    Shahar,

If your wife (and wife only, since this doesn't apply to other significant others) wants to work, you should obtain a J visa and not an F visa which is usually the default. In order to obtain J, you need to show that you have some external funding (preferably a company, but in any event NOT your family) that will pay at least half of your tuition. Also, you need to show that you have enough resources to pay for 2 years, not only tuition but the school’s budget estimates (around 65-75k a year for a couple without kids), while you only need to prove 1 year for F, and that usually means that you either have enough in your bank (plus the external funding) or that you complement it with a loan.

From your perspective, J may limit your stay – as soon as you graduate you must find a job immediately or leave the US (if you do find one beforehand, you can extend it up to 18 months). Some people consider it as a problematic constraint.

You should also consider that once you show the school that you have some external funding, your chances to get any non-merit financial support cease to exist.

When you arrive to the US with J, your wife needs to apply for a work permit that takes about 3 months. Then, she can work anywhere.

Finally, your wife can also try to find work without a permit and hope that someone will sponsor her H visa (H, unlike J, is employer specific). It's obviously harder to find such an employer.

    Good luck

I have to say that I spoke with some people from the 2005 class and they told me that everyone accepted the offer.

However, there may have been people with Israeli background living in the US that didn't take it

An amazing Stanford acceptance rate here.

I don't anything about MIT, but I was waitlisted from Wharton (they call it waitlist), with the same message you received – we will consider you again with the R2 applicant pool. So I don't think it is so bizarre. For me the subtext was that they deem me suitable for the class, however, they had more exciting applicants and want to see R2 before they make the decision – while you never know how close you were in the first place, it is a sign that you have reasonable to good chance of being admitted. In Wharton, they said that number of apps went down in R2 vs. last year but not as significantly as R1. Obviously, for such waitlisters the less apps the better…

I applied in R1, so may consider my experience fresh…

If you want my opinion about Kellogg interview (and that all it is), the second best tip (after coming well prepared!!!), is a that its interviewers looks for people who are not only great-potential-future-business-leaders , but also REALLY team players who will coloborate well in the class and fit its spirit.

The questions are quite ordinary (why, short-term/long term goals), leadearship/teamwork experiences etc. my interviewer was very friendly, we talked in English for about 30 minutes and than discussed his experience in Kellogg (in Hebrew) for another 20 minutes. I know another interviewer, and think you would find such attitude common.

I assume that common mistakes may include:

talking about why Kellogg and not other schools (which may sound apologetic) are the best for you – obviously its better than saying it is not your top priorty

Not answering the questions (and attempting to oversell yourself), or otherwise answering quickly w/o digesting the question

Apologizing about anything in your resume or about your English

Asking dumb questions in the end

dressing like a buffon (in most cases it means NOT wearing a business casual at least, you can always ask what the interviewers suggests)

Improvizing a lie (which from my personal experience as an interviwer for other causes is the worse)

A personal tip for you would be to avoid any humour similar to that in your above user nickname….

    Good luck

בתגובה ל: ASK GMAX: GMAT #1709

hi, i m planning on applying for mba in one of the top business schools in the usa i would like to ask two q's :

    1. for how long is the gmat score valid ? suppose i take the test on march 2004, would it be good for the 2005 / 2006 registry ?

the Gmat is good for 5 calenderic years,. you will be able to use until the 2008 fall. The Toefl is only good for 2 years, but then again it less of an issue

    2. what is the average gmat score for foreign students in the 10 top schools ?

You should aim for the area of the 700+. This doesn't mean you can't get in with less (though 650 is almost minimum), but it depends a lot on your profile, and on the school.

    Good luck

Yes, for geographic reasons, certainly location makes a difference. And if you study on the west coast and want to work on the east coast, even from Stanford, you might have less opportunites. As for your other comments – check McKinsey recruting statistics for example (2 years ago it was about 40 from HBS 15 from Wharton 14 from Stanford, 12 from Kellogg, 10 from Columbia and maybe few from other schools). I have a friend from Insead (graduated summer 2002 that was one of the only 3 or 4 in his class to go to McKinsey, not including returning consultants).

I don't think all top 20 are the same. Nevertheless I think all of them give you similar theortical opportunites (notwithstanding the chance to realize them).

I am not trying to argue that all 10-15 top schools offer a lot of opportunities, however, I am arguing (and please try to convince me that I am wrong, as I know very well the policy of one recruiter and not all) that there are in fact schools that offer more opportunites than other (at least statistically). For that matter, ask anyone who recruits MBA graduates (and does get Stanford candidates) from a large consulting company if he treats Stanford and Cornell the same. This is not to say that Bain won't take someone from cornell. In the tough market out there today – if you can get toa top 5 rather than top 15 it will make a difference – it is not just a pissing competition. Furthermore, in some cases the stident body is different,

Well, the ratings are problematic and can may be irrelevant in many cases, however, there is a different between the top schools, particularly in brand power, and in some case recruiting opportunities. For that matter HBS and Stanford have more brand power than other. Wharton, Kellogg, Chicago (for some sectors), Columbia, MIT (for some sectors) may offer almost the sime job opportunities as HBS and Stanford (though some school's career support system is less effective).

Certainly Cornell and Stanford are nor comparable.
