I read all the last messages in this thread and I believe all posts have some very good points. I can comment on each and every one of them but I think this is a discussion that could last until the summer.

My point is that although it's extremely hard this year, business schools, especially in the top 20, will not allow a low percentage of students who got jobs for the summer and will do whatever it takes to protect their reputation. The bottom line for those schools is recruitment and low percentage has severe implicatoins on the school rep. Still, it is probably not the right time to look for a career switch and the years in which MBA candidates could pick whatever job they wanted looks like a far dream. The condition just make you be more industry focused, know exactly what you want to do, prove that you can do it better than fellow Americans, and than just go fot it. It takes a lot of effort but it's certainly far from being impossible.

Bottom line- until the end of May 90% of the Israelis will have an offer for the summer. I'm saying 90% just to stay on the safe side, as I'm pretty sure it'll be more towards the 100%. Anyone for a bet?

I will be in Israel next week and would like to host a small informal information session about the Tuck Business school at Dartmouth. I wish to take the chance to know some of you, tell you about my experiences as a student and answer your questions about Tuck, Dartmouth, the application procedure, and anything else you wish to discuss. It would be probably either Sunday the 21st or Monday the 22nd. From my experience, informal sessions are the best way to know a school (besides the visit itself…), the culture and some real students experience.

You can definitely ask to conduct an interview in Israel. If one of the alumni in Israel is available you will surely have that option. Saying that, I recommend you to come to campus before applying. Beside the option to interview it would give you a chance to take a glimpse on the school culture and the area. I can tell you that I had a hard decision which school to attend, and what tipeed the scales for me was visiting B schools. It can turn your decision either way but it is highly important to know where you're applying to. Also. it would give you superb material for the 'Why Tuck' essay.

My name is Ariel and I am a student at Tuck Business School at Dartmouth, Class of 2010. This year there are 6 Israelis, the largest number ever attended Tuck. We come from different backgrounds, different family status and different experiences. I encourage you to post your questions about the school, the Tuck spirit, the upper valley area and anything else comes into mind. Some of us are very active in this forum (students and alumni, find us anywhere in this thread) so please feel free to post to any of us.

Tuck has a great reputation in the US as a top tier business school, and is a constant factor in every TOP10 ranking of the major business magazines. The school atmosphere is highly collaborative and the different backgrounds of the class members create a unique and special community. The curriculum is rigorous and is very demanding, but I can tell you that after 3 weeks at Tuck I learned more than ever about business, analyzing methods etc.. About the bottom line, recruitment opportunities, I suggest you read the data in Tuck website. It is highly impressive. One of the reasons for that is the amazing alumni network that is much more than what it sounds. Actually, the Tuck alumni is one of the major factors in Tuck recruitment opportunities. The school is located in Hanover NH, which is a small quiet town. the fact that the town is small emphasize us, the students, and makes the town look like one big university.

I could go on forever and I'm here for only a month… so as I mentioned, feel free to ask any question you have. We will be glad to help.

הנסיון שצברת עד עכשיו יכול להתבטא הרבה יותר טוב ממה שאתה חושב. זה תלוי מאוד בצורה שבה תציג את זה, איך תראה את ההתפתחות המקצועית שלך (צבא -> לימודים -> הייטק -> התנדבות ניהולית-מקצועית…). לצורך זה יש חיבורים שבאים להראות מי אתה באמת. פרט לכך, שני התארים שאתה עושה במקביל בוודאי לא יזיקו מבחינת ועדת הקבלה כשיבחנו את היכולות שלך. מהיכרות אישית עם הממוצעים בטכניון, אני מניח שבפקולטה למדעי המחשב הציונים שלך ב- 20% העליונים עם הצטיינויות דיקן. גם זה יכול להיות admission driver טוב. הרקע ההתנדבותי חשוב מאוד, ובמקרה שלך הוא מצוין כי הוא משלב בתוכו אלמנטים של ניהול ומנהיגות. נסיון בעבודה של אחרי הלימודים לא תמיד יחזק את מועמדותך אם אין בו רקע מנהיגותי או ניהולי.

בסופו של דבר, הדבר החשוב הוא לאו דווקא מה עשית אלא איך אתה מציג את מה שעשית.

Stretch– מועמדים עם פרופיל ונתונים דומים לשלך בד"כ אינם מתקבלים לתכנית (דגש על בד"כ).
Competitive– ועדת הקבלה תהסס או תתקשה להחליט באם לקבל אותך לתכנית.
Strong– סיכויים גבוהים להתקבל לתכנית, ייתכן עם מילגה משמעותית.

Alumni– בוגרי תכניות, סטודנטים לשעבר שבמרבית בתיה"ס מהווים רשת בוגרים חזקה ששומרת על קשר עם בתה"ס.

אני נמצא פחות או יותר באותן התלבטויות כמוך. ממה שאני הבנתי, לסמוך על האוניברסיטאות שימצאו עבור בן/בת הזוג עבודה, זה יותר wishful thinking . אל תבנה על זה כדבר בטוח. יחד עם זאת, יש התעוררות בנושא לאחרונה, ותכניות מובילות מפרסמות את כל הפעילויות ל significant other, כנראה כדי לא להפסיד את המועמדים בעלי המשפחות. בד"כ מדובר על פעילויות חברתיות אבל למיטב ידיעתי אף תכנית לא עוסקת באופן קונקרטי בנושאי מציאת עבודה. רצוי להיות פרואקטיבי עד כמה שתוכל.

בנוגע לויזות, אם תקבל ויזת F , בת זוגך לא תוכל לעבוד או ללמוד (מלבד קורסים שחלק מהאוניברסיטאות מאפשרות ל- spouse ללמוד בהן). ויזת J תאפשר לעבוד וללמוד (בתנאים מסוימים). בכל מקרה, יש באתר thread בנושא ויזות שכדאי להיכנס אליו.

אני יכול לומר לך שמהמידע שהצלחתי לאסוף עולה כי דווקא התכניות הפחות גדולות כביכול ב- TOP 20 הן בעלות מעורבות יותר גדולה בחיי המשפחה של הסטודנט. כדאי לך לשוטט באתרים של התכניות כדי ללמוד על מה שמציעה כל תכנית בנושא.

האם תוכל לתת קצת יותר נתונים על ההרצאות בהן ביקרת? מספר סטודנטים בכיתה, השתתפות הסטודנטים (מקשיבים בלבד או נוטלים חלק פעיל), איכות המרצים וכו'. ובנוסף, האם הרגשת בכל אוניברסיטה את ה- school spirit לה ציפית? האם דיברת עם זוגות נשואים לגבי אפשרויות תעסוקה ל- spouse?

בכל אופן, אני מתלבט באותן בעיות פחות או יותר לגבי אשתי, ולמרות כל מה שנכתב באתרי התכניות על ה- significant other, זה לא ממש נשמע כמו משהו שאפשר לבנות עליו. כדי לקבל פרספקטיבה קצת אחרת קרא את הלינק המצורף. שם המאמר הוא " Can your relationship survive B-School" והמשפט הראשון במאמר הוא חתיכת פנץ' ליין- 'There's a reason the MBA has eaened a reputation as "the divorce degree"'.
