    Hi Ran,

I am a second year MBA student at Columbia. The interview is important but it is difficult to assign a certain weight to it. It is an opportunity for the admissions committee to get to learn more about you, and ask your interviewer to assess your communication skills (in English) and whether they would have liked you as their classmate. Feel free to email me at [email protected] if you wish to discuss further.

    Good luck!

    Hi Sergey,

I am a second year student at Columbia Business School.

The majority of admission offers are made in the second round. Last year more Israelis were admitted in the second round than in the first one but the year before that very few Israelis were admitted in the second round. I think that the overall admissions rate is marginally higher in the Early Decision Round.

It is best to submit an application when you feel that it is a good presentation of your case for admission. If you feel that your current GMAT score will not truly reflect your potential for academic excellence then retake the exam and submit your application later. If time constraints prevent you from showcasing your strengths and achievements then spend some more time on these. However, if you project only minor improvements (GMAT and essays) then you should weigh it against the likelihood that the school will have already admitted an Israeli with a similar background. You should also take into account Columbia’s rolling admissions process – you can submit before the second round deadline.

    Good luck!

I believe that most schools have a break sometime in March. At Columbia, for instance, we're on break from March 2nd till the 10th.

Through visits to the different schools prospective students may gain insights into the school life and personal fit with geographic location, get to know current students, and get a sense of the student body spirit. All these, and possibly the increased motivation to attend certain programs, are, in my opinion, reflected in better crafted essays.

As a second-year student, and an admissions ambassador at Columbia Business School, I know that visits to the school are not cross referenced with applications, and I doubt that other institutions do that.

That's a very good point – at Columbia (and probably at other schools as well) they tape all the classes on religious holidays and students have electronic access to these afterwards.

    Itai,

There are indeed CBS graduates who go for high-tech marketing and finance positions. Last summer, for instance, people interned at Microsoft, Intel, Google, Yahoo and Lucent, just to name a few. Two people in my cluster will be doing marketing this summer for Google here in New York. I also have an American friend here who’s thinking of launching a new tech venture with an Israeli entrepreneur that he met at a presentation. If you have more questions on this then I’d be glad to connect you with people from the school’s technology and entrepreneurship clubs. I would think that Stanford and MIT will have higher percentages of graduates going into the tech industry but I guess that fewer people here at Columbia seek such positions.

    Good luck with your sniffing.

    Yonatan,

It is common for students to concentrate on 2 fields. I am not sure whether RE and Entrepreneurship is a popular combination although my guess would be that it is. Please refer to http://www0.gsb.columbia.edu/mba/admissions/talk_student and contact students with interests that match yours to find out more about those. I would be glad to answer any other questions you have about the program and school.

    Gil,

I believe that if you submit a good application (good stories, why mba, why now, why columbia) then you have a good chance. It's impossible to quantify. It would obviously depend slightly on the number and backgrounds of Israelis admitted in Early Decision. If you have more questions feel fee to email me at [email protected] .

    To: netzon

    Hello netzon,

My name is Lior and I am a first year MBA student at Columbia Business School.

I will assume your question is with regard to CBS. When you say second round – do you mean the Regular Decision Round or a later round? First, bear in mind that international students should complete their application by March 1st, if I am not mistaken ( color=#800080 http://www0.gsb.columbia.edu/mba/admissions/options). Ideally, if you submit a quality application, explaining your need for an MBA from CBS (!!!), you should be able to get in no matter the round in which you apply. You should, however, be aware that diversity is taken into account when filling in the MBA class puzzle. Since the school uses rolling admissions and since they would have probably offered admission to several Israelis in ED you may have a harder time gaining admission the further down the line you apply.

Regarding your GM and Marketing interest please refer to my post from October 30th. As long as you do a good job explaining your reasons for an MBA it doesn’t matter if you do not wish to become a financier. As for the academic program: the school allows you to concentrate on specific management fields during your second year of studies but you are not required to concentrate in anything! We have a pretty good Marketing faculty and the associated students club is also very dominant at school. I would be happy to refer you to others who are more knowledgeable in this arena.

If you (or others) have specific questions about the academic program, career services, student lifestyle, or just anything related to CBS, feel free to email me at face=Times New Roman color=#0000ff [email protected] and I will do my best to assist where I can or at least refer you to someone who may have the answers.

    Good Luck!

Infowell and people considering Columbia Business School:

Columbia Business School’s MBA Class of 2007 Profile:
    face=Times New Roman color=#800080 http://www1.gsb.columbia.edu/admissions/Columbia_September_2005_Class_Profile.pdf
As you may notice 13% of the class comes from a technological work-experience background – very close to other top represented industries: Consulting 14%, Financial Services 17%, Investment banking 15%. Don’t let Columbia’s reputation for finance deter you from applying. As for post MBA employment, tech companies come to campus and recruit Columbia MBAs. Intel, Google, Lucent, Yahoo, Samsung, Symantec, and Microsoft, to name a few, hired CBS people for summer internships this past summer. That said, other schools may serve as a better stepping stone for such a career.

    Columbia University Housing:
As Ohad already mentioned, the different types of accommodations differ in price range. Most shared apartments cost $700-800 a month, a studio $900 and a one-bedroom $1100. There are furnished and unfurnished apartments. The Columbia main campus neighborhood is a great place to live – very collegial in terms of population, stores and restaurants and bars. It is a safe neighborhood to walk around at night, like most of Manhattan nowadays. For more information please refer to the following link: face=Times New Roman color=#800080 http://www.columbia.edu/cu/ire/

    Hope that helps,

Nir and all who are interested in CBS:
I am a 1st-year student so I’ve just recently started the MBA.
However, for popular courses information you can take a look at: color=#0000ffhttp://www0.gsb.columbia.edu/mba/academics/electives .
Look at the most popular courses and also check out the course catalog where you’d be able to get a brief description of all currently offered courses.
Perhaps you’d want to consider linking the courses (or professors) that you find intriguing to your career goals.
