Hi JSJS,

IMHO, when serving as a soldier at a combat unit or any other non-leading role the effect is quite small (unless u are at a very special unit which u r able to rave about and is comparable to an elite US unit).

As with every thing one is able to squeeze the juice out of even the simplest military service and portray it in a most shining light.

I think one must remember the lack of mandatory army service which the americans have(it sounds like something bad) so such a service at another country by an international applicant might appeal to the Adcom as something different.

Another thing is that as a commander incharge of 30 – 40 soldiers the picture changes. for example an officer serving at a backwards unit (non combative) which has a 200k$ budget to handle is quite different. the same goes for roles which have high decision making capabilities and include planning and excecuting orders of high caliber.

I was reffering to the set of skills gained during the over seas MBA.

1. Analytical skills.

2. Proffesional – economic/marketing/finance…

3. Managerial skills (communication presentation skills) gained through classes, projects not extra curricular activities.

in essence i meant the skills gained by the learning experience itself being delivered by people (proffesors) paid to deliver it.

the importance of some of the points mentioned by SHIMONH which don't fall under this category (class mates, internship, culture…) are quite clear for me.

One more issue, do you guys think such an MBA experience can make one who is not the best leader into a leader or it just builds on an exsisting high level of leadership skills which most US MBA students start studying with. Does the MBA program during the course of study make you go through some mandatory teaching chain which ultimatly, whether you like it or not make you into a better leader?

I myself find this hard to believe, I think of this issue as the type of: either you got it, or you don't, it cannot be taught.

I am trying to gain an understanding of the leadership skills gained.

i would appreciate some current students to reply to this post.

Can someone answer this,

Is the education earned dring the 2 years at an American (international) brand name institute, "better" than the one earned during a TAU MBA?

If so, can this education make the difference in order to produce a competent, well performing employee out of an otherwise (local MBA educated) disfunctional one?

I am talking about education only, not connections/shmoozing/networking not the brand decorating your graduation diploma nor the door-opening interview-inviting aspect.

Hi there,

i went to Mckinsey for their previous round, where i was dissmissed after the first case study interview.

As far as i can tell, they prefer science educated applicants (i am an EE), we were three out of EE school at TAU and all of us got to the Case study round. i think that is rather good.

the chances of getting accepted are pretty slim but to those who make it, apart from the "great" working hours, they usually finance a MBA at the school of your choice. They are pretty keen on MBA studies.

i think the Mckinsey paycheck for a Bsc in EE is around 40000$, making them uncompetitive on the technology market but thats not why you go there.

Hi all,

I have had three laptops, the first two were compaq (currently hp) and they were troublesome, they got very hot during work and their power consumption sucked. maybe since the processor was AMD.

my third, and currrent laptop is an IBM r40. great model great value for money great service and most of all reliable. i got it with a three year warranty (paid 800 shekels for it) which is the most important thing when buying a laptop. I would add that if you dont plan on getting a three year warranty – dont get one at all, the service on these machine can cost more than a new laptop (personal expr.).

the specs which are most important for the laptop are:

battery life~3.5 hours, memory size 512mb, processor speed ~1.5-1.7mhz, weight~2.4kg, service – years…

Bottom line – get an IBM, what's good for Intel employees is certainly good for you. but, i would wait until the last minute, since Intel is going to unvail its most advanced laptop processor "yona" which will give you more battery life and compting power. this act will also dramatically decrease the older models i.e. T42.

Hi All,

I would like to know the placement rates of international students, since i am trying to assess the risks involved with MBA abroad.

I am aware of the total placement of each school but none differentiate between the local American placement stats and the International ones.

I think you can start by checking which top American program has academic ties with an Australian one. This can be done by entering the American school's website.

I understand that in order to succeed both in the interview and in the essays you have to understand, comprehensively and thoroughly, the pro's of the school u are applicating to. Is getting this data from the schools website sufficient, or should I try other sources (if yes, what are they)?

כבר הצגתי את עצמי בקצרה. ארחיב מעט.

היום אני עובד בחברת בת של מוטורולה כסטודנט במחלקת פיתוח.
לפני תעסוקה זו עבדתי באינטל במשך כשנה גם בתור סטודנט.
אין לי רקע התנדבותי כלשהו או תרומה לציבור.(week point).

הנני סטודנט להנדסת חשמל באונ' ת"א ממוצע 84. מסיים בקיץ 05'.
גילי הינו 28 ועד התאריך בו אני מעוניין להתחיל ללמוד אהיה בעל נסיון תעסוקתי של כשנה וחצי בתור מהנדס משרה מלאה וכשלוש שנות נסיון כסטודנט.
עבדתי בנוסף גם בתור איש בטחון באל-על. כ-5 שנים בתור ראש צוות. ביצעתי שם פרויקטי הדרכה והשתתפתי בתכנון גיוס והכשרת עובדים חדשים.
לימדתי בבית תוכנה מס' קורסים.

בצבא הייתי בנח"ל בתפקיד קצין קשר. פיקדתי על כ- 25 אנשים כולל קצין ונגד בתפקידי האחרון בצה"ל, בחטיבה בשטחים.
סיימתי מצטיין במספר קורסים צבאיים וכמו כן במהלך שירותי הצבאי. שירתתי כ- 4.3 שנים.

בשלב זה אני רק מתעניין באפשרות של MBA בחו"ל. תאריך יעד 06' ספט.
ואני רוצה להתחיל ללמוד ל gmat בעצמי ולהתחיל קורס יותר מאוחר.

אחת השאלות שיש לי בנושא MBA בחו"ל היא:
לאילו תוכניות אהיה רלוונטי/תחרותי.
ציון הפסיכומטרי שלי 747. כאמור עדיין אין gmat. דובר אנגלית כצוצאה של מגורים של מס' שנים בחו"ל.
אני מעוניין בלימודי ניהול בינלאומי ואסטרטגיה/ייעוץ.

אני מקווה לתרום לקהילת הפורום לפחות 20 הודעות בשנה הקרובה.
