Chicago GSB Scholarships:
There are rumors regarding the full-scholarships that the Chicago GSB is offering to Israeli students and we'd like to make sense of it all.
Unlike what you may have heard from people who are less than fully familiar with the situation, NONE of the scholarships have been offered to ANYONE yet.
Moreover, candidates will not even be considered for it before the full list of Israeli admits from BOTH first and second rounds is completed.
So, if the scholarship is what you base you decision on (which it shouldn't be), then keep in mind that there is still plenty of time before this issue will be resolved.
Any one of us will be more than happy to answer any questions on this subject (and any other thing you want to know).

Scholarships in Chicago GSB:
The new scholarship is awarded by one of the professors at the school – Dennis Carlton (if anyone is interested in more details about him let me know. He's quite a figure).
Since it is the first year that the scholarship is offered, I can't really comment on the selection criteria. However, a full-sponsorship of 3 full-time students by an organization/person they are not employed by is very rare (compare it to other schools and see).
As professor Carlton's intent is to strengthen the Israeli economy, I would guess that someone who comes or intends to return someday to the public sector might have some advantage (I used these vague terms on purpose).

I know you referred the question to Kristen but I will answer it as well:
The flexibility in the curriculum – I don't thin kthat any other school gives so much freedom to students in choosing their courses. The only mandatory course is LEAD. Other than LEAD two students can graduate without taking the same courses at all.
The LEAD program is another huge advantage. Read the explanations on th eweb site or ask us off-line. Generally, the program is meant to further develop managerial and team skills of the students. Apart from that the modules also relate to theperosnal groth and self-understanding of the students.
I already mentioned the great international exposure you get here – either from the diverse student body or with the IMBA and the exchange program.

To elaborate about the option of doing a quarter abroad:
The IMBA program gives the students an option to do a full quarter (3 courses) as exvchange students in one of over 30 business schools around th eworld.
For people interested in working ina global environment and in buisnesses with cross-continent affiliations, tis is a great opportunity to get exposure to other cultures and to the way businesses are managed and conducted in other places.

International students constitute one third (!) of the student body and there people from 44 different countries.
You will feel at home wherever you'll find friends and this has much more to do with personalities tahn with nationalities.
Chicago is great. Anyone who ever visited or lived here will attest to it. We have student living in all parts of the city. There is always something to do, somewhere to go and who to meet.

Just a thought though – think about the message of your selection sends to whoever reads the essay. What does it say about your (your values, aspirations etc.).
There is no "right" answer.

Regarding your second question – Chicago faculty is ranked #1 in the number of publications per faculty member. That is to say that the marketing department (hence, the marketing education you'll get here) are of the cream of the crop among B-Schools.

I think Assaf has made a very good point referring to our "argumentative" nature.
Chicago is cultivating an environment of debate to further develop discussion. You can deffinetly see the level of confidence of Israeli students as an advantage. This also goes to recruiting.

Although Chicago has a reputation of a finance school, it is very strong in the marketing, startegic and general amangement areas.
About a quarter of last year's class is now working in consulting positions.

Is it even possible for the admissions committees to get the GMAT essays? I don't think the ETS keeps the essays on record just for the schools to read (What if I took the test 4 years ago?).
I think that if an applicant gets a low grade in the essays, the person who checks the application can check the essay grade from the TOEFL for reference. Besides, if the applicant got a low grade for the essays his whole "verbal grade" will be low.

מניסיוני, הספר הטוב ביותר הוא הספר של ה ETS, החברה שכותבת את ה GMAT.
יש בו כמות עצומה של תרגילים עם פתרונות מנומקים וכמעט אפס טעויות.
לגבי החלק השני של השאלה – לא ברור לי אם אתה מתכוון לחיבורים שבמבחן ה GMAT (וה TOEFL) או לחיבורים של ה application.
אם התכוונת לחיבורים של הבחינות: המשקל שוועדות הקבלה נותנות לחלק הזה הוא כל כך קטן שחבל להשקיע יותר מדי זמן בהכנה אליו. הסיבה היחידה שבגללה כדאי להתכונן היטב לחלק הזה היא, שבניגוד ל GMAT, במבחן ה TOEFL החיבור הוא כן חלק מהציון. אבל שוב, בגלל המשקל הנמוך של ה TOEFL בהערכת ה application, אולי גם פה יש מקום לשקול מחדש…
אם התכוונת לחיבורים של ה applications: יש חיסרון רציני בלקרוא וללמוד את הספרים הללו. החיסרון הוא שאם תלך לפי איזו שבלונה שמוצגת שם, החיבור שלך ייראה כמו החיבורים של עוד אלפי מועמדים אחרים. אני גם לא מבין מה פירוש "לסמוך" על החיבורים. מה התכוונת לעשות? להשתמש בחיבור קיים ופשוט לשנות את שמות בתי הספר ומקומות העבודה כדי שיתאימו לך?

דברים שאפשר (וכדאי) להתחיל לעשות כשיש לך הרבה זמן:
1. התנדבות בקהילה – בכל application תצטרך להראות פעילות שאינה קשורה ללימודים ולעבודה. מה שמעניין אותם בזה הם שני דברים (ככה לפחות נראה לי): הראשון הוא שאתה אדם עם תחומי עניין נוספים פרט למה שאתה חייב לעשות (תזכור שמי שקורא את ה application ברוב בתי הספר הם סטודנטים, והשאלה שהם שואלים את עצמם היא "האם זה אדם שהייתי שמח אם היה לומד איתי?") הדבר השני הוא תרומה לקהילה בה אתה חי, שוב מההיבט של "כמה המועמד הזה יתרום לכיתה?". תחשוב על משהו שתוכל לכתוב עליו ב application וירשים אותם. עזרה לנזקקים למיניהם, משמר אזרחי, מד"א…. באותו הקשר, לא יזיק אם תאמץ תחביב מעניין (גידול פיראנות, טיפוס הרים, וכד')
2. GMAT ו TOEFL – גמור עם זה מה שיותר מוקדם. שלוש סיבות: האחת – שיהיה לך זמן לשפר את הציון אם תרגיש צורך. השניה – תשתמש בציון כדי להכליל אותו בשלל הנתונים שלך על מנת לעזור לך להחליט באילו בתי ספר אתה מועמד תחרותי. השלישית – לפנות זמן לחלקים המייגעים יותר של ה application.
3. קשרים – תתאפס על בתי הספר שמעניינים אותך ותתחיל ליצור קשר עם סטודנטים, בוגרים, מרצים ואנשי ועדת הקבלה. אף פעם לא מוקדם מדי לעשות את זה וככה גם יש סיכוי שמישהו יזכור את שמך וגם תלמד יותר על התכניות.
4. אם יש לך זמן, מוטיבציה וכסף – תכנן ביקור בבתי הספר. זה תמיד מרשים אותם שאתה בא כל כך מרחוק כדי להכיר את התכנית (מראה שאתה באמת מעוניין בהם ושאתה אדם שעושה שיעורי בית) וזה גם יעזור לך לקבל תחושה יותר אמיתית של אופי המקום. מרחוק, בעיקר בפרוספקטים, הכל יפה ומאורגן היטב וכולם עוזרים ונחמדים.
5. להחליט (ואני אומר את זה בשיא האובייקטיביות, כמובן) ששיקגו זה בית הספר בשבילך.

השאלות המופיעות בטפסים שמיועדים לממליצים, נמצאות שם כי אלו בדיוק הדברים שמעניינים את ועדות הקבלה.
תדאג שהממליצים שלך אכן יענו לשאלות כפי שהן מופיעות שם ואל תתפתה להסתכל על הטופס כ"קווים מנחים" או המלצה.
תחשוב שניה על מה המסקנה שמי שבודק את הבקשה שלך עשוי להגיע אליה:
1. למה הוא מתחכם איתנו? הוא לא הבין שצריך למלא את הטופס?
2. אולי לא נתת לממליץ את הטופס עם השאלות שהופיעו שם, כי ידעת מה הוא יכתוב כתשובה ולא רצית שזה מה שהם יקראו עליך.
3. יכול להיות שאפילו אלו שבחרת כממליצים לא מוכנים להשקיע למענך את הזמן הדרוש (וזה אכן לוקח זמן) לענות כמו שצריך על כל השאלות? אם כן – למה אלו הממליצים שלך? זה הכי טוב שהוא יכל למצוא?
לפי מה שידוע לי, מכתבים "סטנדרטיים" אפשר להביא אם זו המלצה EXTRA ולא אחת מהשתיים או השלוש שהם מחייבים.

עקב מספר די נמוך של נרשמים לכנס לקראת הנסיעה שתוכנן למחר, ה-1 ביולי, הכנס מבוטל.
לאלו שאישרו הגעה נשלחה הודעה במייל. מי שעדיין רוצה מידע בנוגע לנושאים שהיו אמורים להיות מוצגים שם מוזמן לפנות אלי ולקבל אותו.

I think the characters limit is only relevant when sending the recommendation on-line. My letters were regular (printed on paper) and judging by the number of pages, it way-exceeded the limit kassifo mentioned.
One more important thing though: ask whoever is writing the recommendation to give specific examples when writing all the superlatives, so it wouldn't be just empty statements.

אל תטרח.
אם אתה מתכוון לעשות MBA בחו"ל אתה במילא צריך לעשות GMAT. רמת הקושי של ה TOEFL נמוכה (בהרבה) מזו של החלק המילולי ב GMAT. משמע, אם תתכונן טוב ל GMAT אין לך מה לדאוג ל TOEFL.
מה שאתה כן יכול לעשות זה להיכנס לאתרים באינטרנט שנותנים מבחני דמי (חינם) של ה TOEFL כדי לעשות היכרות עם מבנה המבחן.

כמו שמישהו כבר אמר פה – כל הספרים והתוכנות חדשים וכלולים במחיר, ככה שאפשר להתקין אותם על כמה מחשבים שאתה רוצה (בית, עבודה, laptop …). המדריכים ברמה גבוהה וגם קשובים מאד לתלמידים.
אני לא יודע איך זה בסניפים אחרים של קידום אבל בסניף שבעזריאלי יש חדר מחשבים שבו עושים את כל מבחני המתכונת וגם אפשר לבוא מחוץ לשעות הקורס ולתרגל לבד.

רוב המקומות שאני ניגשתי אליהם נותנים ראיון לפי בקשה, ולכן פשוט קבעתי אותם ותכננתי לנסוע. במקום היחיד שבו הראיון הוא לפי הזמנה – קורנל, יצרתי קשר עם מישהי מה admissions והסברתי שאני במילא אהיה בראה"ב באותו זמן ואני מאד רוצה לנצל את הביקור שלי על מנת להתראיין. מפה לשם יצא שבדקו את הבקשה שלי מספיק מוקדם כדי שאני אוכל לדחוס גם את הראיון שלהם לנסיעה.
אני מניח שהשיטה הזו נכונה לכל המקומות שמראיינים רק את מי שהם רוצים. תיצור קשר עם מישהו מספיק בכיר שם, ותסביר כמה שאתה רוצה להתראיין בקמפוס ושנסיעה נוספת מישראל לארה"ב היא יקרה ובלה בלה בלה….

מילגות – לדעתי הכי טוב לשאול סטודנטים ישראלים שלומדים שם עכשיו (או שסיימו), כי אפשר להניח שמישהו כבר עשה את החיפושים האלה פעם. ממה שאני יודע ומהנסיון שלי, בתי הספר מציעים בעצמם קצת מילגות לאלו שמתקבלים, בין K01 $ ועד מילגות מלאות. נראה לי שהם שוקלים אוטומטית כל אחד שמתקבל למילגות הללו.
הלוואות – המשרד של ה dia laicnanif הוא ה"מתווך" העיקרי להלוואות. ממי שדיברתי איתו על זה הבנתי שהם מטפלים כמעט בהכל. מאחר ורובנו אזרחים ישראלים וכנראה לא נמצא מישהו אמריקאי (עם tiderc טוב) שיחתום לנו ערבות להלוואה כזו, כנראה נצטרך לקחת את ההלוואות הסטנדרטיות שמציעים לסטודנטים זרים. למרות שאלו לא הלוואות בריבית גבוהה בכלל.

That’s an amazing track record of scholarships. Congratulations!!!
What do you think they look for when the schools decide on these fellowships?
It varies. Some scholarships are given to lure you to the school. Other scholarships are almost "standard". For example, there is a school that gives 10K to an Israeli admit, and another gives 10K for any admit with high GMAT. Ask current students in the schools you are interested.
Would you prefer a school with a better brand name without a scholarship over one that gives you a full scholarship but has less prestige?
Generally, the former is preferable, but I think it is an issue of what your career goals are, and the relative strengths of the schools. Although a good scholarship takes out some of the risk of doing the MBA and not finding a lucrative enough job, you should look at the long run.

If you didn't, call them up, and ask them to change it manually. Since this has nothing to do with the application itself, there should not be a problem.

They sent an e-mail and a few days later I also got a letter in the regular mail.
I think they consider everyone for those scholarships, providing the applicant filled the necessary page in the application. Did you apply to Duke? If so, it is in the "Merit Scholarship and Financial Aid Information" page.

I got this 10K $ scholarship too.
I also got 18K $ from Duke and a full scholarship from Carnegie-Mellon.

ה- GMAT אכן לא פוטר מ TOEFL אבל אפשר להגיד שההכנה ל GMAT פותרת מההכנה ל TOEFL.
אם תתכונן ברצינות ל GMAT, די בטוח שתוציא ציון גבוה ב TOEFL כי הרמה של החלק המילולי ב GMAT הרבה יותר גבוהה. יש באתר של TOEFL לא רק מבחן לדוגמא אלא גם מין ידיעון שמתאר בדיוק את הרכב הבחינה וגם רשימה (מלאה) של כל נושאי החיבורים. תוריד אותם ותעשה כמה, כי ב TOEFL החיבור הוא כן חלק מהציון.
חוץ מזה יש עוד אתרים שמכינים ל TOEFL ואין ממש צורך לקנות ספרים במיוחד לזה. נסה למשל של KAPLAN.
