    Ronnie,

I didn't take a class. I hired a math student from Tel Aviv University for 90-100 NIS per hour. The hardest part is finding a math teacher in Israeli who is comfortable teaching GMAT math in English.

If you want a class take the GMAX class.

I just read the series of controversial postings about using a commercial company fo help with essays. I wrote my essays by myself in the car while driving from Tel Aviv to Eilat. It took another morning by the poolside to polish them. But writing English essays is my strength.

On the other hand, I spent lots of money on math tutors for the GMAT. I am spending more now on studying stats before schools starts.

There's nothing wrong with spending money if it helps you acheive your goals.

    Dear YZYZ

Your calculation of the number of Israelis accepted might overcount the numbers… I applied as a "Canadian" and Broadreach might have applied as an "American".

If you have an offer from MIT, you should take it… It's a fantastic choice!

Okay, so here's the deal… On Monday Epony gets a phone call informing him that he's been accepted to INSEAD. By pure coincidence, I happen to work in the same office building as Epony, although I've never met him, and I don't know what he looks like!

Since I heard on Monday that Epony was in, I've been VERY anxious. Why haven't they contacted me to accept or reject me, or even waitlist me?

I finally broke down yesterday and I wrote an e-mail to INSEAD… here is the e-mail thread (I deleted the names for privacy):

    Subject: Application Decision?

    Dear ********,
I would like to know if INSEAD has made an admissions decision on my candidacy yet?

Some of my friends have already received answers for Round 2. I am very much interested in attending INSEAD.

    Sincerely,
    **********************

    Dear ********,

Further to your e-mail, I would like to let you know that we are sending out the final decisions and I have the big pleasure of informing you that you have been admitted to the MBA Programme. You should receive hopefully tomorrow a confirmation of that.

    Congratulations!

    Warm Regards,

    ********

Do you know any Israelis who went to INSEAD, but left their partners in Israel for the year?

    INSEAD R2 Interview Report

I had my second INSEAD interview with another female graduate who works in the public sector. We met in the lobby of a hotel that is sometimes patronized by mafia members, but is otherwise a nice place. Just like my first interview, because English is my native language, we spoke Hebrew for the whole interview. The interview lasted 1.5 hours.

This interview was much tougher than the first one. The interviewer set a very casual and friendly tone, but then set me up for some difficult questions. I walked into some traps that I hadn’t expected. Her questions were focused… when I gave examples of successful work projects or volunteer activities, she didn’t smile, but instead countered with serious questions: “What was your role in the project?”, “Would you say that you were the leader in the project?” “What would your colleagues say about you?”

We didn’t spend a lot of time talking about my professional experience and the dynamic of my workplace. In my first interview, there was a lot more discussion about my interaction with bosses etc.

I got the sense that she was new at being an INSEAD alumni interviewer, and was more “business-like” than some other interviewers who tend to relax during the meeting. The most interesting piece of information she gave me during the interview, was her emphasis on the psychology and career counseling at INSEAD. She felt that the school was very good at helping students explore their ‘inner self’ and discover what career goals they want to set for themselves.

After the interview I went home and drank a glass of red wine to relax after a long day.

    INSEAD R2 Interview Report

I had my first INSEAD interview with a female graduate who works in the public sector. We met in her office for 1.5 hours. Because English is my native language and she didn't need to test my English, I asked to speak Hebrew for the whole interview. There might be a lesson here– if you and the interviewer are both Israeli, it might be a good idea to insist on speaking English for the entire interview, just to impress the interviewer.

We spent an hour talking about my work experience. She didn't have a background in my industry (pharmaceuticals) but we spoke a lot about cultural differences in Israeli culture as it relates to the workplace. She was fairly balanced about whether doing an overseas MBA is worth it. The consistent message was that you will need to work in Europe or the U.S. a few years to justify the return on investment, although in her case, she turned down a job in Europe and came back for personal reasons.

About half the Israeli INSEAD alumni I've met decided to come back immediately after graduation because they: 1) Want to marry an Israeli/Jewish partner; 2) Want to be close to their parents and family; 3) Have a wife/husband who insists on being close to her/his family.

Towards the end of my interview, she focused on the standard INSEAD interview questions. "Where do you see yourself in 5/20 years?" "What can you contribute to the program" etc. etc. I had heard these questions from other members here in the MBA Chances forum, so I had already tried to cover these questions in my casual discussion with the interviewer.

At the end of the interview she asked me to let her know if I decide to study at INSEAD which is always a good sign that the interview went well. After the interview I went to the Dizengoff Center.

My INSEAD R2 Interviews- All female interviewers!

I just received the names of my Israeli alumni interviewers– I expected they would be men who work in high tech… I was surprised to learn that they are both women who work in the public sector in unbelievably incredible positions. This supports the idea that INSEAD is a diverse place in terms of student body and career potential.

I wanted to comment on the messages on the Ask Aringo forum. The feedback is usually helpful, but I have some concerns:

People sometimes get carried away with trying to get Gilam's "Gushpanka" approval. Gilam is the most experienced admissions consultant in Israel, but his feedback in the forum is only one person's opinion. There's a danger in reading too much into it.

Sometimes the interactions are akin to Tarot card readings or like asking your best friend in high school, "Am I pretty?" In particular the ranking of candidates as "Competitive" or "Stretch" is VERY subjective. My fear is that some viable candidates might be scared off by the assessments and forego applying to Harvard, Wharton, INSEAD etc. just because one person discouraged them.

The last time I renewed my Israeli passport, I mentioned to the Misrad Hapnim clerk that I was thinking of visting Beirut on my foreign passport. (This was long before the war last summer). The clerk almost had a seizure on the spot!

Hey if Elchanan Tenenbaum can travel there to sell drugs, I think it's only fair to go there for an INSEAD interview.

    Dear Epony,

I also received an e-mail notifying me of a R2 interview at INSEAD. You can call me if you want to practice with each other before the interviews. I'm a native English speaker.

    LLB

    ציון ה- GMAT שלי: 710

: כבר הגשתי בקשה לתוכנית ה-MBA של INSEAD SEP 2007

I would like to continue in the pharmaceutical industry.

    אז בהצלחה לכולם,

I received my official score report today… 710 (94th percentile) weighted heavily towards verbal. I'm a native English speaker, so I actually scored 99% in verbal (top 1 percent) and "6" on the essays. I performed so-so on the quantitative. I'd be happy to help anyone with English questions, but I'm not an English teacher so I can't always explain why an answer just "sounds right".

I studied for many month to improve my math score using the following material:

    1) Kaplan GRE/GMAT Math Workbook

    2) ARCO GRE/GMAT Math Workbook

    3) Official GMAT Guide 11th Edition

    4) Official GMAT Quantitative Guide 10th Edition

    5) Manhattan GMAT Math Study Guides (highly recommended!!!)

    6) Official GMAT Prep software

I really had no math background, so I found the Kaplan and ARCO books good places to start. The Manhattan GMAT books are incredible. I ordered everything from Amazon.

I considered taking a course, and I actually went to visit some of the classes in Tel Aviv but I decided to study alone. At one point I did hire a private tutor (90 Shekels/hour).

There's tons of online GMAT material, some good, some mediocre. The problem is that much of the material of not exactly the same as real GMAT questions.
