ה- TOEFL משמש כרף לבדיקת רמת האנגלית של המועמד. אם יש ביכולתך להוכיח רמת אנגלית מספקת לא צריכה להיות בעיה. במקרה שלך עושה רושם שהכמותי ב GMAT מצוין, אבל האנגלית בינונית. אם יש לך דרכים אחרות להראות שליטה באנגלית (מגורים או עבודה בחו"ל, תקשורת באופן קבוע מול גורמים בחו"ל) וכיוב' מה טוב. אם לא, הייתי מצרף מכתב נוסף שמסביר למה ה TOEFL נמוך. בהחלט יתכן אגב שאם תקח TOEFL במועד מאוחר יותר ותשלח לועדת הקבלה הם יתחשבו בזה. בכל מקרה, המטרה שלך היא להגיע לראיון – המראיין ירצה לראות שהשליטה שלך באנגלית מספיקה בשביל ליצור תקשורת ברמה גבוהה. אם תרשים אותו ביכולות מילוליות לא תהיה בעיה.

The three students come from very different backgrounds. One of them has background in hi-tech and is interested in product management, others are interested in finance or consulting.
However, the main point is just to make the school want you enough – they just give the scholarships to the people that the school feels will contribute the most to the class.

All,

The Chicago GSB conference in Israel can also be a great opportunity for MBA candidates to meet current and former MBA students (there will be at least 5 current students attending as well as a number of alums) and to hear about the experience of studying and working abroad. Moreover, it could be a good place to hear about different career routes (banking, consulting, corporate, hi-tech etc.) and to start building the Israeli professionals network.

The schools are actually doing more background checks than ever. This was started by Wharton two years ago, and adopted by most schools. I would still not be worried about that. Plenty of candidates have the same issue, and the schools are careful enough. Make sure your recommender knows that he recommended you though…

סיון,

הגישה בארה"ב ללימודים היא באמת כמו השקעה/משכנתא. זה משהו שמחזיר את עצמו בטווח הארוך. אין מה לחפש החזר השקעה תוך שנתיים שלוש, כי לא סביר שזה יקרה. חלק גדול מהסטודנטים מממנים את התואר בהלוואות ל 20 שנה, ואני מאמין שהיכולות, הידע והנסיון שצוברים תוך כדי הלימודים, יחזירו את ההשקעה הכספית בטווח הבינוני.

אין ספק שהחוויה עצמה היא מדהימה, ושאין לה תחליף בארץ.

אני רוצה להוסיף לתשובה של גלעם.

בבחירת בית ספר חשוב להסתכל על מספר גורמים: החשוב שבהם לדעתי הוא החברות שמגייסות on campus . תסתכלי על רשימת ה- recruiters שמגיעה לבתי הספר. ברגע שמקינזי מגיעים לקמפוס, לא אכפת להם מאיזה בית ספר את. (יש בתי ספר עם יותר סטודנטים שמקבלים הצעות מחברות בתחום מסויים. בהרבה מקרים המספרים מוטים מכיוון שיש הרבה סטודנטים שהגיעו מאותן חברות ופשוט ממשיכים שם, או עוברים מחברה אחת לשניה באותו תחום)

לגבי הקורסים – אני לוקח קורס מעולה ב Marketing Strategy, שמבוסס על קייסים של הארוורד (כמעט כל בתי הספר משתמשים באותם קייסים). בסמסמטר הקרוב אני לוקח קורס ב pricing strategy. צריך להבין שבשביל להתקבל לתפקידי אסטרטגיה חשוב להבין במספר תחומים: Marketing, Operations, חשבונאות, כלכלה ומימון בסיסיים לפחות. כך שחשוב לראות שבית הספר מציע מגוון רחב של קורסים.

אחד הדברים שעוזרים לי בשיקגו הוא דווקא ה flexible curriculum – העובדה שאני יכול לבחור איזה קורסים לקחת, וככה בעצם להתמקד בקורסים שיעזרו לי למצוא עבודה בתחום שלי (ייעוץ, אסטרטגיה).

Shirli (&Dan),

I believe you actually should get married. Entering on a tourist Visa and then switching to H-1 (work) visa is not easy. Having a work permit would make his life much easier.

Dan – in order to get either F-2 or J-2 you have to get married. Someone told me that being engaged might be enough, if you have a wedding date, but I've never checked it myself.

אני מציע לקרוא את החומר באתר של הקונסוליה האמריקאית. אבל בקצרה – צריך לצרף לבקשת הויזה מכתב מחברה שאומר הם מוכנים לממן חלק מהותי ממחיר הלימודים. למיטב ידיעתי זה ההבדל היחיד בין F ל – J מבחינת התהליך.

סטודנטים שהוציאו ויזת J מוזמנים להוסיף או לתקן.

Shai,

I believe that the majority of Israeli students at the GSB (there are currently 15 Israeli students) are on a J-1 visa. I never heard of any problem getting one. The only diffrence is that you have to attach a letter from a company saying that they are willing to sponsor part of your tuition fees.

I'm not sure what you mean by schools not sponsoring your J-1. The school will not sponsor your J-1. You have to find a company that will agree to issue a letter that claims that they sponsor you.

Furthermore, you get the I-20 or DS2019 back in Israel, before you come to the states. So the only fee you pay is a relatively small (Chicago – $1000) deposit.

Again, I never heard of someone really trying to get a J visa that has not been successful. I would recommend consulting with someone who already went through that process or with a lawyer who is familiar with the immigration regulations in the States.

Hello Dan and Shirli,

I would like to add one thing. If Shirli applies to a J-1 Visa (which is really easy to get) her significat other can obtain a J-2 visa and get a work permit based on that. In this case, I would support her decision to apply to schools in big cities.

However, as I read through the forum, it seems like most people would just apply to the "big names". I admit doing the same thing last year, when I was applying, but once you're in the states things do look different. Before you apply, try to gain the "American" perspective on things, because that's what matters, when you're looking for a job post-MBA.

I would agree that in most schools round I provides higher acceptance rates. However, round I applicants are typically considered stronger and thus it is not necessarily easier to be accepted in round I.

כעקרון לרוב המקומות פחות חשוב איפה את לומדת, ויותר חשוב איפה את ממוקמת בכיתה. הם מחפשים אנשים מצטיינים, ולכן עדיף מיקום טוב בכיתה במכללה, על פני מיקום פחות טוב באוניברסיטה.

כמובן, צריך לזכור שהרבה מכללות בארץ הן ברמה גבוהה, בטח לא פחות מבתי הספר בארה"ב (תואר ראשון – מבחינה אקדמית).

עם חיבורים טובים ודגש על leadership, פוליטיקה, או כל מה שאת טובה בו, זה לא יהווה חסרון.

מה שכן… אם את באמצע תואר ראשון – חכי קצת. נדיר מאוד שאנשים יתקבלו ללא תואר.
