    Dear Tomer –
Yes, Stanford intends to have an information session in Tel Aviv this coming October. Date and location will be announced later. Derrick Bolton who is our dean of admissions is planning a visit to Tel Aviv for this purpose. In addition, we will be included in a full bright conference this August. I dont have date and location for that conference but I emailed our admissions office asking for them and i will update this post once i get an answer.

    Good luck

Oren – the MBA school year is already done and now they have all sorts of executive summer sessions. I believe they dont offer any tours now, but you should check in the school's website. You can obvioulsy go and walk around and even drop by the admissions office, take a brochure and ask questions. I am not sure you will really get much out of this now…. when i came to visit i enjoyed interacting with current students and sitting in a class .

If you get a chance, i highly recommend coming during the school year. The admissions office offers many opportuniites to know the school better – tours, lunch with current students, admissions info sessions and auditing classes. All of this is done during the school year and you should register for it online.

Hope you can make it on another occasion
    Good luck

Yair – you are welcome to contact me by email ([email protected]) – if your questions are relevant also to other people who want to apply – you should post on the forum, so that others can benefit as well.

Looking forward to hearing from you

    Saar –

I can speak about work life balance and family in business school for hours… let me try and summarize here for the benefit of everyone.
Feel free to email me with more questions.

i found the atmosphere to be very family friendly. My husband and kids were very much part of my expereince. There is a strong feeling of community and your family is welcome as well.
Living on campus has its advantages: your family meets other families in similar situation, its closer, cheaper and very convinient. But even if you choose to live off campus, your family will be welcome.
There is a club called Biz partners which is run by SO (significant Others) and had mostly activities for the SOs, SOs are present in all social events and are welcome to some lectures as well.

There is also a singles crowd for those who are interested.

In terms of balance – you will always not have enough time as you would like to to spend with your family and at the same time – you would never have as much time as you would like to work/study…. you have to final your spot of comfort and school is not that different than work. I sometimes found it even easier to balance becasue i could do the school work from home with the presence of my family….

I am sure Avishai already adressed the financial questions….California is not the cheapest place to live in….

Hope this is helpful and thanks for your kind words.

For all of those who are applying to Stanford, or actually to any school, I would like to offer an advice which is based on feedback I received from our admissions office:

If school X is not your number one choice – DONT say in your application it is. If you said it is and you plan to eventually go somewhere else because circumstances change – make sure school X knows about the change in circumstances.

It seems trivial, it seems that this should be part of the "dont lie in your application" rule, right? Unfortunatly sometimes candidates tend to write that school X is their number one choice even when it is no, with hope that this will increase their admissions chances.

Please be aware that everything you do reflects also on Israelis as a group and if more than one Israeli says school X is their number one choice and this information turns out to be false, admissions might start having doubts about the integrity of Israelis as a group.

We are working hard here to create good brand for Israeli applicants and to increase the number of Israelis who are admitted every year and it is a bit frustrating to face concerns about the integrity of Israeli applicants just becasue a few wrote that a school is their first choice when it was not true.

    Think of the next generations!!
    Good luck

hi Gal – I am an alumna and was on the mailing list of the media and entertainemnt club of my class (which is not what you are looking for) – a good friend of mine was the media and entertainment club's co-president while in Stanford and i am happy to put you in touch with him or send him some of your specific questions.

From what i remember/know the club organized a career trek to LA and a yearly conference in which many students, alumni and local businessmen participated.

I was the co-president of the Travel & Hospitality club and we co-sponsored a guest speaker with the media & Entertainment club.

Happy to give more info or connect you with the right people.

    Itai hi –
I am not a current student, but i recommend signing up for one or more of many activities offered by admnissions on the web site. Youc an register for a class visit or a lunch with current students. Youc an also find there information about MBA info session which is held in the GSB and a GSB tour as well as Stanford tour.

i recommend signing up in advance as space is limited. Your spouce could sign up for a class visit as well. In addition you should also try to connect with current Israeli students. (i will make sure they see this mesage)

    Crocop,

The essays should reflect who you are and give more depth and color to what the admission office reads in your resume. Trying to depict a profile you think the school is looking for – would be wrong, especially if it is not who you are.

To the point, I don't think there is a specific type of people the school is aiming for. One of the admissions criteria is diversity – so you can imagine most of the admitted students are different from each other.

One thing that is common to people I have met in Stanford, is that they are all exceptional in so many ways. They are also really fun to be around..

My 2 recommendations for the essays are 1) make sure you take enough time to write them. You have no idea how long it takes. The writing itself is not the long part, but it took me more time than i thought it would to come up with an answer i was happy with. Also, don't start writing immediately . Take time to reflect and process your ideas.
    2) Make your essays as honest as can be. Show who you are. Let your personality shine though the pages

    Good luck

I cant do the "homework" for you….. your questions are too general

I recommend reading everything on Stanford's web site, reading old messages in this forum, signing up for the admissions newsletter, reading online about SF, attending the MBA forum on Dec 28th etc.

Once you have more specific questions, or if you could not find the answer to your questions elsewhere, I would be happy to help.

For me, the 2 years i spent in Stanford were the most exciting years ever. I felt i am surrounded by a big and warm family, that everyone is so smart and interesting and that i have a unique opportunity to be in this mind blowing environment.

i am not sure this is what you were asking….

    Itamar hi –

I am sorry for the delay, but i just saw your post….

I think that it is a question of fit. Stanford was amazing for me. The most important aspect of the fit for me, was the culture. When i came to visit in admit weekend, I immediately felt at home. I liked the collaborative spirit and the "Can do" attitude.

There are obviously other reasons…. and i think you should explore more and find out why Stanford is this the best school for YOU

    hope this helps

I did not guide any of the tours but I took many prospective students to my classes.

If you have to choose between the activities and cant do all, i think the information session would prove more usefull and you can walk around the school by yourself. if you have the time, do all of them, it should provide a lot of info you can use in your application and in understanding if the school is the right fit for you

    Irina hi –

I am a recent alumna (class of 2006).

If you plan to come and visit in Stanford, i recommend taking advantage of some of the programs our admissions office offers to prospective students.

    You can

    (1) Go on a tour of the business school, guided by a current MBA student (or tour the entire campus if you prefer)

    (2) Join an information session about the MBA

    (3) Go to lunch with current students

    (4) Join current students to a class

    Read more here http://www.gsb.stanford.edu/mba/outreach/on_campus_events.html

You should check availability and register in advance online. If you prefer meeting with Israeli students, you can email the admissions email after you register online and they will try to help.

Also, once you have a date for your visit, I would love to help and put you in touch with current Israeli students and meet with you myself, if I will be available.

When you are visiting, students that you will meet would usually give you their contact info. You can also email students' clubs with specific questions concerning their clubs (emails can be found online). My recommendation is that you will be prepared with VERY SPECIFIC questions which are relevant to the student you are approaching.

    Good luck

    To clarify:

My point was that if you dont apply, your admission chances drop to zero. I am not discouraging any research, i just think that the research should be around the school and why is it the best fit for you (if it really is). I would hate it if Stanford would lose worthy applicants jusr because they think they don't have a chance.

….and by the way, as Zefkp mentioned before, if we count Israelis that currently live in the US, we can expect 10 Israelies in the class of 2008 (out of which 3 are girls)

    Apply !!!

Research about the school, not about chances……

If it is your natural choice, just apply.

Worse that can happen is you spend time writing the application (which was a fun process itself… the Stanford essay question is different than other schools)

Best that can happen is you get in and get a chace to spend 2 truly amazing years here.

To me, the upside is so much more valuable than the cost of the downside, so I recommend applying regardless of your GMAT.

I applied although I was sure there is no chance I will get in. Actually thinking about it, all of my friends here, Israelis, Americans and Internationals, did not think they will get in

I am so glad to hear our posts sparked more interest in the school…

I don't know where to start… the collaborative culture, the truly outstanding people (most of which i will take with me for the rest of my life), the small class, the approachable faculty and staff, the interesting courses (and for your class – also the incredible change in the core and class structure), learning from those who wrote the text books, enjoying the proximity to silicon valley, the involved alums, the study trips, the unique chance to make a difference….

I graduated 2 weeks ago and I can honestly say I had the most amazing and challenging two years of my life: I met so many interesting people, broadened my horizons, stepped out of my comfort zone (on many occasions :-)) and gained a new set of skills.

I also think that it is a question of a personal fit. This is not the right place for everyone. For me it was. I recommend researching thoroughly the web site, talking with current students and alums and maybe even visiting here – all in order to understand what the GSB is about. If you understand what the school is about and why you want to come here, you will also be able to write a better application.

Oh, almost forgot the GMAT… the GMAT is one of several criteria as Zepko mentioned above. on the GSB's web site you can see that for the class of 2007 the range of GMAT grades was 500 to 800 (with an average of 720). I also heard (i am not sure if it is officail or just a legend) that applicants with a GMAT of 800 did not get in. It may be discouraging but PLEASE dont let a low GMAT grade discourage you (or any other Israelis) from submitting their applications. It is one of many criteria….

The admissions office offers class visit, presentation about the school, a tour and lunch with current students. You can sign up to all of these on the web site.

In addition, you are welcome to join me to my classes on the day of your visit. If i will not have any classes that you like to attend, i can find others that will.

So, first see what is available through admissions, than if you have a problem or just want to see more, let me know and i will be happy to arrange this for you

Same for everyone else who is reading this.

Stanford admissions will also host an information session for prospective students in Israel in 3 or 4 weeks, no final date and location yet, but we will keep you all posted

Our quarter starts on Sep 26th, and the 27th will be the first day of Tuesday classes. I guess this is why there are no class visits at that time. I personally have a class from 10 to 12. If you want i can try to email the professor before and get his permission ro bring you to class.

Would be happy to have lunch, but i dont think i can comit to it at this point. If I will not be able to, other Israelis may be able too (or other non Israelis for sure), but we can find it out closer to your visit date. If i cant have lunch, i could have coffee in the afternoon for sure.

I suggest you email me several days before your visit to finalize details

    Hey Assaf –

    1) The Stanford MBA is a full time, 2 year program. There is a one year program (Sloan) which is not an MBA but MSc. and is similar to executive MBA. You can read about it and compare to the MBA here: color=#800080 http://www.gsb.stanford.edu/sloan/academics/compare.html

    2) It is not that bad to do an MBA with kids. Sometimes I think that it is even easier because I get energy and support from them, while others go back to their empty room at the dorms…..

You need to carefully manage your time prioritize differently than others (read bed time stories instead of going to bars). A supporting spouse, like mine, is extremely helpful. I guess it is also more difficult because you lose the support of parents/in-laws/other family free babysitters. On the other hand, I think my family became a part of the GSB community and we all benefit from it. If you live on campus (which I don’t) your kids will also enjoy a “kibbutz” style living with many kids running around all the time.

    3) There are many students with kids, but most if not all, have student fathers (3 of my classmates will return in September with a baby, so that will change). There are clubs for spouses and kids (biz partners and biz kids). color=#800080 http://www.gsb.stanford.edu/mba/studentlife/clubs_activities.html/SPAN also http://www.gsb.stanford.edu/mba/studentlife/families_partners.html

    Hi Infowell –

If you click on my name, you can read my past messages and learn about my education (Law, accounting and economics in TAU – not with honors) and about my work experience (Hospitality industry and Corporate finance).

I was involved in a non profit organization before I moved here and try to keep updated from far. On my spare time (yes, it exists even in Stanford) I love spending time with my family (2 kids + an amazing hubby), watch bad movies (sci-fi, action, stupid comedies) and learn new languages.

Grades non disclosure policy is one of the GSB's culture foundations. As such, I don’t feel comfortable sharing my GMAT score here. I also don't think it is important as admission to the GSB is a balance of all factors and the GMAT scores of admitted students range significantly. The GMAT is one of many indicators to your academic rigor (check GSB site for data). If you insist/curious email me (you can find my email on my old messages).

    Hi Eli,

אשמח אם תוכלי לפרט כמה שאת יכולה בפורום הזה על מה זה אומר תואר במנהל בהתמחוץ טכנולוגית – שזו לכאורה ההתמחות של סטנפורד.
The Stanford MBA has a general management focus. There are no majors.
You can read more about the Stanford curriculum here: face=Times New Roman color=#800080 http://www.gsb.stanford.edu/mba/learning/curriculum/index.html

כמו כן אילו תחומי מימון מציע בית הספר והאם באותה רמה מקצועית כמו הטכנולוגיה

The second year of the MBA is comprised only from electives and you can take whatever you want. You can focus on one subject such as finance or IT or you can take classes from variety of disciplines.
Check this link for current second year electives:
    face=Times New Roman color=#800080 http://www.gsb.stanford.edu/mba/learning/curriculum/second_year.html

All classes offered are in a very high level. The name of the school and the amazing California life style attract great faculty.

אני מעוניין חיצור קשר עם הסטודנטים הישראלים אצליכם לאורך החודשים הקרובים ואשמל לאסוף כל פיסת מידע אפשרית על סטנפורד.

I will be happy to answer your questions here or forward them to the other Israeli students here. If you plan to visit Stanford let us know and we will be happy to meet in person and show you around.

The official answer is that there is no difference between 1st and 2nd rounds, but you are discouraged from applying on the 3rd round. I heard some say that International applicants should apply on the 1st round so they will have more time to take care of visa issues, but I think your question relates to admission chances rather than logistics. My advice is, apply when you are READY for it. I mean, it is useless to stress and apply on the 1st round if your application is not the best you can make out of it yet. If your application is perfect by the 1st round deadline, apply than, if not, wait for the 2nd round. Diversity is an admission criterion but there are no quotas for different nationalities.
    Good luck !

    Hi Eladho and all –

One of my classmates who is enrolled in the education/MBA degree wrote the following unedited unofficial answers:

How common is a dual degree in general? How many students take the dual degree with Education?
    1) About 10-20 students each year generally pursue the joint-degree in Education (3-5% of the class). There are probably 1-2 MD/MBA students, 4-6 JD/MBA and 3-5 MBA / other (e.g. Kennedy School of Govt). So that's about 5-10% of the class in total.
Note that the SUSE and SLS degrees are part of "joint" programs rather than "dual" degrees (dual indicates no formal joint program). Additionally, sometimes a few students drop from the SUSE program since logistics and courseload can be difficult to complete in 2 years.
What can you tell me about Stanford University School of Education (SUSE)? In the dual degree program- how does one degree benefit from the other?
    2) You can probably find a good description of the SUSE program on Stanford websites. The program is quite broad, and different participants have different interests. The common theme is a strong interest in education and the desire to combine business and education studies to improve education in the future.
Interests include but are not limited to public school reform, adolescent development, applying technology to education, higher education, charter schools, policy administration, curriculum development, etc.
What kind of courses/labs are cross fields (GSB and SUSE)?
    3) There are only a few formal cross-listed courses between SUSE and GSB. These include Business Opportunities in Education, The Politics of Education, The Economics of Higher Education, Research & Practice in Urban Schools, and Strategic Leadership of Nonprofits (though this list can change year-to-year).
Other classes that have some overlap in theory but are not cross-listed include: Leadership in Diverse Organizations, Financial Management of Nonprofits, Social Entrepreneurship, Strategic Management of Nonprofits, and others.
As for your CSI education related question:
I searched the GSB site and read about SELI (Stanford Educational Leadership Institute) http://www.gsb.stanford.edu/csi/programs/seli.html which seems like what you are asking about.
Let me know if you have more questions or still want to talk directly with a joint degree student (I can't promise one would be available, but I can email all joint degree classmates and try).
    Good luck !!

You can check this link on the school's site http://www.gsb.stanford.edu/mba/learning/special_interests/joint_degrees.html

You can either post here (to benefit all) or email me more specific questions and i will try to get answers from non Israeli students who are enrolled in the program and forward their to you/ post them here.

    Good luck

    Yasmin

    Hi bilgrai –

You can check this link http://www.gsb.stanford.edu/pmp/ There is ton of information there as well as FAQ.

You can also email the program with specific questions to [email protected]

Personally, I am not involved with the PMP but if these resources can not answer your questions you can email me more specific questions to [email protected] or post them here and I will try to refer you to someone who will know the answers.

    Hi LPOW –
Age is not one of the admissions criteria for Stanford (Federal regulation which is in place to prevent age discrimination). However, most of the students still fall into the 3-4 year after college range. For the class of 2006 (my class) “Years of Experience” range was 0-18 and the mean was 4.0 (which translates for the average american who did not take any time off before or after school to 26).
The school does not plan or admit according to a specific range of work experience. It just happens.
Naturally, Israeli students that had to serve in the military are a bit older. When my class started. last fall, the Israeli students were mostly around 30 (+/- 2 years).
There are students with 0 years of work experience and from my experience they are great contributers to case discussion. A case discussion does not evolve solely around people's work experience but also around relevant academic frameworks and personal experiences. The younger students offer a different prespective and are many times more risk takers, meaning they are willing to take non popular positions in a discussion and play devil's advocate.
I think the admissions office is doing a great work (=they admitted me…) and everyone who is in, can and will be a great contributer to all of the others studying and growth process.
This is obviously my opinion. Hope it helps

Shosy and everyone else hi –

I did not graduate with honors.

Admission is a balance of everything, your grades, GMAT, experience and I think mostly your personality and fit to the culture.

I encourage every one to apply. I almost did not submit my application because I thought it is too hard to get in. It is a truly unique and amazing place and I am enjoying every second of it.

We would love to see more Israelis here next here (if you ask me, i would especially LOVE to see more girls) – so APPLY !!!

    Hi –

I was a reapplicant only at Harvard, but i did not get in again for the other schools it was my first time.

Since last year i re-did the GMAT (680 to 760), moved to the US and got a great job here.

My application was also better. I took enough time to think about it and to prepare it.

Good luck, want to see all of you here

Hi Skywalker (can we call you Luc ? )

I don't know yet. But somebody told me that you need a very good reason to say no to Stanford.

I plan to visit both Wharton and Stanford and will than make a decision.
