    Yaron,

    Welcome to the forum.

You mightwant to look into Tepper (Carnegie Mellon), as it is considered pretty strong in technology related issues, amd in the last few years it is getting stronger in entrepreneurship.

If yo uhave any questions, you can contact me at [email protected]. I am still a student, so I can't tell you much about the post MBA life, but I can get you some contacts, if needed.

    Happy Passover.

There are plenty of good MBA jobs in the corporations that are roughly 9 to 5. Generally speaking, they don't pay as much as consulting or I-Banking, but they can still be interesting and fulfilling.

Consulting can vary, but seems to be 60-80 hours a week, depending on the project and the firm. However, with many consulting firms and assignments you spend three night a week at the client's site, so it does affect you work – life balance

    Hope it helps…

    Ilan,

I have to admit that I haven't dived into it very deeply.

One thing about the loan is that (at least in the states) the interest expanse is tax deductable. If you take the loans in Israel, you should check if this rule still applies.

I will put my disclaimer again – I haven't really looked into it, and am just passing on bits of information I heard.

    Regards,

Hi Shachar, welcome to the forum

I would probably list CMU, MIT, Stanford and Berkeley as leading ones in technology.

I can mainly supply information about CMU, if and when you get to that stage.

    Good luck

By MIT you can find Brookline (If I spell it correctly), where there is a big jewish community.

CMU (Pittsburgh) also has jewish community wi th several synagogues.

And I am sure in New York (or any other big city) you will easily manage

    Hi levyad

CMU is pretty generous with scholarships (out of four israelis in the program two have full scholarships…). If you get a full scholarship you can get a J visa (at least, that's the way it works in CMU) that will allow you husband to work in the states.

I studied computer engineering in the EE department in the technion.

    I did visit the school.

It is not a must, and I recommend it if that time and budget allow and you can make it an effective visit (do something specific, not just walk around and visit a class)

    Roy,

    A few words about CMU:

The smallest program among the top 20 (admits150 students a year), this school is currently ranked ~15 by the Business Week and 3rd by the Wall street journal.

One important point, though, is that the school is in a process of changing. About 3 years ago the school got a donation of $55 Million (!) from one of its alumni. I don't know where all the money goes, but I can tell you about some:

    1. Class size was reduced from 240 students to 150, while keeping the faculty member, so the better side of the class stays, and the faculty to student ratio is one of the best among business schools (1:5, if I remember correctly)

    2. Renovating the facilities – I visited several universities, CMU had the best facilities. Come have a look if you want

    3. Scholarships – trying to draw the best people, the school is relatively generous with scholarships. I only talked with three out of the four Israelis here, but the three of us share total of two and a half full scholarships (!!) – 200,000$ over a two year course. Looking at the investment side of the Return on Investment, it can be a major factor.

The program is considered analytical, and its graduates are held by recruiters as ones with strong analytical skill. As for Pittsburgh, so far it is very nice, but I have to admit that I only been here in the summer. you can ask me again in April :). There is a nice Israeli community here and people are very friendly. You (or whoever is reading this message) is welcome to come and see.

In the bottom line, it is a very good school, which will probably get even better with the time. Join before it gets too late…

Feel free to ask more question, and good luck with the process.

    Hi,

you can check with the specific program, but I think you can ask for a short delay in your answer to the school. They understand you situation.

But start with applying, and see what happens.

    שמעון,

יצא לי לבקר בברקלי ובסטנפורד. הקוד לבוש היה די

    casual

    Another two cents,

I also noticed the WSJ has "strange" ranking with HBS and Stanford very low and less familiar school ranked higher. I think the reason lies in WSJ ranking system – It is based on recruiters ranking. Factors that might be beneficial for the student are bad for the recruiters.

The example they gave in their article was Stanford – It is harder for them to recruit there, the graduates charge more and negotiate more than in less familiar schools and (at least when it comes to the first post graduate position) they don't necessarily contribute more than graduates of other schools.

The result is that recruiter like stanford graduates less, but for you, as a graduate, it shouldn't matter. (You will have more recruiters coming, and will be able to charge more…)

Graduates of other schools (don't remember the names) were ranked higher for being modest and hard working (and probably charging less), which again, might not contribute to the graduate, but definetly contribute to the recruiter.

    Hope my insights help

Does anybody know where in the Stanford application form I should specify my military service? The don't ask for resume and specifically ask not to mention it in the full time experience

    Infowell,

I don't remember where I read it (one of Stanford's magazines, I suppose), but they said that you don't submit your resume as a part of the application.

A question I have on that matter – Does anybody know where in the form I should specify my military service?

I plan to do the TOEFL next week, in the old version (cBT), but they changed the practiced tests in the ets website to the new version (iBT).

Anyone has a CD / link to a place where I can find and practice the CBT version?

To all the GSB current students.

First, thanks for all the support and information.

I am planning to visit Stanford by the end of the month, probably Tuesday 27.9

From what I've seen in the website, most visiting activities start only during october.

Do you know if there's any visiting activities at that time? Is there a way to priately arrange a lunch with a student?

I will be glad if one of you can spare some of his time to meet and show me around. (lunch on me :-) )

    Hello

In the end of September I am planning to make a tour in Stanford, Berkeley, MIT and possibly Carnegie mellon

I went over all the massages here, and still have some questions to people who did campus tours:

    1. Are there any tips for makeing the visit more effective?

    2. Besides scheduling a lecture, that I need to do in advance, it looks like I can just pop up there. Is it that simple?

3 .I understand that sitting with a student is recommended. How do I contact one?

    4. What is the dress code in each school?

    Thanks,

    Gilam,

I have two questions. To make the answer more specific, please refer to Stanford, MIT, Berkelry and Carnegie mellon, the schools to which I am going to apply:

    1. I don't think my direct supervisor can supply a good recommendation (he is satisfied with my work, but I doubt about his ability to show enthusiasm / point out the skills I have that are relevant for MBA schools), I'd rather use recommandations of other people in my company. How do most schools conisder recommendations from people that are not my direct supervisors? what are the possible tactics from explaining why I am not adding a recommendation from a direct supervisor? (I am not sure the reason I gave he will work…)

    2. I have quite an extensive overseas experience (almost two years of backpacking :) ). I think I can use it as a plus in uniqeness / diversity, but I doubt if I can attribute it to anything else that is sought by schools. I am also affraid it can be seen as "Not being direct with my goals in life". What are the strategies for making such experience a plus?

    Thanks,

    Guy

    guylevit
