To tell the truth, I always thought I preferred HBS. I really liked the school when I was there and I think the case study is an awesome way to learn (albeit not every subject but what can you do?). After that I guess it is Columbia, MIT,and then NYU. But it is hard to tell between the NY programs as they both have so much to offer but yet are very different with each having it's own appealing strengths.

However, the new E & I program at MIT seems really great and very attractive. But my wife and family would probably be happier in the NY area.

So, like you and everyone else on this board, there are many reasons for different choices. It is very hard to tell now. May we all be lucky and succesful enough to have to choose.

And if it this is a theoretical question for you, then it is double so for me as I have not received any interview invites yet.

I wish for us all to be able to continue this discussion in the "Accepted" thread in a couple of months.

    Wow Limor.

    Great News!

    Very impressive too.

BTW – how do you rank your choices of schools? Which do you want to go to most?

    Hi Tal,

The link you posted and which is supposed to send you to the web page for signing up for the event only sends you to the Kellog list of events. There is no option for registeration.

Could you please explain how to register for the event if it is indeed required to do so?

    Limor,

Thanks for posting Sandy's response. I think it makes sense since HBS must interview everybody before acceptance, that the more ineteresting/complicated/intriguing applicants are interviewed by the adcom themselves so they can really address a specific issue that got them interested in your application. I am sure you received a phone interview for only positive reasons.

In general I personally think that an interview with and adcom is better as it is not biased by an alumn's personal impression of you vs. him. What I mean is, please remember this is just a very superficial example, that if he doesn't like your shirt, he might say – hey we don't like people who wear those kind of shirts as HBS graduates. Again, I repeat, this is just a very general and bad example. I hope the idea gets across. An adcom, since this is there job, should be more able to overlook such things.

Regarding your icon – I also like the old Coke posters (my wife says I am a Coke addict), and have a couple myself. The pic was too small to make out on the board.

YFEFFER – BW is the BusinessWeek forum which is dedicated to MBA aplicants. students and alumni. There is a lot of useful information on the board and a few lifers, like Sandy, who have seen it all and can really help explain some of the less known processes of the adcoms. BTW, it is majorly a source of more pressure for those of us still waiting for an interview invite.

    Good luck to us all,

Many people are itching for an opportunity to defend their applications – it means you were interesting enough to get an interview from HBS!

Thanks for the updates. However, now that the week is going by quickly with no invites I kind of wish the adcoms were off all week. That would have given me more hope…

Good luck Psychodude – I'm sure you'll do fine.

    Eyal Thanks!

That was an awesome answer from Sandy!

I actually read the original info on a different BW thread. I have been looking in to it myself, on the school websites (better than just rubbing my pants – I loved that line) and it would seem some people mixed up Thanksgiving and Christmas, as some of the schools take off the week from Christmas till after New Years, but Thanksgiving is just a weekend of turkey and football.

May we all hear good news soon and remember to give thanks for it.

    Congratulations Idan.

I am sorry, but I have not (yet?) enjoyed the special experience that is the HBS interview so I can't help you with that.

When did you get the invite? It was my understaning that there will be no invites this week, from HBS, or anywhere else, as it is Thanksgiving. I know Thanksgiving is just the weekend (Thurs – Sun) but apparently the adcoms take the whole week off. I can understand they need a break from reading applications but I don't know if my nerves can take it!

Good luck on the interview and to us all…

All you need is a wife who makes it very clear she needs a vacation, her b-day as an excuse and a free night in a tzimmer courtesy of work and then you realize that the piles aren't going anywhere and can wait a couple of more days till you get back.

My biggest worry while I was away was getting an interview invite already!

Hopefully we will all have a couple years vacation from work while enjoying a wonderful MBA experience abroad, starting this summer…

    Laker,

I am a fan too. Since Magic came to the team. (Yeah, I'm getting old)

I purposely posted this information regarding 6 am as a question as I did not know it to be necessarily true. I seem to remember other people either last year or on a different board, maybe BW, discussing that HBS decides each day on a number of interviews and then at the end of the day they are entered into the system which only sends out the e-mails the next morning at 6 am.

I am asking if anyone else heard anything like this? Maybe it was a different school and not HBS?

    Anyway, moving on…

I was wondering what time of day the e-mails about interviews have been arriving. I seem to remember HBS writing that they send them out everyday at 6 am EST. Is this true?

I mean to say there is no need to keep checking my e-mail every few hours if I were to know that the message will come at a certain time of day. Right? This way you check once, and move on with at least one more day to wait.

    Hi Yael,

Since re-applicants are only required to write the first essay, regarding career and goals, the question arose whether we should address our full history or just pick up from where we left off last year.

This qiestion was posted on the BW forum and the poster was recommended to contact NYU admissions directly. The response was some thing like: use your own judgement when preparing the essay. – Not much help.

What is your opinion on the subject?

First – Congrats to all those who received interview invites. Good luck.

Limch, Eyal – the very standard you said I did not hold for others you did not hold for me. I wrote everything from a very general viewpoint pruposely not saying anything bad about anyone, since, as you correctly pointed out, I do not know them.

My question and explanation regarding the kind of Hotshot involved is due to a very disturbing story from last years application where a certain Israeli got in because his father, the CEO of a major Israeli company, donated a few million $ to HBS.

I support you all and only wish you luck. I have been around here too long, and have made many friends (current students and reapplicants) through the forum. I have helped and counseled others, both here and offline as well, and I don't think any of them would say I was full of myself. I would ask you to be careful and not to judge me based on one post in which I shared my personal feelings of frustration, just as you claim I wrongly did to others.

If I offended anyone I am sorry. That was not my intention at all.

Eyal – Please tell your boss I am sorry.

Limor – the comment about spending your time was made in good humor. I am sorry it was not taken as such. I truly appreciate and value the input and data you post. Additionally, the warning about the nail biting is due to my own bad experience. A habit which was very hard to break (but necessary nontheless – how many CEO's do you see biting their nails at board meetings?). On the other hand, you have no idea why I was not accepted last year, or why I am not there already. Any speculation on your part is inconsiderate and bordering slander. Just as you would have others held to certain forum standards (like you correctly remarked to me) please hold yourself to them as well.

To tell the truth I am pretty calm and am happy to see so many people getting the invites they have been waiting for.

Good luck to us all and keep the faith,

    AZ

You're boss sounds like a jerk. Sorry.

As for Hotshots, my personal opinion is that there are good hotshots and bad. Good hotshots – have accomplished substantial things through their skills and abilities. Bad hotshots – are full of hot air, use a lot of connections (protexia in Hebrew) and are generally pompus jerks. (Kind of what your boss sounds like. )

I do not think any specific background or trait of a person will make him a bad hotshot. It is irrelevant what you're background is. The question is who you are. I would hope the adcoms during their review of applications and interviews weed such bad hotshots out. (Obviously they can't get them all – see the story about the HBS grad who was acused of murder!)

In any case, in the past Harvard had a name for accepting mostly the bad kind of hotshots due to connections and family history/status. Through my research before applying and after visitng the campus and meeting students I can tell you that this is definitely NOT true.

However, if you consider that this is a prestigious degree in business from very respectful schools, there will always be a few bad hotshots who get in through their connections and recommendations. In most cases I would imagine, the strong social environment keeps such bad hotshots in check.

Good luck to your boss's brother-in-law and to us all. May we all share good news soon.

    Yael,

After spending a long time on the NYU wait list last year, I was rejected.

No hard feelings, as things have worked out for the better. It is good that I stayed here in Israel this year.

Now that I am re-applying, how should I approach the application process? I am required to submit only the first essay. Should I just elaborate on what has changed over the past year? Should I submit additional essays? If so, then should I reestablish my commitment to NYU and its community through essay 2 or think up something new for essay 3?

There is no problem of Jewish communities or kosher food in any of the schools located in major cities: NY, LA, Boston, Philadelphia, Chicago etc.

However, the variety differs. No matter where you go you can find Kosher products in the major supermarkets and cannot walk in to a Burger King… (Dunkin' Donuts is a different story!)

The schools in smaller and more rural areas are more of a problem. Not many religious Jews in Dartmouth, Cornell, etc. But still there are some.

    Interesting.

But definitely turns up the heat/brings on the pressure, etc.

I am worried about the statement that the recruiting market emphasis goes from second year to first year through this system. As it is there is enough pressure to find a summer internship. I would like to know that at least in my first year (G-d willing – after I am accepted) I can concentrate on learning the core courses and basics.

They want to know that you have done all you can to meet their deadline.

They must have a deadline else people will keep sending them pieces of applications (which is also why they ask you to state if and what you are sending seperately).

However, they understand you cannot control the mail. May I remind you that some of the applicants are from very remote places.

Therefore they put the responsibility on you to get the package to the mail by the application date. The piece of mail must have a stamped date of "sent" prior to the deadline to be considered in a specific round.

    Makes some sense, no?

    JoeCool

For most of these schools there are explicit instructions stating that the mailed in portions of the application must be stamped before the deadline – meaning you need to get to the doar and have the package stamped for sending by the deadline.

The actual arrival is not important.

Here are some real-life lessons for MBA Students (now that I have time to joke around after submitting HBS and Columbia):

    Case Study #1:

    Corporate Governance

A crow was sitting on a tree, doing nothing all day. A small rabbit saw the crow and asked him: "Can I also sit like you and do nothing all day long?" The crow answered: "Sure, why not." So, the rabbit sat on the ground below the crow, and rested. All of a sudden, a fox appeared, jumped on the rabbit and ate it.

Q: What can we learn from this?

A: To be sitting and doing nothing, you must be sitting very high up.

    Case Study #2:

    Ambition

A turkey was chatting with a bull. "I would love to be able to get to the top of that tree," sighed the turkey, "but I haven't got the energy. "Well, why don't you nibble on some of my droppings?" replied the bull. "They're packed with nutrients." The turkey pecked at a lump of dung and found that it actually gave him enough strength to reach the first branch of the tree. The next day, after eating some more dung, he reached the second branch. Finally after a fortnight, there he was proudly perched at the top of the tree. Soon he was promptly spotted by a farmer, who shot the turkey out of the tree.

    Case Study #3:

    Business Ethics

When the body was first made, all the parts wanted to be Boss. The brain said: "I should be Boss because I control the whole body's responses and functions." The feet said, "We should be Boss as we carry the brain about and get him to where he wants to go." The hands said, "We should be the Boss because we do all the work and earn all the money." And so it went on and on with the heart, the lungs and the eyes until finally the asshole spoke up. All the parts laughed at the idea of the asshole being the Boss. So the asshole went on strike, blocked itself up and refused to work. Within a short time the eyes became crossed, the hands clenched, the feet twitched, the heart and lungs began to panic and the brain fevered. Eventually they all decided that the asshole should be the boss, so the motion was passed. All the other parts did all the work while the boss just sat and passed out the shit!

Q: What can we learn from this?

A: You don't need brains to be a Boss – any asshole will do.

Q: What else can we learn from this?

A: Bullshit might get you to the top, but it won't keep you there.

Limch – Thanks for the links.

Laker – I agree that a good U.S. school is starting to mean more here in Israel. I think this is due in part to the fact that many of the up and coming senior managers have U.S. experience themselves whether through educational or work experiences abroad.

However, nothing is more important then experience. A good couple/few years of substantial experience will go a long way, not just towards covering your debt, but also to showing that your MBA helped you get a good job and that you have had real hands on experience in the real world. We all know people who went to the best programs but were lousy at their job. Succesful experience proves you are more then just grades…
