    Wangot,

Let me try to answer this question.

First, with enough focus and efforts during recruiting, ALL top schools will get you in the door for EVERY industry and job you want – the rest is up to you. The higher the school is ranked the easier it is to get in the door, especially in down markets.

Second, even for top schools location is important. Yes – if you want to work in NYC, an East Coast school would be better. If you want to work in the Mid-West (Pepsico, Kraft, Abbott, Motorola) schools such as the GSB and Kellogg would be better and I would not be surprised if Michigan and Indiana would also be better for this purpose than CBS or NYU or even H/S/W. I am not sure why you say marketing jobs are clustered around NYC. If you are interested in a high-tech marketing job they are clustered in the West Coast. Texas offers a lot of energy related jobs. Boston biotech. Nevertheless, NYC is the biggest so it offers a lot of everything. NYC is not for everyone – make sure it is for you (weather, cost-of-living, people, etc.).

Third, if your mind is set on a specific company, make sure it recruits at your school of choice. For example, L’Oreal does not recruit at the GSB (HBS, for example, is very strong there). It is practically impossible to get in the door there with alumni protecting their alma mater.

Forth, there is nothing wrong about being analytical and quantitative. You would be surprised how quantitative marketing could be, especially in industries that are data driven and which conduct a lot of market research. Think about your strengths and weaknesses. I came from a legal background and was quite comfortable with my soft skills. I wanted to strengthen my quantitative skills. Although graduating from the GSB I cannot claim to be a quant, but no one doubts my capabilities. Sometime perception is as important as reality :-)

Fifth, look at the GSB placement reports and see how many people go into strategy/marketing. There are a lot of those! We are also very strong in consulting and a lot of consultants end up (after 2-3 years) in strategy/marketing rolls.

Lastly, base your school choice about fit. Talk with students and alumni and try to visit. You would be surprised how easy it is to see where you do/don’t belong.

Although most of the Israeli students are already in Chicago and would welcome you, ROSH HASHANA is not a good time to visit the GSB as “real” school only starts on September 24. Don’t make short cuts, if you really want to visit do it at the right time.

    I hope this helps.Savyon

Congratulations to the three second round recipients of the Dennis W. and Jane B. Carlton Fellowship.

Altogether, this year, four fellowships were granted!

The pool of applicants was particularly competitive this year. The Committee had to make some very difficult decisions, and your selection among a group of outstanding students recognizes the fit between Chicago GSB and your interests, talents, and passion for the growth and development of Israel.

The Carlton Fellowship covers full tuition for the two years of attendance at the GSB, plus a $15,000 stipend each year. The Carlton Fellowship is a loan program. The loan will be forgiven if the recipient returns to Israel within five years of completing the MBA degree.

    Kobi,

Out of the 12 Israelis in my class four are in top 3 consulting, three in technology management, one in CPG and four in finance (IM/HF, IB and S&T).

All top BSchools are very diverse with the career opportunities they offer.

Visiting schools, as you are doing, is the best way to get rid of unsubstantiated stigmas and biases.

    Wishing you the best,

    Kobi,

As you already plan to be in the Chicago area (visiting Kellogg) you are more than welcomed to think about adding the Chicago GSB to your list.

Your timing is perfect and is right in the middle of the spring quarter. Students are relaxed after securing their summer/FT jobs and would be happy to show you around.

    Michal,

Under Gilam's assumptions and with the "right" story, you will be a strong candidate at the Chicago GSB.

Interesting article about the medical-device industry.

    The (second) worst deal ever
In the biggest M&A blunder since AOL/Time Warner, Boston Scientific paid too high a price to snatch Guidant away from archrival Johnson & Johnson. Here's how it happened.

    I strongly agree with Shahar.

APROPO Sandy from BW, he once suggested that it is important to visit CBS b/c they take attendance and factor it in the admissions decision. According to Sandy, almost everyone applies to CBS, so ED and visits are their way to figure out who is serious about the school. I don't know how true this is, but Sandy usually knows his stuff.

As a former member of the admissions committee I know that there is absolutely no record of your visit at the GSB. However, I would strongly encourage applicants to visit, as there are lot of misconceptions in Israel about the GSB and the city of Chicago.

It would be best to plan a two days visit: Thursday morning/afternoon in downtown Chicago, including the Magnificent Mile, the Gleacher Center (our down town facility), the Millennium Park, dinner with one (or more) of the Israeli students (or Alumni) and off to TNDC (our weekly party). On Friday morning do the school-tour, attend two classes and end with our afternoon LPF (weekly get together of students, faculty, staff and alumni in the presence of lot’s of food and drinks).

Best time to visit the GSB (or any other school) would be from now until the end of October. US winter is much less fun than the beautiful autumn.

    Nothing happens.

It is probably one of the most expensive insurance policies you will ever buy.

I know of many Israeli applicants (including myself) that were accepted ED, paid the deposit, and chose a different school.

By playing this game CBS invites such conduct.

    Hi Hila,

Last year I was on Stern's wait list w / interview.

I have sent an additional letter (which was edited by current students) + 2 additional rec. letters + had 2 students speek on my behalf + had a prof. speek on my behalf + I went to an alumni meeting and spoke with their Dean. There were approx. 8 additional Israelis on the WL.

They had me on the WL until the end of Aug. They even called me to check my status. I, of course, shouted enthusiastically. IF YOU SAY YES – I'LL COME!!!

NADA, GURNISHT!! No one got in from the WL.

All this story is to let you realize that Stern puts lots of people on their WL, and play the yield game like every other school, and then some.

    Good luck

The following answer by Sandy – the "application guru" – was taken from the BusinessWeek forums. Good luck.

    =================================================

    Sandy:

Whats your advice for an Round 1 MIT Sloan Waitlist? I had heard Sloan likes Alums lobbying for wl'ed folks.=============

agree, Sloan is open to lobbying by alums, current students, big wigs, etc. and also by the candidate: like all such porous systems, there is no program available, you just have to use your best judgment, be lucky, and have supporters both write and call WL managers and Rod to some degree. Current students can write messages, alums can write letters. Sloan believes, but cannot really overtly admit, that the class to some degree selects itself, and lobbying is proof of commitment.

CBS: applied 21/9 ED; admitted 3/12. interviewed last year (reapplicant).

Chicago GSB: applied: early October; interviewed: early September (on campus); admitted: 11/1 (call from the Don). reapplicant (WL R2).

I am the other guy that got into the GSB.

Was also admitted to CBS. As my wife will be interviewing for medical residency positions in the US (NYC + NJ + Chicago), it will be up to her to decide where we go.

I have already visited the CBS + GSB twice, and having a very hard time choosing between these two great schools (with a slight favour towards the GSB). I think I would fit better in the GSB (the most amazing students I have seen, and I visited lot's of schools), but as a family man, it is not my only concern.

Ex-lawyer. Political Ex. 710. 293. 3.3. Reapplicant (waitlisted R2). It is all about the essays.
