HBS just announced it plans to disclose studnet grades to future employers – how do you think this will impact the schools atmosphere?

Do you think other non disclosure schools will follow their lead?

    Thanks!

Well – HBS has changes its grade non disclosure policy – I think its a horrible move….

    14 December 2005

    Dear Students,
I am writing to let you know that, beginning with the Class of 2008, Harvard Business
School will no longer prohibit students from disclosing the grades they earn in the MBA
program. I recognize that this decision will not be welcome news, for I understand most of you
would prefer to continue with our current policy.

In making this decision, I have listened carefully to concerns voiced by current students,
and sought the views of faculty, staff, former students, recruiters, and other key constituencies
who also care deeply about this issue and its effect upon HBS. I have consulted extensively with
Rick Ruback, the MBA Program Chair, and sought advice from the Senior Associate Deans who
comprise the faculty leadership. After carefully weighing the arguments on both sides of the
issue, and in light of our long-standing mission and reputation, I believe this is the right decision
    for the School.

Fundamentally, I believe it is inappropriate for HBS to dictate to students what they can
and cannot say about their grades during the recruiting process. I believe you and your
classmates earn your grades and should be accountable for them, as you will be accountable for
your performance in the organizations you will lead in the future. You each should be at liberty
to provide recruiters with the fullest possible picture of your accomplishments — including your
academic performance while here at the School. In addition, Harvard Business School's
reputation is deeply rooted in the transformational experience we provide in our classrooms, an
experience that is vitally dependent upon maintaining high academic standards. The relatively
recent policy of prohibiting disclosure is inconsistent with our commitment to these standards.

In individual emails and conversations as well as other larger forums for discussion and
the recent Student Association poll, current students have raised a range of concerns related to
disclosure, including decreased cooperation and collaboration in the classroom, less willingness
to take risks (including course selection during the second year), grading practices, and a
potentially less diverse mix of incoming students. I have talked at length with faculty, with staff,
and with former students, particularly those who were here before we had prohibitions on
disclosure. Based on their extensive experience at the School (including faculty who themselves
were students at HBS), most believe the transition back to our original policy can be managed —
with careful consideration of the implementation issues many of you have raised — to minimize
any such effects. Based on our own experience over many years, Rick and I agree with this
    view.

I would hope we can use the coming year, working together, to plan the implementation
of the change, and to make detailed recommendations on ways to monitor and mitigate any
detrimental outcomes. I have asked Rick and the MBA program group to engage student
leadership on this implementation, forming student-faculty working groups to develop guidelines
we can apply for the Class of 2008. We all want to ensure that HBS remains an outstanding
    learning environment on every dimension.

I am grateful for the time and energy many of you have taken to share your thoughts and
opinions over the last several weeks. Your passion is a clear measure of how much you value
your experience here, and how much you wish to strengthen and improve the MBA program.
We share that deep commitment to the School and to the very special educational experience that
    it provides.

    Best regards,
    Jay Light

Please note it will take you longer than 2.5 years to pay back your debts as you will need approx 35K GBP to live in london. This is a long term investment – therefore you should consider if you are willing to live abroad for 6+ years (MBA + work) unless you have a wealthy spouse :)

Its bye bye Israel for some time…..

Please read a bit about i banking – its not as easy as it seems though your age would be an asset – They work 100 hours per week – if you can put up with that then its a great oppertunity for someone w/o meaningful experience.

Wharton IMHO is keen on experience – a 26 year old american would have 4 years of valuble experience – you compete against those people for industry jobs who are at a clear disadvantage.

Again banking and probably consulting are more flexible on experince if your CV is interesting (extra cariculars, leadership – also in b-school, b-school ranking youll have a better chance compensating for your lack of experience if your from HSW)

I think that full time experience is very important in industry just have a look at potential recruiters add – go to their website and research.

Re I-banking – thats another world – they look for sharp mussle power – they dont really care about experience –

You need to ask yourself what you want to be when you grow up :) – CFO (banking good option), CTO (PhD?), Head of R&D (MBA after a bit more experince in a blue chip)? I wouldnt apply for round 3 as HBS doesnt give you a second chance – so you have time to build a compelling case, oh and extra caricular activities seem important – helps them weed out the anti-social dweebs – If I were you (just my opinion) I would gear up for next year and try to volunteer somewhere (Kadima comes to mind they have no active field members)

This is only MY PERSONAL opinion so take it for whats it worth… i can only say for sure that cigaretes kill…. and that you will have to pay your taxes…

    Good uck

    Mate,

You have great stats – really impressive but IMHO its better to go for an MBA with some experience – if your looking for an employer to sponser you (i.e. not an american citizen) they will value some real life experience. To make a long story short – experience will dramatically improve your exit options- an MBA is not a passport – its only a foot in the door – especially in industry – go work for 2-3 years in a leading company – intel – and your employment prospects will improve dramatically. – if you wish to be an ibanker please ignore my comments.

    Assaf,

I just find it strange the FT and a like would make such a consistent mistake – unless you have data from HBS and others taking the entire class as a sampling group. HBS constantly has a higher average – though 175 sounds excessive. Again i dont believe that Goldman has a different pay band for an HBS grad and an Oxford grad…. – maybe there are more on off jobs offered at HBS or the mix is focused to banking in the US vs. chicago which would be more international?

On another note – do you know what % of applicants invited to interviews are accepted?

    Thanks

    On another note –

    Assaf,

Seems a bit much to say the numbers are bogus – the trend they describ is consistent across all the leading ratings.

I do agree with you that for the same jobs there is no difference if you come from HBS or LBS….

What is the probability of being accepted if your invited for an interview at H/W/S? Are there people accepted w/o an interview? I heard that if you get an interview at H you have a good chance of getting in as long as you dont ding the interview.

But he didn't start the project – therefore we do need to take the investment ito account – also friends of mine say that to live a reasonably decent life in London you'll need £35K, leaving you 10£ to pay back your debts – so payback could take a long time….

    Dear Gilam,

Thank you for your great help in this form.

I wanted to know if there are different traits between the Israelis accepted to W/H/S/K: what are the unique characteristics of the Israelis accepted to each school (how do they differ). In which schools is it harder for Israelis to get in – Am I right to suspect that for us the schools order of selectivity is H/S/K/W?

I think its too late for this question -R1 dead line has passed – as an investment analysis you should only ask yourself if you want to apply for this year or wait for next year – anyway Wharton seem to be friendly to reapplicants so i dont think you've got anything to loose….
