,

Perhaps I can address a few of the points you are asking about.
First of all consulting – in my opinion the schools don't really 'prepare' you for the work as a consultant. Instead, they provide a general education and a diploma that consultancies like. You can get to any of the top consultancies from any of the top schools. I know INSEAD has a reputation for sending a lot of grads to that field and to accepting a lot of ex-consultants (many of whom go back to their old companies) but I really don't think you can go wrong with any of the schools on the list if that is what you want.

As for the rest, I think the main thing is where you want to work and live after your MBA. The top schools all have a network around the world and you can study in NYC and then work in Paris. However, the best network is typically closer to home. If you want to work in the states, go study there. If you prefer Europe, consider a European school.

Finally, the schools you list are all very different in what they offer. I suggest you figure out the geography issue and learn more about the schools. Berkley and Wharton, or IMD and IE, offer very different experiences from each other…

    Good luck,

    OYOY

I applied to IMD (first choice), IE (second choice) and LBS. I was surprised to hear how many of my fellow classmates (and alumni) actually apply only to IMD (but I didn't have the guts to do that…).

Please feel free to drop me a line at [email protected] and we can talk, or if you have some specific questions that can help other forum readers you can ask them here and I will reply with detail.

    Cheers,

why should it be a disadvantage?
There are people with PhDs who do an MBA as well…

As long as it fits with your previous career path it can only add to the skills and experience you bring to the class.

    Hi,

I am not a great expert on the admin process to those schools, so I would relay on the experts' opinion here. The only thing I can comment is that I don't believe the seniority of the 'recommender' is as significant as the content she/he provides and how it supports and enhances the details you provided in your application.

Good luck in your journey (and sorry I cannot add much more substance),

    Hi economics,

You sound like a very interesting candidate regardless of the school you chose. However, given your 'age' dilemma and career aspirations I would recommend you have a look at IMD. A school that is extremely strong in placement in industry, focuses on leadership and general management and targets "older" students with more work experience. If you do some research and find it interesting you can contact me with any questions about the school, process, etc.

One last small comment (or rather personal opinion) – If you really want to work in green energy, don't look for a job in an oil company. Even the ones investing in alternative energy do it as a marketing ploy and not as a true business focus. To really make it in Exxon / BP / Shell / Any other oil company, you need to go through the core business which is getting black stuff out of the ground. You can find much more suitable places to make an impact and have an interesting career in the green energy field.

Good luck and all the best,

    OYOY

    Hi Dan,

I think that your age will be less of a concern at IMD – the average age this year (class of 2009) was 31. Also your level of experience at work will fit the type of experience the other classmates have and thus what recruiters look for when coming to IMD.

I'll be glad to answer any further questions about IMD here or at the Kidum fair at the end of this month.

    Cheers,

I am a current student at IMD, graduating in a couple of weeks. I would be glad to answer any questions if you could be a bit more specific…

I had an incredible year in Lausanne and am quite sad it is ending, but some more direction would help me address your interests/concerns.

    Hi thereal,

As an IMD student I also wondered how come it 'flys under the radar' despite the quality of education, the career progress of the graduates and the rankings.

One reason was mentioned before – the MBA class is very small (90 students) which reduces the number of grads spreading the gospel. Every year there are 1 or 2 Israelis but it is still much lower than the numbers in any top US school or LBS/INSEAD. Many Israelis that plan to go back to Israel are looking for a school with a larger Israeli network.

Secondly, IMD's MBA class is only a small part of its revenue. Most of the money (and all of the profits) come from executive education and the marketing efforts go in that direction. Since the class size is limited IMD does not market to a broader scale, thus maintain some mystery around it (not sure if this is a good idea or not…).

In any case, I think the school offers things one cannot find in other schools in terms of personal approach, level of experience in the class and hands on projects.

If you have any further questions please feel free to reply. In any case, good luck with you journey ;-)

RE: the comment about IMD, it's true that the average age at IMD is always around 30, but it might be an exaggeration to claim we all know where we want to end up in.

I would assume that like most schools, some know and some don't. Many find their way during the program or refine their criteria.

However, the experience of the students and the general tendency towards industry positions (although there are always strong recruitment from the usual suspects like IB and MC) can be considered the students' distinction.

    Cheers,
(p.s. I am a current student at IMD)

    Hi nyasour,
The top cities for finance are London and New York (Tokyo, Hong Kong and Frankfurt are next). With the weak $ and the strong financial markets in europe London is on the rise (salaries, vacancies, prestige)

Since you are trying to change industries, some will claim that a longer program with the chance to do an internship is important. LBS offers a 15 – 21 month program (flexible) that covers that as well.

Just as a disclaimer, I am not an LBS student or alum. I just live in London and know how well regarded the financial markets and LBS are.

Living in Europe has all the advantages you mentioned plus your spouse will get a work visa (and the indian food is better).

    Good luck

    Hi YV,

I have been trying to get information about IESE beyond what they write in their website and have not succeeded. They refused to give me phones of students / alums so I dropped them off my radar for now.

Since you are applying to them I would love to talk to you and get your impression of them.

If you are interested, please contact me on [email protected].

I am currently planning on applying to IMD, IE and perhaps LBS with some (minimal) consideration to some schools in the US.

    Regards,

Finding a job in Spain after the MBA is not easy unless you are an EU citizen. The salary there is also not very exciting.

However, the top Spanish schools, and there are several very renowned ones, will open many doors for you if you are interested in working in Europe (and even in the US). It is a bit difficult to get an 'Israeli' perspective on theses schools because Israelis tend to go to INSEAD or LBS in Europe, but when it comes to reputation in the world IE, IESE and ESADE can be mentioned in the same breath (just look at some rankings).

Hope this helps a bit :-)

    To all Stanford-ers
I know it's a longshot, but I will be in SF area in a week's time and was wondering if there is any point of visiting the school. Are there any classes one can view, or any campus visits organized by the school during this time?

    Thanks in advance,

Renting a 'pet friendly' flat is not the main concern.
The big issue is if you can bring your dogs with you to that country.

From my experience in the UK with cats (probably valid for the rest of the EU as the regulations are usually similar) there is a 6 months quarantine period.

You can probably check these things with some veterinarian service in Israel. Hope this helps,OY

Senior Technical Consultant

studied computer science and economics at Tel Aviv U.
Final GPA in Economics – 95
Final GPA in CS – 90

I think that if I will have somthing specific I would ask. So far the only thing that comes to mind is: Do Israelis only target LBS and INSEAD in EU?
What about the Spanish schools (IE, IESE) or IMD for example?

sharing infromation, maybe learning a few things from other people's experience

    OYOY
